Newbie - Ubuntu/windows converter Subject description: REcommendations |
|
I love the concept of Puppy being able to run on computers with no hardrive- A VERY BIG ADVantage!! THat is the reason I am converting because my hardrive failed . ANyways, I think Puppy should concentrate on fixing volume issues because I have had volume issues on both of my computters with Puppy/teenpup . I also think Puppy should concentrate on making their usb install better because I have tried many times to make it work , and it still doesnt work -_- thANKS FOR THE GREAT DISTRO

Have you repaired your pupsave so that it properly/cleanly unmounts on shutdown? This was my biggest source of "volume issues".
Read my post about 1/2 way down the page:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57072
The other thing that will help is to perform a "fsck" on every boot (this can be inserted into your menu.lst, or if you are booting from CD, you can patch the CD to perform a check on every boot).
The "fsck" takes very little time if the pupsave was cleanly unmounted. And is important if you didn't cleanly unmount...

Some find programs intuitive and like to use trial and error to work things out over time.
Personally I don't have that luxury. I want an O/S that works and if it doesn't it should be easy to fix.
I need documentation on the programs in the distribution so I can get to the heart of it quickly.

Puppy was an excellent choice for me. I was trying to resurrect a Thinkpad R30 (not a bad computer, just the 8mb shared memory video card). XP was OK, but i wanted to try linux since liveboot of ubuntu 10.04 was too slow.
Boots up in about 1 minute.
Just one problem i have with it (being a windows "expert" but a linux newbie)
Some of the software you can get IS NOT THE LATEST version. For example, WINE. It is not working correctly and i believe that it could support my programs on puppy if Puppy could support the latest version (in the puppy package manager at least).
Also using Legacy GRUB. 1.98 is out, they may try that out, unless it craps up on older computers.

problem to read comics Subject description: I could not install comix, cbrpager or comical properly |
|
I love puppy linux, it's very stable and very fast on my old computers.
Unfortunately, as I'm a newbie, I wasn't able to install properly comix or any other comics reading program. That's why I had to revert to easy peasy on one of my computers, to have comix working properly.
I've been running puppy 5.0, then 5.01 and right now luci-210.
Thanks to all the enthusiasts who are doing a great job.

puppy not house trained |
|
spent several days straight with puppy, if this is "easy to use" then how does anyone ever use linux? after a week solid i still cannot get the screen resolution set, nor make a bootable pendrive of another linux distro, my wi-fi disconnects ON THIS MACHINE ONLY every couple of minutes, the documentation is written in martian (and i'm a guy who wrote the code for my websight by hand, built my own bicycle out of bamboo and carbon fibre, and processed an entire movie by hand, so i'm relatively intelligent and "willing to get my hands dirty", while not knowing the specifics of linux) oh, and what about adjusting the track pad (one of the few things i was able to do, though shouldnt it be easier than editing the xorg.cfg file by hand?). perhaps i am a cretin but i cannot get the terminal emulator to do anything, or even replicate commands that i copy from other sources.
the goofy icons-and icons alone do not make for ease of use-. and cutesy names enrage me as i pour through endless forums of fanboi linuxxxporn sights trying to get any answers at all.
i thought about switching to linux because i'm outraged that to open new pdf documents i have to buy a whole new computer (mac os platform), but given the week of my life i've wasted on linux, i could've just worked a job and bought a new hateful mac and it would s=ck but at least it would work.....
ANYONE WHO HAS SUGGESTIONS FOR A BASIC GUIDE TO BASIC LINUX CONCEPTS I WOULD APPRECIATE IT HIGHLY. google has been unable to find me one. thanks

1. Look through the many posts noting how easy puppy linux is to set up and use, and then realize that the problem may be YOU.
2. Trashing what you don't understand isn't very helpful.
3. If you need help with something, try asking a simple, intelligent question. Try a little humility. Nobody is impressed that you built your own bicycle.

reinstall helps |
|
reinstalled puppy, it actually works now, and in my first couple hours with it it works very very well. thanks to all who have contributed to the project.
i've been using a "smart" fone with windows mobile on it, and thus grown accustomed to the idea of an operating system that is barely functional, so it never occoured to me that it might have been an install issue.
i have to say that i was a bit hot under the collar when i posted as i was logged off my wifi connection 3 or 4 times in the 20 minutes while trying to join and post (the only way to reconnect was to run the entire network wizard from start to finish), after 8 hours of frustration and literally nothing working that was just too much.
btw, glad to hear that "no one" was "impressed" by any of my accomplishments, as that was not my intent. i was merely trying to demonstrate my level of self initiative and willingness to muck around on the inside of things, to explore, to try to understand (as opposed to being a "use it right out of the box, have things spoon fed to me" kind of person) .which i am lead to believe is what linux is all about and why i am interested in using it.
btw, what was the sample size of the poll to establish "nobody"?

I think "CatDude" would be able to help.
Something like his signature banner?

I do hope you got permission from Catdude to use his logo?
It would surely need modifying, as it shows/scrolls with his hardware?
If you don't want to be reported as a spammer, I suggest that you -
A/ Put a live link to your firefox download, so as to properly promote it
B/ Put a link to Puppy's Home page, so people get more info
http://www.puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm
C/ Try Puppy linux yourself - There is a Puppy webserver, you know
http://www.browserpuppy.com/server.html
Just 74Mb - You can use this OS portable on a USB drive or install it to your harddisk.
For web developers who need a lightweight server OS with LAMP, Bluefish, FTP-server installed.
HTH
PS I leave it up to the Admins whether it's Spam or not
