Lucid Puppy 5.1- A Full-Featured Compact Distro

We have one - JRB's sfs loader - works really well.
Load / unload sfs's on the fly - no need to reboot etc.
Seems to have no limit to number of sfs's that can be loaded simultaneously.
IMO it should be part of every puppy.
It's built into 4.4 and is so useful.
Just my 2cent's worth.

I agree that JRB's SFS Loader is brilliant and should be a standard feature if possible.
Can you confirm it works with Lupu 5.1? JRB has not been on this forum for quite a while (not logging in anyway).

Very interesting. You have ATI graphics.
Barry is having problems with ATI in Quirky and Wary.
Sage is having problems with something. He has gone into rant mode both here and on Barry's blog so it is difficult to know precisely what graphics he is using and whether that is the problem. Saying Lupu doesn't work on many of his machines is not helpful in trying to isolate the problem. As Sage uses a lot of old hardware it may be that the advances in the Linux Kernel and Xorg have just gone too far for his hardware as I thought was the case with Intel 855 until the solution was found! If you are reading Sage it would be nice to know what graphics cards/chips are used on the machines you have problems with.
We also need someone with ATI to stick around and test any possible solutions with Lupu while they use 4.3.1 as their working puppy.

Your thoughts regarding the comment on non-US users suggest a nerve was struck! The quote should, of course, have said non-US KEYBOARD users and was nothing to do with national prejudice. Now it was Shinobar who raised this point and has created the quick setting Lupu. As I respect Shinobar it seems there may be a very valid problem here which should not be dismissed, especially if solving it is just a matter of introducing Shinobar's code.
The problem I have is that I thought Shinobar was very happy with the direct to desktop approach of Lupu and I do not precisely understand the difficulty that Shinobar has that requires his code to solve. Perhaps understanding that will provide the encouragement to make Lupu better.

jemimah,
where do you find time to read, let alone contribute to, all these forums? I appreciate your taking time to point out the solution to my lone little problem, I'll try Fluppy out.
Incidentally, I saw Lobster's Lucid video, didn't anyone tell you that women are not allowed to be both beautiful and intelligent, let alone hard-working?

jemimah,
Well, us too, when we start developing again. Also Ramboot, but not to save power as you do but to use large memory efficiently. With 4GB (actually 3.25 in 32-bit) I can double the largest pupsave file (1.25GB) and still have more than enough ram to run Puppy comfortably.
Also the Lubuntu guys saw it on Distrowatch and are now lusting after my custom LxLauncher.

thefixer, Can you see enough to click the button to run Classic Configuration Experience? It is the bottom button on the intro screen. CCE is the original xorgwizard and should give similar results to 4.3.1, except that 5.1 is using Ubuntu video drivers.First boot, desktop loads, but everything is a VERY dark grey, black and whitish, no colors, just a dark dark grey that is hard to see anything,
Network Restore!
I wish there was a way to restore the network settings to default
I was connecting via wlan to a connection and while it was still connecting via Simple Network Manager,I changed my IceWm themes 3 times and the next I got was an network connection error.
I rebooted and still have the error

I tested one of the earlier releases with an old Radeon 7000 AGP card......worked fine by installing Xorg_High. Post is here.....ICPUG wrote: We also need someone with ATI to stick around and test any possible solutions with Lupu while they use 4.3.1 as their working puppy.

Will try to pull it off the shelf and give 510 a spin on it later today.
Hi all
Still playing with my old box
Can set vlc as default media and audio player, (via usr/local/bin)
Can it be set as default video player for mplayer to handle streamed video via a browser?, or be set as default video player for a browser (I am trying to improve video playback quality in streamed media)
Sorry if this is slightly off topic

As I understand it there is a VLC browser plugin. Currently the browser plugins are from gecko-mediaplayer (which uses mplayer). Those are in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. I don't *think* they are anywhere else also. Replacing them with the VLC plugin should work, or perhaps the VLC plugin is already there and just removing the gecko plugins would work. Can it be set as default video player for mplayer to handle streamed video via a browser?, or be set as default video player for a browser (I am trying to improve video playback quality in streamed media)
Yes, this or something very like it, built in for ease of use and tested and configured for Lucid Puppy.
Finally got a chance to give this a go and it works beautifully with my Audio Advantage Micro. Thanks Playdayz and especially l0wt3ch for providing the pet. This is great too because my headphone jack is really fiddly and is about ready to give up the ghost.tubeguy wrote:Awesome! Thanks for the heads up, will give it a try.playdayz wrote:Hey tubeguy and stripe, Using Audacious--pet on page 128--I was able to 1) play music with my m-audio card on my big machine, and 2) play music with my extigy on my p3 thinkpad. Neither were the first cards--and nothing else would even acknowledge the extigy or play through the m-audio. What I did is discussed in the post with audacious. I bet it might play your turtle beach usb card tubeguy. With Audacious I do not need to block any cards--I can choose between them.

I don't know if anyone has seen this site http://portablelinuxapps.org/ It has a bunch of portable popular application for linux, i went ahead and gave a bunch a try with Lucid 5.1
Other than firefox which i am using now i haven't really tested them beyond just seeing if the open or not, maybe if anyone is familiar with any of the application they could test if they fully work with Luid 5.1?
Set files to executable right click> properties.
Applications that worked:
Firefox 4.0b4 pre
DeaDBeef 0.4.1
Avidemux 2.5.2
Boxee 0.2.21.12568
FBreader o.10.5
Inkskape 0.47
Skype 2.1.0.81
VLC 1.1.1
Opera 10.70
TeamViewer 5
Inkscape 0.47
Scribus 1.3.3.13
Applications that didn't work:
XBMC
Transmission Google chrome

Are there any plans to replace JWM with shinobar's RTL-and-i18n-aware JWM?
