Should be what to do at a glance.
Graphical icons help in any case the users are good at english or not.
Messages should be short and simple.
Current setting should be displayed.
Timezone setting is essencial at this point of time. Imagine when you use email.
Well said. There would be practical problems trying to implement such a gui for 5.1, mainly that we are in feature freeze and are simply refining what we have without adding anything new. There would also be a considerable amount of code behind the gui. Much of the code is already written and could be recontextualized. It would have to account for the fact that the resolution, for instance, can be changed without creating a full xorg.conf as can the Language and Locale.

There are utilities that already exist in the desktop menu to change timezone. In the most common case, timezone doesn't much matter because the computer hardware clock is set to local time anyway--therefore the time that is displayed is the time on the hardware clock regardless of timezone. I never bother with it myself and leave it set at Perth to honor Barry.

What we were after is the very simplest first run dialog possible. On the first screen people can click Ok or click to make changes. On the second screen are the changes; no one will have to click more than two out of three.

Your interface is very similar to our earlier ideas for 5.2. We will certainly review the first run dialog for that release and would have time to make changes and test them thoroughly. My interest is in making the gui friendly and non-threatening. Too many settings to adjust all at once scares me. Ultimately I think it would be great to do away with the first run dialog altogether and have a Puppy with enough intelligence to figure most of them out itself.

icewm patches

#1042 Post by 01micko »

Ok...

A couple of patches for Icewm

menu icons

The icons are missing in the menu because of a woof buglet.

Technical details: In the "3builddistro" stage of woof certain templates are already in place and they override the installation of the new menu template.
No, that is wrong, I assumed it would be a template but no, it's a pet. If you want to build a lupu-503 from woof, PM me for the correct pet

Layman details: None. Just install the ice_menu_patch-1.pet and get on with what you want to do!

tray buttons (Partview and Browser Default)

These are missing in Icewm. My fault. This patch, icewm_su_tray_patch-1.pet fixes that and also suppresses the startup errors in /tmp/xerrs.log. Install the patch and restart X.

Cheers

Grub is broke.

Tried doing full installs with universal installer to empty hard drive.
Neither the Grub in the installer or the Grub bootloader config
would install the files to partition or put Grub on MBR.

I hadn't tried this with Luci 213, so don't know how long this
has been a problem.

It only does up to 800x600 resolution on a p3, ATI laptop that
needs 1024x768 native resolution.

EDIT:

Tried the full install on Dimension 3000 pc. Grub worked!
I think the spare laptop hard drive may have problems.

EDIT:

Tried other installs on that drive; no problems.

Back again..................

Running Lupu-503 live pfix=ram in one of the dreaded Nvidia boxes.Booted in correct display, sound and internet. First run did not give a driver recommendation, but luckily I knew the right driver. :)

Installed Opera and the 96.43.16 Nvidia pet from the PPM.

lupu503 problems

#1046 Post by scsijon »

sorry folks, four pages of problems this time, but running low on peak time so summary only now, rest tomorrow morning (aest), same box as listed earlier, specs there.

did a FRUGAL install ok.

summary:
Video set to max again by default, setting to 1024x786 kills video (black screen of death) and nothing works (CAF1/F5 dead), setting to 600x480 gives white screen of death (new one), rest are ok now but fonts are "thin" walled.
No xvesa works, intel driver only
install of xorg_high may not be needed as 503 is also working in 1800x1440 quite well and glxgears over 5000.

still can't use quickpet via sat, timeout messages each time, even tried changing servers, no differances.

can use ppm ok, no problems

noticed in ppm xorg_high under system, nevidia stuff under setup

will test further tonight and full report upload early tomorrow my time.

reagrds
scsijon
ps, there are some +700,000 of these boxes out there somewhere as they were ther standard aussie gov't contract box at the time. It does need to work even if 10% are still alive.

playdayz, is there any chance that you include both libfribidi and a BiDi-enabled JWM? I can assure you many Arabic and Hebrew speakers will enjoy this. IceWM doesn't matter ... at least one window manager that works well is enough, that can wait for the next Luci

My aim is to get working RTL languages in Puppy. And I don't do all that because I speak Hebrew, I do this because so many people around the globe, mainly all Arabic-speaking nations, need that to be able to use Puppy.

I heard once about some Ubuntu Islam edition or something like that ... if there is a Christian Puppy, a Puppy that supports Arabic can be easily turned into an Islamic Puppy and bring Puppy to the Arabic world. That's great in my opinion.

Hi Iguleder

This is Barry's patch for JWM

http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01376

This is shinobar's compile of JWM-492 in 501, that will be fine same kernel, mostly the same libs.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 675#386675

I can't tell if it works or not but I do know that shinobar's tarball calls Jwm with "jwm-i18nl"... of course you just make a symlink to it to call jwm normally

HTH

But that's an i18n patch ... and for some reason JWM didn't compile on my Lupu (501) with libfribidi and libfribidi-dev installed ...

I'll try again on Luci, but I'll do my other experiements first

EDIT: found something weird, remains of 2createpackages, /automake.

EDIT 2: 503 doesn't display Hebrew, Asian or Arabic characters. Why don't you download DejaVu Sans from the official website and use them instead of the Ubuntu/Woof fonts? They don't have all glyphs and that's one of the worst things for a user that doesn't know English well. I did that in my puplet and now it works better than any Puppy with those languages.

Okie dokie

Another Icewm bug.. it's coz of woof//.. I swear!

technical stuff: This one fails to switch the wm in /etc/windowmanager when switching to JWM from icewm through the shutdown menu. I changed the routine from backing up and restoring (original backup was in pinstall.sh) to the reverse of what wmswitcher does, that is use the rpl utility to replace a line in /usr/bin/restartwm. The patch modifies /root/Startup/zfixwm. Now, that'll beat woof.

layman's advice: install wmswitcher_patch-3.pet and get on with stuff.

So see attached

Cheers

Test Lupu 503 and Nvidia driver

- Luvcview doesn't start, sends an error to the console and that's it. Need some gxmessage.

- I could not add a keyboard layout because xorgwizard didn't put Xkb stuff in xorg.conf. When I got my nvidia driver installed (which worked wonderfully, except the nvidia-xconfig thing) it modified the file and added that section.

- There's a bug with SFSs. It shows lupu-503.sfs.

- Both Network and Internet show Sylpheed.

- Crappy fonts in Firefox. I think it's the Ubuntu fonts again ... and besides, as I said, no Asian and RTL languages. Just replace 'em with DejaVu Sans (and Liberation/Libertine) from the official site(s) ... those fonts are enough for everything and even do a great job as Microsoft font replacements. Fedora uses them and everything looks great.

- GtkHash needs a description ("GtkHash generate hashes"?), same goes for GNOME-MPlayer ("GNOME-MPlayer media player"?). Oh, Gnumeric and Abiword too.

- Top needs to be removed from the menu. Htop is there already ... imho both should be removed.

- Pfind and Searchmonkey ... one should be dropped imho, I'd go for Pfind, it's smaller and friendlier. Regular experessions ... meh.

- Tiny suggestion: in Quickpet, put some notice regarding nvidia drivers, especially the 256 one: they need LOTS of free space. I got one kernel panic because it filled my save. When I fixed that issue some files were corrupt and X didn't start.

Tried an upgrade :)
It upgraded my Ubuntu Studio save file (based on Lucid 5)
Not what I was expecting but the sort of thing that will happen
Screen icons all over the place

. . . then fresh pfix=ram boot :)
if clicking on browser (first time)
it needs to close down quickpet
(message came up saying quickpet was loaded
and would not install until quickpet closed)

Changed to icewm OK
Can we look forward to some of the backgrounds
we developed in 4.2 for 504?

Can someone package or offer traditional puppy desktop
icons - my favourite for colour, shape and differentiation . . .

New Lucid news - excellent idea
the update button was never really used
and if needed can be implemented and added to the news
I would suggest some links
eg.
Forum link
Wiki
News
Barrys Blog

. . . And some 'ads' for Puppy innovation
Quirky, Woof, Fatdog, Fluppy, Puppee, 2.xx, Slaxer

Even though I would prefer talking cows or lobsters
just to say again, the new messaging system that tells you when a file is installed or gives other messages is very simple, efficient and user friendly
Good job!

wiki upgraded for 503

Hi All
Did several clean frugal installs from cd and usb and hit the following problems

1 No lupu recomendation for nvidia geforce 210 (GT218)(revision A2)
2 if try to install driver 256-36 that I used with 213 volume adjust and internet conection icons disapear from taskbar in JWM
3. used preinstalled nv driver and seems OK
4. Attym is now working great with MSN in icewm but in jwm the taskbar icon is in a X-window in top left of screen,
5. Osmo is good in icewm but in jwm again the taskbar icon is in a X-window in top left of screen,
6, Sylpheed is not running from the desktop icon or the start menu in jwm or icewm (have looked and the path to defaultemail seems OK)

Dont know if this is just my machine or not as I have only tested on one machine
amd 3200+ 64bit chip, 512mb ram,
NVIDIA geforce210 (GT218)(revision A2) graphics card
resolution 1280 x 1024 (worked great with 213)

pets downloading and installing without any missing dependencies
boot up wizard working fine
Like the puppy news page, good idea
Hope this helps
Stripe

Edited to say: Downloaded and installed: libgpgme11_1.2.0-1.2ubuntu1_i386.deb
and Sylpheed is working fine, thanks 01Micko

Just instaled 01micko's 2 patches: wmswitcher_patch-3.pet & icewm_su_tray_patch-1.pet And no more problems with Ayttm and Osmo in JWM They are working great
Thanks again 01Micko

This has also taken care of the problem with the 256.36 driver (if it ever was the driver) as it installs and works perfectly
so everything is now working great, apart from no lupu recomendation for driver, (not a big problem)
I am one happy puppy
Thanks again 01Micko

18th time:
*started pc with modem off*
*started pc with monitor off at monitor until pc started floppy test*
start ok, screen started at 1280x1024
> just shutdown for a review and think

evening tea and random thoughts:
?when and how does the video card get the monitor information with a crt
monitor against a lcd monitor? and how is it now being interpreted?

?I noticed with 503 the usb wireless mouse would at random times stop until
you picked it up and put it down again?

?something is up with quickpet? what is it likely to be? and needs a spinning
disc or something when working*

?check the firewall build is actually in the install script and doesn't rely
on the modem actually being alive? as sat is not usually left on unless
needed by most people as being on costs!

?something screwey with video as 212 "basically" worked ok!

?noticed after installing from ppm that the package is still in the "available
list at the top of ppm screen as well as in installed, ?didn't it dissapear
from top list after installing in quirky and 431?

?connect scripts and pick shutdown routines etc need sorting if install sets
up the internet*

enough for now I think

Ok

Tasgarth

The email client, Sylpheed is missing a lib.. here is the Ubuntu link.. I don't know why it is so huge? But in woof the docs will be cut down..

http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/i386/l ... 1/download

Iguleder.. I might repackage Sylpheed, put in Internet menu only

I agree about luvcview, I'll repackage with a wrapper script

Warning in QP, check.. also will make "delete pets" default .. but an option to keep. A checkbox in preferences, I meant to do that awhile ago.

Other stuff, I dunno, I like top and htop, serve 2 different purposes to me, maybe remove menu entry to top? Of course it's still there.

Top is really useless for the average user, so kick it out. That .desktop file comes with Woof. Same goes for alsamixer, I'm glad the menu entry is out.

Htop ... is very useful, but only for power users. I think it should be removed from Lupu, because most people won't need it. Putting it in the repo is more than enough.

Another suggestion: in the window manager switcher menu entry - remove the "WM Switcher". "WM" is too technical ... I think you should change it and add some explanation without the term "window manager". Let's say ... "A different desktop that is more similar to Windows XP" and "a simpler and lighter desktop, which is the default" for IceWM and JWM, respectively. That should make it much easier for users. Also, that will explain what a window manager is, without using that term.

EDIT: attached a modified DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS with some duplicate-functionality apps removed, Sylpheed fix and some tray applications replaced with the Quirky versions instead of the 4.3.1 versions. It's a text file I renamed to .tar so the forum lets me upload it, just remove the extension.

EDIT 2: another addition to Lupu, a tray icon for Pmusic 1.0.2. This pet cannot be uninstalled because it replaces one Pmusic file.

These changes you mention won't happen. It's too late in the game.

Sure, bugs will be fixed. That's paramount. If it's not newby friendly then there is documentation and web searches. Menu's are just a very brief description.

There will be more detailed release notes.. and the Puppy help will be upgraded. And there is the new feature of "Lucid Puppy News".

We'll get there in the end.. this is just the beginning

Cheers

Now I found some serious "bug". Look at /usr/share/fonts:

Code: Select all

/usr/share/fonts/TTF
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.cache-2
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.scale
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/DejaVuSans.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/fonts.cache-2
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/fonts.scale
The directories have different sizes, I guess the Woof fonts (/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF) got mixed with the Ubuntu fonts (/usr/share/fonts/TTF). Double size.

EDIT: I deleted /usr/share/fonts/TTF and installed the attached pet (made it now), Hebrew displays nicely in Firefox.
