I've been trying to install Linux on a old laptop that I've had for a number of years collecting dust.
A Toshiba Satellite 300cs - Pentium 200 MHz, 40 MB Ram.
It currently has win98 on it. I'd like to dual boot and have tried the method of installing PupWin98 to boot Puppy 4.3 but it dies after expanding the image while performing a modprobe.
I don't have USB but I do have a CD reader that is not available as a boot device.
Any suggestions on the best boot method I should use and the particular version of Puppy? I've read I should use a retro build like 4.1.2 retro
What version for a really old Toshiba Satellite 300cs?

The same advice goes for you, except you need to make a Linux-Swap partition of 512mb.

I too have an older Toshiba,its a 2535 cds p1 mmx@.300mhz with 96 megs ram.Ive had good luck with pup 4.0 and a few pupplets built off of pup 4.0 Alsa has been my only real issue as I have to re start it every boot.BUT found what could solve it to my satisfaction see this post- http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57795.

@Loose is it only 5 and on we will need bigger swaps?I have a puppy called scorpion on the above machine with a 192 swap and it never uses more than 3/4ths of it?

Later Pups generally need more Memory (RAM and /or Swap).
Puppy 431 seems to be happy with Total Memory of 512mb. Puppy 412 can handle much less Memory than that, but I depend on a USB Wireless Modem for my Web connection, and 412 doesn't support USB Wireless, so I use 431 or one of the 431 Retros (depending on what agrees with the computer).
I've found with Pentium 3 and 4 hardware that 431 or 431 Retro works 80 - 90 percent of the time, while Puppy Lucid only worked on 1 PC out of 5 I tried it with. The 1 success story was a Pentium 2 Dell laptop with 96mb RAM. It wouldn't even boot Lucid until I connect up 512mb of Swap on a USB Drive, but then Lucid ran perfectly as a Frugal Install. However as a Full Install on the same PC, it had the problem of not "remembering" ALSA settings and Xorg settings from one session to the next. But no such probs with the Frugal Install.

@fumifire if your in the U.S., i have near me a small mom N pop pc shop thats got the ram we need for these older lappys in stock ill see if they have a e-bay store(not sure if they sell on e bay or not) i got a 64 meg for mine for $10 usd ( they are only a 10 min drive thats why im not sure if they e bay or not)
