From reading about what you say about Ubuntu, wifi connection is a major problem area for most linux distributions.
I would not say that WiFi connection itself is a major problem. I'd say that hardware drivers are a problem, to be precise absence of those drivers for modern hardware components, including WiFi card. Please see post "How to put a system in a pocket?" where I give details of my hardware. New laptop (Toshiba) has problems with WiFi and LAN cards both, at least for Ubuntu.
