Wishing for a TRUE clean slate Puppy 5.1.?

#1 Post by Dragynn »

I guess i'll need to learn to build Puppies myself, what i'm really wishing for is a true simple clean slate, one similar to Turbodog Xtreme, fast and light with no fat in the way of services, but also free of pretty much ALL software packages.

Very few people I know use spreadsheets daily, I see zero reason to have a program for them installed by default. I don't need a stopwatch on my laptop, or an alarm clock. I don't use word processors, a simple notepad will do. I don't need a personal wiki. I don't need file sharing apps and I don't need a torrent ANYTHING (and certainly not multiples). I don't need 10 different media players, VLC will do for most everything. I don't need games loaded by default, if I want some, i'll get some I actually like, i'd rather other people not decide these things for me. I don't need any geek tools whatsoever on my ancient PIII laptop, I don't plan on writing any code or comparing files, if I want to write some code, i'll use notepad (leafpad or whatever, NOT Abiword).

Not complaining here, quite the contrary, Puppy is an amazing resource, and the people here and the forums are invaluable, just wishing for a very clean canvas, one I can add my own preferred apps to easily to make my own flavor of Pup...just the bread please, not everyone likes french toast, lol, and I think that this idea fits into the heart of Puppy as a concept, completely simple, compact, portable, and able to assume any role it's needed in with just a few additions and few menu choices to confuse the new folks.

Thanks and have a great day y'all!

*edit* edited title of thread since I think what i'm looking for is a sort of 5.1 basic, 5.1.1 works great and has a nice configurable GUI that is fast yet has enough comfort, just need to be completely rid of about 40 apps and all their traces and dependencies without breaking the install, my goal/dream is less than 200 mb total ram usage at startup idle.

Or else you could do a remastering and remove all packages you don't want.

Indeed packages take HDD space (well in fact in the xxx.sfs file) but I am not convinced your system will have more performance with the packages removed.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Use peppyy's puppysearch

Well i'm trying, but so far no luck getting a re-master to actually work, or even a USB install of an un-modified Pup for that matter. Sitting in a sea of discs right now and trying to read through all the threads to find out where my mistake is. The Turbodog pup i'm working on actually has a couple of different utilities for re-mastering, neither of which has proved to be fruitful so far.

I believe it will be somewhat faster with less clutter, I know from many many re-wipes/loads of OS'es over the years that a fresh load runs fast, and starts to slow down the more programs you load and of course with everyday use, but that's a secondary issue, and again let me stress that this is just my own subjective preference, but to me, running around with an old slow laptop with a gazillion whizbang programs and utilities on it, is like loading both of my 5 foot tall toolboxes, my home stereo and CD collection, my computer, and my washing machine into my truck, just to drive to the store for a soda.

Still working on it....thanks for the reply!

simplified re-mastering

#5 Post by coopsurv »

try this... keepin' it simple.

first, sfs... aka pup_xxx.sfs are in short, compressed zip/tar... blah.

create dir in root partition with rox...

aka... /mnt/hd...

such as:

/mnt/hda2/sfs_build_cpup

drop a copy of your current:

pup_xxx.sfs into /mnt/hd.../lost+found and rename... so you can mount it, then:

simply copy all of it's contents to your created dir, edit... remove to suit.

DO NOT focus on a perfect Pup... not a OS built that doesn't have a bit of junk.

...simply focus on bulk such as:

gnumeric, abiword... blah.

most of bulk resides in:

/usr/...blah name and
/usr/local
/usr/share for some.

remove such from your working dir... as to the perfect build... if your not sure DO NOT remove it.

...when your done, simply use:

mksquashfs:

/mnt/hd.../sfs_b... /mnt/hd.../lost...

this simply compresses your edited dir... then

use:

isomaster to replace pup_xxx.sfs.

...of course back-up before overwrite and qemu works well here for testing verses rebooting a possible bad pup_xxx.sfs

this method allows you to tinker...aka learning curve, without harming your working system... especially if using qemu.

good luck.

as to your stuff not working... it's likely a grub thing.

GRUB is best bootloader around... but as any it's menu.lst has to be proper... no room for error.

if you want further blah... reply.

good luck.

-or...

try mine at:

puppy2.org/coopsurv

...it has little bloat and

works smoothly on:

p2-300mhz, 128mb

flies on:

p3-500, 256 and above.

Dragynn, have you considered Barry's latest? Wary is a minimal OS that you add programs to.

No it's not. It's a conventional 100+MB Puppy that lets you plug in an older kernel.

I used PANZERKOPF's version of Dougal's Pupremaster script for my last re master to ISO of Lucid Puppy 5.

Its a bit boring no audio but i recorded the full remaster process from start to finish here:

well no one else put a focus on that requirement
I did

I built TXZ_pup based on that thought :!:
everything can be removed pre installed programs down to the very last file and have a zero kb base :D
using the package manager with A GUI

Why not go the GoboLinux way?

Each program resides in a separate directory with all the files it needs to run.

To avoid duplication there can be an alias file telling it where to find anything not in there with it.

Simplicity can be more valuable than saving space in an age of terabyte disks, seems to me.

The script referred to here will make the remaster process a breeze. Give it a try.
TIP During the remaster process, the script creates a secondary /root/ directory in your /temp/ folder, and the option to edit this manually is presented during the process. THIS IS IMPORTANT: on some versions of Puppy, this remaster process borks the package manager. Avoid this as follows: before starting, move the directory /root/.packages/ out of /root/ to /mnt/home. When prompted to hand edit /temp/root/ during the remaster process, copy it back to /temp/root and all will be well. Dont forget to finally MOVE it back to your original Puppy after remastering :)

Hello Dragynn,
Why don't you start up your favorite Puppy navigate to /usr/share/applications and delete ever application desktop file you don't like and refresh the menu. Now you only see the Applications you want, Remaster it and you done. Puppy isn't that big to start with.

Sorry but what you list as not needed doesn't leave you with much! at all.

It reminds me of a pupplet MU made that was only 10- 18mb's big if I remember?

Still not happy! Navigate to http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/vintage/ and download something small here. Barebones may be.

I used the "Woofy" remaster tool to remove loads of stuff very quickly from my ISO.

I simply opened pfilesearch (not pfind), clicked the "search current filesystem only" option and searched for stuff I wanted removed, like "abiword", "gnumeric", "xine", "gxine", etc...

Then I coped the results that were returned into one long text file, so I had a list of full paths for all the files I wanted to remove.

I even added and removed a few things from the list, to make it how I want it.

Then I ran Woofy, and gave it the iso to edit and the list of files to delete, and clicked go..
It made a small ISO, with all the files removed. :D

Lol, 600+ files later i'm wondering if the word "simple" means the same thing to you as it does to me?

So i'm guessing when you say edit ISO file, you don't mean an intact .iso, but rather the .sfs file within? Tried it on an iso, knew it was too quick to have worked, lol, made me a nice copy of 5.1.1 though

Okay, maybe i'll get it right this go-around, thanks for all the hard work scottman!

*edit* hmmm, no, not sfs, shoot what am i doing wrong? I have woofy loaded, I have the .iso and the text list of file paths are in a working directory on my hard-drive in an ext3 partition mounted to a running Lupu 5.1.1. It seems pretty straightforward and it does create an iso with the name I specified, but it's a duplicate in every other way of 5.1.1 Lupu.

So, since for some reason no re-mastering tool, and no Woof, and no Woofy seem to respond for me.... and since I have taken the time to build a removal list as detailed in the Woofy documentation, couldn't I just use Coopsurv's methodology and instead of going through the sfs again, use my list I compiled for Woofy of full paths to the items I want to delete, and do a batch-deletion of those files and then re-master? Is there a way to do batch deletions in Puppy? su rm and then the list of files/paths?

there are many barebones that should be compatible with your p3 ...

4.21: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=43924
4.21 Retro: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=46326
FatFree 3.01: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26445
WhiteFang: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy//viewtopic.php?t=32519

only if you need a 'cutting-edge'-version you will have to do it yourself.

#1. Everyone I know uses spreadsheets. I think we live in different worlds! :)
#2. Puppy is tiny. There is no way this OS can be considered bloated in today's world. (strictly my opinion, but then, I like to think I'm always right :) )
#3. Go back to Big Bass' post. Read his stuff. Look at his OS. It's very reduce-able. He's a miracle worker. You're going to like what he's done.

I think I understand Dragynn's need. However, I also think what we call a barebones may still be too bloated for him!

We are all different and have different needs. I just wish the Dragynn's of the world would also recognise those of us different from him, (using spreadsheets!), in the same way - i.e. tolerated!

It would be nice to have a basic barebones available with each released official puppy - but I don't see it happening.

If Big Bass's Puppy offering is not suitable then maybe Dragynn should look at Tiny Core Linux whose objectives seem better related to his needs than Puppy's seem to be.

Browser Linux?

#19 Post by P123 »

The one thing about this thread that surprises me is the no one has suggested Browser Linux.

Not the latest versions using beta versions of Firefox, as it is difficult to get all my favourite extensions to work as it is a beta version.

Just add the pet files as the school pup team in Hungary (English version is available) did.

As for Tiny Core it is great if you want to build your system from the ground up as sneekylinux as shown in his videos.

What about Puppy Greyhound http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33652 ?

Now i'm intolerant because i wish for an OS without a spreadsheet program?

wow.

I wish I had never bothered asking anything in this forum now.

"tolerated"??????

again, wow.

Look, I am offered a choice of browsers in 5.1.1, why couldn't the rest of the programs be the same way? That's all that i'm asking.

I like Puppy's interface/GUI and the way it works, forgive me wishing for that same useability in a version for those of us who prefer to make our own choices.

I don't need two font viewers for crying out loud, one will suffice, and in all truth I don't really need that one, I never change fonts unless i'm working in Photoshop and it has it's own font viewer.

Similarly, I don't need 3-4 file search utilities or 3 different text/word processors, 3 or more file download utilities, 2 torrent programs, 4 calculators, half a dozen media players and the friggin Out house sink.

Look, I already said i'll do it myself, please quit beating a dead horse, I get it, some of the devs here like to shove as much crap as they possibly can into a distro just because 1. they can and they are proud of that fact, and 2. they personally use all that stuff and don't care about people who don't want it.

So I am already as far as having a version that will actually work in 256 again, my goal is to have it down to under 200 mb's total Ram taken up at idle when it's first loaded.

And i'm a tenacious b*****d let me tell you, so stop telling me I need to choose one of your prefab versions or go elsewhere, none of you have any idea who I am or what I need, and i'll do as I please, up to and including stripping the useless bloat out of what is otherwise an excellent system.

Some of you REALLY need to get out more and see what the world is actually like before you start making subjective all-inclusive judgements about what's right for other people.
