Which Puppy Do I Need?
I have an old computer I'm trying to salvage, but I don't know what to use.
It only has 128MB and 100MHz on it. I'd like to use Puppy/Linux as a live CD, but I don't know where or how to.

For an old PC, Puppy 214X could be a choice.
There are 2 versions.

You should create a swap- partition also on the hard-disk , with GParted.

http://www.puppylinux.org/main/index.ph ... lish04.txtEnter the size of the third partition in the "New Size" field. This partition is to hold Linux's swap files as a Linux swap partition. You should make it as large as your computer's memory (RAM). With my test computer, this amounts to 128 megabytes (MB). Select linux-swap from the "Filesystem" box and click "Add".

Is that 100mhz the ram speed or the speed of the cpu?puppypuppy32 wrote:I have an old computer I'm trying to salvage, but I don't know what to use.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs
Another regular on this forum (looseSCREWorTWO) uses a simple rule of thumb for swap:
RAM + swap = 512MB
So in your case, that would be a 384MB of swap.

Good catch! The RAM (or bus) speed is typically lower than the processor (cpu) speed. Is that 100mhz the ram speed or the speed of the cpu?
The cpu speed is what's relevant here.

Almost any puppy will run on a 1GHz processor. The RAM is the big issue, IMO. I've had pretty much every official version up to 4.2.1 running on slower processors with 128MB of RAM, but the best response has been with the 2 and 3 series pups at that level.
If it were me, I'd upgrade the RAM to at least 256MB and run either 214X (I'm biased, but its great) or 4.3.1. If you can't get or upgrade the RAM, I'd definitely go with something a little lighter. There are a lot of choices out there for that... it would depend on what you want to use the machine for.
What will you be doing with it?
