Wot no WP? Subject description: Word Processor for Puppy? |
|
Puppy does not have a WP
Abiword does not work!
http://www.abisource.com/support/bugs/
There I have said it . . .
Barry K asks the same question here
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01727
Recently I had to do a table in rAbidWord
Abiword failed. How? Every which way including sideways.
Sorry guys - but we are being open
I have to create text in Geany
and then bring into the Openoffice sfs which I always use in preference
I have always expected Abiword to have a limit of about 20 pages
Add pics and it starts to collapse.
Can Abiword still do twenty pages? Maybe with a following wind and if you don't scroll or edit the text.
In users mind - it is Puppy that can not even
do a bit of word processing . . .
We used to use TED and technosaurus just compiled and it works from command line in Lucid
I could not import a pic (it is a cut down compile)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=435104#435104
What about Lyx or Kword or 'pathetic writer' part of Siag?
http://siag.nu/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_word_processors
In that list is Bean - used on the Mac - nice
not been converted to Linux yet?
How about using the online wp here:
http://pupweb.org/desktop/
offline (that can be done I believe)?
Solutions please?
Can Geany be upgraded to WP status or Nicoedit?
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/NicoEdit

I just installed Ted in 435(aka 4.4 alpha1)...........I had to make it launch from the menu though. I just used the Geany icon because it was handy and I'm not chasing icons at 2am.

Hey, if there's anything else out there that has even basic support for .rtf/.doc/.odf/.odt/etc., I'm all for it.
After a handful of years, Puppy 4.3.1's version of AbiWord is basically the FIRST time I've managed to get AbiWord to work decently enough to be usable (IMO). (I described most of the problems I'd had with it in another thread, a while back - and as I mentioned there, it's probably a good WP... if it works for you.)
Wonder if someone could fork OpenOffice.org's Writer component into a stand-alone version (and, of course, whether or not OO.o would sanction that...).

LyX and Kwriter need that many dependencies that you might as well have open office.
I just did some experimenting with LyX and it is basically useless in short form, needs a ton of dependencies to actually do anything..
TeXmacs might be ok. It compiles ok, but it is limited to what formats it can deal with, but so long as it can deal with postscript and pdf then it's useful.. especially for scientists. (Time travelers???). It is still hefty though with the TeX and guile dependencies needed.
Dilemma ...

I also had a look at TED today and it is very fast and It's only 3M compressed.
I read that it is able to read and write Word DOC files but I couldn't figure out how to do it. RTF and TXT files seems ok though. It does provide most of the basic functions and is simple enough to use.
For the average user it may be adequate but for serious writers I would still suggest OO. I have never liked Abiword as it always seems to have problems with large documents.

I've used Abiword for years, both in Windows and Linux. It's fine for basic text. But when you try anything fancy, like tables or graphics, it becomes either awkward or completely useless.
I had a look at Ted by getting the Debian package plus libpcre3. It works OK but only uses the RTF format. I'm guessing that some anti-MS zealots will complain about this. And there does not appear to be any support for DOC/DOCX files, which really limits its utility.

Hello, gang,
Indeed, unfortunately, abiword has always had many limitations that make it unsuitable for continuous or serious or long-winded writing. docx conversion in abiword v. 2.8 and later is a great feature, but once your document is converted, you may prefer to write or edit it with one of the following applications.
Try this as an alternative:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-3/textmaker-2002_full.pet
a special free version offered for Puppy 3.0,
Or this, if you have wine installed:
http://www.logiciels-pour-tous.net/f/view/Atlantis-Nova.html
(The newer shareware version is well worth the small amount of money.)
For simpler needs (it's not wysiwyg per se) , there's angel-writer, also to be used with wine, a modest but very efficient rtf editor. http://www.angelicsoftware.com/en/angel-writer.html
If you're basically a writer and have no need for tables or pictures, you could choose RoughDraft, also a wine program. It has easy file location and text-insertion systems. http://www.salsbury.f2s.com/roughdraft/RDraft30.exe
For platform-independent and free docx conversion, you can go here:
http://www.zamzar.com/
If you want a good java editor, there's:
rtext -- http://fifesoft.com/rtext/ (nice print preview) and
jedit -- http://jedit.org/ (lots of plugins)
(It seems there is no such thing as a java word processor.)
All of the above are free and could put your WP woes to rest! Voilà! Problem solved!

Ideally, we might also want something that could take the place of AbiWord and be included and usable out-of-the-box in a Puppy derivative. That'd tend to rule out anything that requires Java, Wine, and of course, OpenOffice.

I read a review of Linux Word processors like 6 months ago, They recommended Kword over abiword/Open Office for doc files, also I had Kword working in the past in a around 30MB pet, Probably if I tried real hard I could bring it down to about 20-25MB, which is a far cry from Open Office. Actually If puppy dropped gtk and went with QT like I mentioned in the past, It really wouldn't add add that much to the distro. But it would take a lot of work figuring out all the replacement apps and scripts.

RSH has found that AbiWord has a missing lib.
I suggest it would be useful for people try reproducing errors they have encountered, but with the fix installed (running from terminal to check for errors)
see
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=77122
of course, your error may be totally unrelated - but its worth a shot...

This was mentioned today.
Death to Microsoft Word
" A Word file is the story-fax of the early 21st century: cumbersome, inefficient, and a relic of obsolete assumptions about technology. It's time to give up on Word.
http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/hometech/death-to-microsoft-word-20120412-1wta8.html#ixzz1rtqhYp9K
And
" This piece started out as a Gmail message, which saved automatically and was easy to access at home, at the office, or on my phone in transit.
Then I switched over to TextEdit,
which gives me a bigger window to work with
and handles line breaks more cleanly than Gmail does "
"""""
TextEdit

::::::

" TextEdit is a simple, open source word processor and text editor, first featured in NeXT's NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP. It is now distributed with Mac OS X since Apple Inc.'s acquisition of NeXT, and available as a GNUstep application for other Unix-compatible operating systems such as Linux.[1] It is powered by Apple Advanced Typography and has many advanced typography features. So as I know nothing about evil Macs,
can we use this somehow.

Softmaker Office |
|
I like Softmaker Office 2008, it includes WP, spreadsheet and presentations and weighs in at 54mb. A tad lighter than Open Office.
It can be downloaded from here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33223649/softmakeroffice2008.pet
One caveat is that you need to register to get the license key, although this is free and you can get it from here:

I just use word grinder. Ctrl+Alt+backspace into the command prompt session then start word grinder and you can't beat it. The developer warned me to use the autosave feature for any real work. XD
...But back to the topic at hand, I uninstalled Abiword.
Of course I do writings, not coding. I think ted is a nice alternative to Nano.
It's ridiculously tiny.
I think it would be really useful to get fogger ported off ubuntu and onto other linux. Puppy would benefit from running web applications as standalone programs.

word grinder here
http://www.wisdom-seekers.com/puppy.html#office
there was an even simpler console editor someone wrote specifically for Puppy . . .
these however are barely text editors (though extremely useful)
