Alternate download site for Win XP Skins for IceWM?

#1 Post by JPRGO »

Hello,

I'm quite a linux newbie, ive been using puppy for 2 moths now,
and I use the Ice WM Window Manager, on the pupget package manager
there are several windows XP themes, I'm searching for the SilverXP theme, but in the package manager it displays a error, I believe this is caused by the fact that there was a change in the download site , from goosee.com to puppyos.com.

Could you provide me with an alternate download link or another location where the file is hosted?

Download silverxp theme for icewm from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=83774

I think a dotpup for silverxp theme is available in the dotpups section on the wiki.

the theme is in the icewm-dotpup.
If you don't want to install it completely, just extract the theme:
unzip icewm24.pup
This should extract a .tgz -archive, that you can open in Pupzip.

I've got the theme, but the files in the wiki are still directed to the old downloads site. I just wanted to tell you that.

Thank, JPRGO

JPRGO,

If you want the almost Xp experience you can use the experience engine and experience gtk theme.

Disadvantage: experiene engine is based on he pixmap engine and therefore considerably slower than other gtk widget engines, however if you have a fast computer with lots of memory it should not be much of a problem.

Let me know if you want to use it I will upload a dotpup for this theme.

It looks nice, I'd like to try it, but is it hard to install? And would it damage things like jwm or gtk?

This dotpup will install the experience engine and eXperience gtk theme. It will not mess with anything. If it does not work for you delete the file /root/.gtkrc-2.0 and uninstall it using pupget.

Restart X after installing the dotpup

Okay, this worked, it looks really nice, thanks, but I have one more question, in icewm my font is really tiny, it's hard to read anything, how do you make it bigger? note: I have already tryed to "set global font size", but that doesn't work, the font remains the same size.

to edit the icewm fonts you need to go to
/root/.icewm/themes/what-ever-theme-you-are-using/

eg
/root/.icewm/themes/SilverXP/default.theme

open default.theme in text editor and go to line no 126 for sliverxp theme

TitleFontNameXft="Helvetica:size=9:medium" you will get similar lines upto line no 168. edit size=9 to a size that suites you. Helvetica stands for the font. You can change that to Bitstream Vera Sans if you have installed them.

The experience engine is not a window manager nor is it an icewm theme. It is a widget theme for gtk2. Just restart X to see if it works or not. If it works you will have an interface similar to the one on top. If it dose not work you would have the default gtk theme.

Hi Bombayrocker

Firstly thanks for this thread, it has helped me get puppy looking the way I want it. I have installed the experience dotpup and it has enhanced the appearance of Abiword Xarchive etc but Rox filer still looks the same and does not look like the image you posted above is there anything I can do about this please.

I am using Puppy 1.07 with the default version of Rox. I have also noticed that QT apps are not changed by the GTK themes how can I get them changed

EDIT

OK I have installed Rox 2.4.1 I think from the dotpups this has resolved the Theme issue with Rox.

I would still like to know how to the the QT apps to look like GTK apps I will create a new thread for this though
Thanks for your help

SamSung, QT-apps:
it depends, if they were compiled statically or with shared libraries.
The static versions often run more reliable, as they have their own QT in the binary.
This reduces version-conflicts.
These files are usually very big >10 MB.

These files are not themable.

If you have an application compiled with shared libraries, it uses the theme activated in KDE, if you have that.
I have no idea, if you can use a different theme without having KDE installed.

There are some themes, that look very similar in Gtk and KDE, there even is a special KDE-theme-engine, that can detect the current Gtk-theme, and use a similar one in KDE automatically.

Thanks Mark for the info.

The problem that I have is that two apps Scribus and VYM look really horrible in non KDE puppy, I have used them in Suse with KDE and no problem Pease see the image below

Image

Whilst I understand that I may not be able to get the two apps looking Xarchive in the picture. Is it possible and if so how to get them to display the interface more pleasingly particularly the fonts in the menus.

I have applied the font enhancements ie use window fonts found elsewhere on the forum and installed the GTK theme:engine eXperience, but this has not had any effect on QT apps, which it is not suppossed to.

In short are there some measures that I can take to make the two QT apps in the image, ie Scribus and VYM display more elegantly.

Your help as always is appreciated

you will need Megapup001 / 002 or KDE standalone:
http://dotpups.de/files/KDE-3.5.1-usr_more/

http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/Megapuppy-01/
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=6771

Then you can use themes:

But it seems the font is fixed, you just can change it's size in the options.

how to the the QT apps to look like GTK apps
you can edit the qt config file ... qtrc in /root/.qt/

for example, you can turn on antialiasing, and set the default font to be Verdana, something like this:

[General]
useXft=true
enableXft=true
font=Verdana,16

assuming that the Verdana font is available

you can Google for qtrc, useXft, enableXft
for example, see here and here

Thanks for the replies fellas,

MU
Is there a lighter smaller way of using your solution, some libraries etc as I have limited space on the PC's I am trying to get this working on.

Guestoo
I have looked for the qtrc file in /root/.qt but it does not exist on my copy, I have only these files in that dir vymrc, vymrc.lock, and qt_plugins_3.3rc.

I have done a search of the HDD and have not found the file qtrc.

OK OK I have created a qtrc file in the .qt directory and put this text in it

[General]
useXft=true
enableXft=true
font=Verdana,16

This has had the desired affect on the fonts and at least the apps are now usable.

Should anything else be in the qtrc file for instance the line

[General]
GUIEffects=nonee

Looks interesting, I am looking for something to make the dark grey of the qt apps look more like a light grey or a silver to blend more with the GTK theme.

I am running 1.07 HDD install

Thanks for the help

here is my /root/.qt/qtrc

It has some entries related to my KDE-installation, but maybe the palette -entries will work without KDE:
