Ha Ha, using Seamonkey 1x again is kinda ... quaint, Gnumeric 1.8 def is not, too flawed. If I remember correctly, Gnumeric 1.10 needs something else, goffice and libgf*** I think

Hi all

Cups 1.1 is working great, no hassle installing a printer, I love it.
Right country and keyboard

Will see if I can get xvesa working with a clean boot

Quick first run, live pfix=ram on the old P3 test computer.

Sound and internet connection working on initial boot.Using xvesa, instead of my usual xorg, with no apparent problems.

Does seem a bit strange using the old 1 series SeaMonkey again.

Fresh manual frugal install on the old test box.

On initial boot used xorg to set correct 1024x768x24 resolution but sound and net were not auto-configured.A quick trip through the appropriate wizards configured both correctly. :)

More testing..................

Hi Thanks to James pointing out to run the sound card wizard I know have sound, Barry has updated woof and when you update woof basically all the startup scripts get updated, The startup scripts are the same ones used in 5.1 by reading the change list. This could be a reason for the soundcards not being automatically picked-up.
scripts like
/usr/bin/xwin
/usr/sbin/delayedrun
/usr/sbin/xorgwizard
etc, etc so its bassically a needle in a haystack. find the right script and revert it back or update it.

Welll... what a supprise,

Box 1 (the one that gave me all the video problems with puppy4 and 5)

frugal install, sat access via ethernet,

no problems found so far. :?

The video works perfectly with xorg from the start, even runs 1024x768@85hz with only a little narrowing of the screen width as it's actually running 1024x768/68.68Khz/84.89Hz.

installed without problems
packages installed no problems
sat working (and seems to be with a faster response than 5.1)

just had to put the results up :D :D :D :D

on to box 3 next (office users box)

regards
scsijon

/dev/mixer is missing, When I tried to compile a volume/mixer app I was getting gtk2 gseal errors, So I downgraded gtk2 and the gseal went away, not good. anyways If someone could focus on getting the volume to autostart/detect I could focus on building a new backend, I only have really the weekends to get this in depth and well its Sunday today.
Hmmm maybe gtk3? I haven't tried it but wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

scsijon's Boxes 3 & 4

#30 Post by scsijon »

Box 3

an older ati system, no web access.

no problems found with both vesa and x-org

installs ok, prints ok

Box 4

a dell optiplex gx280, never had linux only a win parn as it does my leadlighting cad. Want to put 432 and add wine131 as the package works under 131 (still have to check the drum printer will).

:( yuck, will have to rework this one and try to work out what's going wrong, no video would work to start with, eventually got vesa to work but only at 800x600@60hz

however found a package missing:

Grub, only get error messages saying it's missing or can't be found. even when no-x and grubconfig is called. One for you I fear ttuuxxx!

Dialup (box 2) will have to be tomorrow afternoon, but not expecting too many problems as 431 works brilliantly out off-the-cd on it as did 214ce and 214x.

Well I compiled the new backend, should extend the shelf-life of 4 series for a couple of years. It will take some time to put it together because I have to work mon-fri and usually pretty tired when I get home so I kind of slowdown during the week, nevertheless I'll plug away at it, If others could find fixes etc it would help to advance this version much quicker. People were asking for months for 4 series to move ahead, well this is your chance.

Hi ttuuxxx

Wlll try my best (even though I have the technical abilities of a wet paper bag)
tried installing the xorg_xvesa-7.3-1.pet (got it from from the pet 4 folder of woof when I was remastering 4 to try and see if I could get xvesa working better) dont think it makes any difference to xvesa

Hope this helps

Hi,

I booted from CD and everything works fine in my old HP L2000 laptop, I have network, sound and Xorg. Non critical errors found, only some minor errors and warnings at xerrs.log:
killall: freememapplet: no process killed
killall: powerapplet: no process killed
kill: usage: kill [-s sigspec | -n signum | -sigspec] [pid | job]... or kill -l [sigspec]
They are loaded when JWM is loading the swallow applications, it's the same info that I get when start these applications from term.

A small error with powerapplet:
powerapplet: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by powerapplet)
Also found some errors about usb-core and usb-hid missing files, right when startx (xwin) is executed. But lsmod and dmesg show they are actually loaded, I must search the cause of this warning. (I wonder if some usb devices could have problems to load...)

Some errors shown with dmesg for lp module:
# lp: Unknown symbol parport_unregister_device
bash: lp:: command not found
# lp: Unknown symbol parport_unregister_driver
bash: lp:: command not found
# lp: Unknown symbol parport_negotiate
bash: lp:: command not found
# p: Unknown symbol parport_claim
bash: p:: command not found
# lp: Unknown symbol parp
Xorg "ati" driver run but seems unstable...

Not found any sound or network problem with 4.3.2. For people with issues please post your /tmp/bootsysinit.log and /tmp/bootkernel.log files.

Greetings,
clarf

I am afraid I will be sticking to 4.3.2 V3 because the idea of not upgrading was so I not have to transfer/update all of my configuration. This was so I would get on/start my GCSES. The only reason for me to use 4.3.* in the future is if it is more compatible with hardware I will be using the most. Other wise if I am going to do all of that work I will put my effort into getting my work into Woof and switching to puppy 5. Sorry for not telling you before. I need to test the compatibility of Lupu with my computers though it should me fine. So you should assume I wont be helping you with this one :| .

I upgraded SeaMonkey in 4.3.2 V3 and have not noticed it being any slower in a few min test I did.

That's ok :) woof 4 series will take a lot less resources than woof 5 series, currently pup-432.sfs <--78MB, I don't think it will be much over 83MB when I'm done updating it, Plus it will have a much newer backend compared to 5 series. Kind of good reasons to stick with 4 series :)
I'll also update the some of devx later on.

My system wont display the data CDs in the CD drives

#39 Post by gcmartin »

Downloaded and MD5 the ISO. Burned to CD under PUP511.

Rebooted the PC and am on desktop.

I cannot display the contents of the CD drives. (this system has 2 SATA DVD readers.)

When I click the sr0 or the sr1 icon at the bottom of the desktop, the Pmount facility launches to the desktop. When I click the Mount button, I get a RED messagebox whose text is "ERROR: unable to mount sr1".

The mount command works fine in a terminal window.

Just a note

SCSI ???

#40 Post by gcmartin »

Booted this version on my DELL server. Its got 2GB RAM and a non-RAID controller with 2 10K SCSI drives, 1 DVD, and 1 CDROM.

The desktop is not showing my drives and mount doesn't show them either?

Ideas anyone...
