Please! For the love of.. Put a compiler in Puppy!

Set up some dotpups with compilers for us to add to puppy.

I have an old compaq 255mhz cyrix and tried no less than 30 distros on it.
Only one other besides puppy would even install (BLAG), but it uses Gnome and that's way too slow on this old thing.

Puppy runs nice, but no sound.
I need to add ALSA (I'm guessing) but I cant because I have no compilers and I dont know how to do it correctly from slackware .tgzs (or even if they would work).

Otherwise, it's back to *gag* windows 98..

Please save me from this awful fate Puppywan!

Hang in there sunshine...give me a day or two and I'll nut it out.....You can't use the standard Slackware alsa tgz's cos of kernel diffs...


Just out of interest what sound chipset does your 'puter use ?

Its an ESS Audiodrive 1869f.
I think ALSA carries the drivers for it (it does for other es18xx anyway).

Update: I found another distro that boots and runs nice on this old box: Dynebolic.

Trouble is, it doesnt really install like Puppy and not even that sound centered distro sees my sound chip.

Im beginning to wonder if ALSA would..,
Ah well, short of going out and buying a sound card (while hoping Puppy recognizes it) or going back to win98, I will just have to wait for some means to add ALSA from you guys.
I passionately hate win98 and Puppy runs like a dream on this old thing (way faster than win98 - especially with Dillo).
It is literally THE distro for this box.
Nothing else will do - so please hook me up soon.

I have had it on my 433mhz Celeron for months.
It's got 512mb pc133 ram, 128mb SiS315 video, 4ch yamaha sound card, and an old ISA ne2000 NIC (the recognition of which, in itself makes you guys friggin HEROES in my book lol - the only other distro that would was Libranet and its far bigger than I want for that box).
I refurb old comps for folks as a pastime and it will be a fantastic tool in my belt.
It bridges the gap between Deli Linux (for super-old boxes) and Libranet (for sorta old) for me - as easy to install distros go anyway (I know Slack, RH, Gentoo, and Debian proper can be done light, but I'm not that knowledgable or fast yet so I'm still partial to prefab )

Hi, search the forum! Look for gcc sla(c)kware etc.
I have described how to install the gcc+required tools to be able to
compile c and c++ apps under puppy...

To remind everyone
Programs can be written as scripts
in tinycc (a part of Puppy or pupget)
Lua
tcl

If you do not have the inclination or aptitude to compile
then consider (for now) posting any link to C code and asking someone to compile

Also even though Gambas is not part of Puppy official acceptable code,
programs can be written and compiled and offered as dotpups . . .
Gambas is a great BASIC pupget
Xbasic installs easily enough (just uncompress)

You could write in XUL or HTML or javascript
we have a dotpup java add-on
so Puppy is java enabled (in potential)

If you want to add to Puppy - consider the wiki
pop into IRC and hang for a while to chat to any stray pups
(whilst you are programming)

Stop barking and pausing and get your paws in . . .
Or are you still waiting for me to develop ASQ?
