I tried 507. Its frugal installation worked fine with a pupsave file. I tried to use the option of save to partition (partition is ext2). On reboot, it failed to boot. It could not find things. I know frugal with save to entire ext2 partition should work. I do not have an idea of why it failed.

video driver

#1262 Post by don570 »

When I tested lupu 506 it only advised me
nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2) ,
we think the best add on driver is Xorg_High.pet .
It should advise that catdude's pet NVIDIA-96.43.16_lupu500-k2.6.33.2.pet
is best driver for this card.

Direct desktop with remastered puppy(lupu)

#1264 Post by shinobar »

Playdayz, you work so hard! Have you enough time to sleep?
playdayz wrote: I made a remaster and the CD booted fine but instead of booting to the desktop it stopped at xorgwizard--not the keyboard layout but the actual xorgwizard--so it was probably xwin that sent it there for some reason.
It occurs in 2 cases.
  1. Remaster lupu with customize (/etc...) option and move the remastered CD to another PC.
  2. Remaster lupu without customize option and boot anywhere same PC or another PC.
The first case is reasonable because the xorg.conf keeps the hardware profile on the comment line and xwin checks this.
The second case occurs because xorg.conf is missing so xwin executes xorwizard, which is not of the first stage anymore but the woof one.
Only one case the remastered CD boot up directly to the desktop is:
Remaster lupu with customize option and boot up the same PC.

Similar situation occurs on USB installed lupu. Once you create lupusave on the USB, the direct desktop is not PC-free anymore. See my previous post.
These situation can be said 'specified behaviour'.

Well then, if we take my previous proposal on the direct desktop, what happens?
  1. Remaster lupu with customise option... direct desktop on anywhere.
  2. Remaster lupu without customise opton... no direct desktop on anywhere.
  3. USB installed lupu with lupusave... still direct desktop anywhere
it seems cuorious in the second case you does not get direct desktop even on the same PC.
but i think it is better then the current situation. This is the only way you can make your custom CD goes directly desktop anywhere.

One pit: Once you go through xorgwizard or 'Complete Configuration Experience', the direct desktop of the remasterd CD is not PC-free anymore.

frugal install and grub

It is normal.
grubconfig basically does not support FRUGAL installation.
See my previous post.

You can try Frugalinstaller with grub4dosconfig. It must be a cool experience.

Does anyone have a usb sound card. I have a Soundblaster Extigy which I think should be recognized as a usb sound card, but it is not.

I have never seen it work myself. Have you? What you describe is what I have always seen. We should just remove it--that was what Barry was doing in Woof July 20 I think but something went wrong it seems.

I was just reading the messages on the rc.shutdown from Woof July 20 and it says it only works if you install the Puppy files at / *not* in a folder. As I recall I probably always had them in a directory.

stripe, here is what I do

Puppy Universal Installer

Frugal install

at end keep the text that shows what to include in menu.lst

Start Grub Bootloader Config

Simple
Standard
/dev/sda1 (or wherever you want them)
MBR

then, open sda1 (wherever you put grub files)
/boot/grub/menu.lst
insert the text for frugal install with grub and save
reboot

using 507 Beta 2 and any time I open console receive following entries which I have never seen before

id: cannot find name for group ID 0
id: cannot find name for group ID 0
#

this is first time I have seen these entries and have been using all of the LUCI iso's plus the 500 series

any idea what is causing this?

edited one time

My Problem SOLVED
Deleted first full installation of lupu-507 Beta 2 and
did another full install. Problem no longer exists

The Inspiron 4000 has needed acpi=force on previous Lupu.
Wasn't quite enough this time.

Then I removed the usb cardbus that I was using for mouse and
wireless dongle and replaced with ps2 mouse and pcmcia wifi
card.

Bootup and reboot-poweroff working now.
I need to find the usb caused hang ups.

Using a usb 2.0 hub instead of my old "Macally" usb cardbus
adapter solved the problem with usb.

Working great....and it no longer needs acpi=force on the
kernel line!

Hi all

found a conflict between Pwidgets-2.2.7.pet and Conky-1.8.0-lucid

Downloaded and installed Pwidgets as normal and set them on desktop

Downloaded and installed Conky opened it and closed it

switched desktops and all Pwidgets apart from the analoge clock appeared in seperate Xwindows titled "Conky (puppy pc)"

Had to unistall both Pwidgets and Conky then reinstall Pwidgets to get them working again

Hope this helps
Don

Edited to say: just checked in 506 and it happens there as well

Yeah Stripe, Pwidgets has a cutdown conky included, it is mentioned on the Pwidgets page. You can still use it as plain conky with a config, it's just not the latest.

It should advise that catdude's pet NVIDIA-96.43.16_lupu500-k2.6.33.2.pet
is best driver for this card.
That should be fixed for 507, thanks.

I'm working on a new Java pet, it is working for me in Firefox without any other addons (iced- tea etc). It is the latest Java, 1.6.0-21.. will upload soon

NB: it is not like coolpup's version which installs to /mnt/home. This one installs to /usr/lib so you will need at least 150MB free in your pupsave or partition.

Cheers

Lupu-507 live pfix=ram on the quad w/ Nvidia onboard graphics.

Initial boot had the correct resolution (no acceleration) and working sound and internet. Installed the Nvidia 256.35 pet and with a bit of tweaking in the Nvidia X Settings it's all good.

I'm still attempting to get Opera 10.60 to work correctly in Lucid Puppy. Instead of trying my Opera pet in either a fresh install or running pfix=ram like usual, I installed it in my frugal install of 507 where I already had Firefox.
Opera 10.60 is working fine........must be using a Firefox plugin......just need to figure out which one.

To confirm I tried the Opera pet again pfix=ram and and the original problems were still there.More confused than ever............... :)
