I was able to use a tar command, but it seems that'make' or 'make install' does not work. Is this true? If so, how would I go from here?

Have you installed usr_devx.sfs? It is a development addon that contains programs such as make, gcc, perl, etc. It's 40 or so megabytes, and can be found in the same place as the Puppy iso you download. If using an option 2 harddrive install, put it in /. If using anything else, put it in the same location of the harddrive as pup001 (/mnt/home/ from within Puppy, probably C:\ in Windows).
Then reboot, and you should be good to go.

I should have figured the development system was missing. I just wanted to bring one app I found. Not about ready to go deep. Still pretty much swimming on the Linux surface. Maybe, I'll try to get it working in Mepis (another grub selection on HD) , and then move it over to Puppy.
