Using default desktop

#843 Post by shinobar »

Luci-212 on Qemu virtual machine.

Auto desktop, auto LAN connection with no problem.
Appears first run configuration window... close.
Run mouse/keyboard wizard from the main menu, change keyboard layout to jp106.
It fails. The file /etc/keymap is corrupt:

Code: Select all

(process:10990): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

Gtk-WARNING (recursed) **: Locale not supported by C library.
	Using the fallback 'C' locale.
jp106
It can be a bug of the input-wizard, but it is caused by the missing of the locale. A solution is to contain en_US locale in /usr/lib/locale of the live CD.

Another problem. Try to change keyboard model, it fails because the wizard cannot get the keyboard description from xorg.conf.

What configuration file using the default desktop?

Taking a break from graphics testing, decided to install some packages.

Installed both Midori and Arora browsers a few hours ago and both are working fine. They both have played a number of Youtube videos with no problems.Posting from Arora right now.

Installed VLC earlier and it's played everything I've thrown at it so far.Disclaimer....haven't tried every format....

Need to welcome WhoDo on board too.I'm sure he'll work his magic and make Lucid Puppy look even better. :)

Shinobar, You can change the keyboard at first run with the Video, Keyboard & Language button (which runs xorgwizard). You can also change the keyboard anytime with the Menu option *if* you have created an xorg.conf by using the video, KB & Language Chooser on first run. What we will be adding is a way to run the Video, KB & Language changer later on after first run. it will be just a button, but we will have to catch the Keybaord menu option so as to create an xorg.conf.

Yes, we will also be adding en_US in /usr/lib/locale by default. Lucky we ahd done some of this one time already ;-) Thanks.

I cannot understand why xorg.conf is not created at the first run.

Running console is pain especially for non english readers. The console cannnot display multibyte charactors, so translation cannot be any help.
I prefer GUI something like: Image

BK:s latest statement about console resolution problem. I have used video=640x480 since I got my new laptop with all recent kernel puppies succesfully with my intel and ati dual graphics. Vga_switcheroo would be the next nice addition.

playdayz,

i've completed the small tray icon firewall app in Lucid 212. It's quite small and can be put in the iso for single run, it can then be removed by the user.

It's basically a reminder to set the firewall on. With left click it launches the firewall wizard. With right click a menu appears with the firewall wizard plus the IP reporting wizard. There's also a version report which returns the current version you are using based on DISTRO_SPECS.

So 'Lucid Puppy 212' or whatever, is returned in a small gtk window.

There's an option to remove it completely as well.

I've put the pet in additional software/network.

You may find it useful for the iso.

The Next Step Towards Lucid Puppy 5.1 - Luci-212

#851 Post by Billtoo »

I did a full install of 212 and installed every pet in quickpet and almost
every pet in the puppy-lucid repository in puppy package manager.
Then I updated puppy package manager repositories and added the
three ubuntu repositories. After restarting puppy package manager I installed nexuiz,
openarena,sauerbraten,pokerth,tunapie,gweled,and that's it I think.

Everything in quickpet and the puppy-lucid repository downloaded and installed
with no problems.I haven't tried all the programs yet but everything that I
have tried so far seems to work okay.

The applications I installed from the ubuntu repositories don't always start
from the menu, nexuiz and tunapie do but openarena, pokerth, gweled, and
sauerbraten have to be started by dragging their icon in /usr/games to the
desktop and then just clicking on the icon (not always a pretty icon) will launch the game.

I did a frugal install on my acer apsire which has the best graphics card and
installed openarena, nexuiz, google earth, stellarium and lots of other apps and
it works great. The graphics in the large games are beautiful and nexuiz plays
perfectly with the settings set to high.I think this is pretty amazing on a frugal
install.

thanks

First of: what a wonderful project and awful lot of work and testing

Though this is not a big issue for me and, happens on all puppies, I thought just let you know.

When I turn on my external drives through fw and or usb through pcmcia -after- setup they do not appear.

Again, I can survive :) with-out it, but just in case.

Like the streams of our Dutch commercial rtv stations, they stream almost everything with moonlight (silverlight in linux). Seems to be very hard prob for linux users. Again "just to let you know" in case somebody was wondering ":no idea what I will do today" :D

/mnt/home weirdness

#853 Post by darwinev0lved »

Testing out luci 212 still.
On the first boot after creating a pupsave file, Puppy creates a symlin called home in /mnt to /initrd/mnt/dev_save

This is great and useful and means I can stick a load of things there - and currently luci also sticks the java and openoffice install there too. I normally put my firefox profile there as well.

However, when I boot again, it's all gone wrong.
/mnt/home is no longer a symlink but an actual directory - the java directory has turned up there too and this breaks, well lots of things. I had to install chromium just to post this message.
I tried deleting /mnt/home and recreating the symlink to dev_save, but it doesn't 'take' - the next time I reboot, /mnt/home is a directory again.

Any ideas?

Regards, Jon

Hi all
Just installed a new Nvidia geforce 210 graphics card, the installation was easy (even for me) and perfect results (using the easypet download)

well done

When lucid was in the direct boot to desktop phase earlier this remark has been made by quite some people, including me. Then the decision was made to do the classical boot where a keyboard was selected. This was appreciated by all those people with national language keyboards.

So I was surprised the direct boot to desktop was there again, making all those people with national keyboards unhappy again.

I found this test page for language support.
This is a quick way to determine what languages
your browser (and text editor) supports.

Hi WhoDo, since you've been appointed as Art Director in 5.1, could we have 24x24 menu and desktop connect icons please, it always looks so much better when I change them, plus you can delete a wack of extra 16x16 icons that are included in puppy, they are redundant icon from the past, usually I install the full gtk2 icons and system link them, That way extra gtk2 icons will appear in gtk2 programs menus, also they can be manually added to rox.

direct boot to desktop

I appreciate direct boot to desktop if GUI keyboard changer assosiated.
Please look up pup-431JPqs3.iso. It goes directory to default desktop, and easy to change language(Japanese/English), keyboard and etc.
