Hello there..
i already try to search for this problem..
and found something, but non of them work..

i have old PC, with processor about 800 Mhz and 320 SDRAM *very old, i know* and my internal drive broken..

so when i heard about Linux Puppy, i make Live CD from Puppy ISO 5.0.1
but when it begin to boot, Kernel Panic Showed Up..

G'day and welcome to Puppy,
Your PC has similar specs to one of mine and Puppy 501 won't run on mine either. Try one of these Puppies and see how you go:

how and what is Linux Swap partition? i had an 80 Gb external Hard drive..
any tutorial for this?

G'day,
To run the latest Puppies you need about 512mb of RAM. A Linux-Swap partition is part of a Drive that Puppy uses as extra "virtual RAM" to make up for a shortage of real RAM.

You have 320mb of RAM, so if you make a Linux-Swap partition of 200mb on the external Hard Drive your Total Memory (RAM + Swap) would come up to 520mb and you could try the later Puppy versions like Puppy 501, 431 or 431 Retro.

I suggested Puppy 412 or 412 Retro (which are a couple of years old) because they need less RAM so they might work OK on your computer without Swap.

Until 7 months ago I'd never used Puppy or any other Linux and I've got a lot of help from this Forum. So I don't mind helping out other Newbies if I can.

Let us know how it works out.

To make a 512mb Swap Partition on the Hard Drive
- boot up Puppy from the CD. At the first pause in the boot sequence press F2 and type puppy pfix=ram
- click Menu > System > Gparted
- select the Drive (it will be called sda or something like that)
- shrink a partition on the Drive by 512mb, This will create 512mb of Unallocated Space
- right-click on the Unallocated Space and select New.
- in the window that opens, under File System select Linux-Swap, then click Add. Then up the top of that window click Apply.
- when Gparted is finished click Close and you should now have a 512mb Swap partition on your Drive.

Puppy should detect the Swap and use it automatically next time you reboot. If the Swap is on an external USB Hard Drive it must be plugged in before you boot and don't unplug it while Puppy is running.

Check the size and MD5 of your Puppy ISO, maybe it's corrupt. Kernel panics happen when there's no enough memory or the initramfs is corrupted. The latter happens when the ISO is corrupted.

With 320mb RAM and no Swap, Puppy 501 is not going to run well. Hence my suggestion for Puppy 412 or 412 Retro. If 200mb of Swap is created, then it will be interesting to see if Puppy 501 is able to boot up.

With Pentium 2 and 3 hardware, I found Lupu worked perfectly on 1 computer and didn't work in 4 others. Of the 4 that didn't work, 2 got the "Kernel Panic - not syncing" mesage and the other 2 booted, but had serious problems with Drives being mis-read or not detected at all. Puppy 431 Retro worked on all 4 of these computers without a hitch.

While we are on the subject. Is there a way to get puppy to leave my Ubuntu swap partition alone. I have a ton of ram and hd space. so is it possible to have a separate swap partition just for puppy? Or even just a swap file on the puppy partition? using pup-432 frugal with 4gig ram. I have never known puppy to use a swap partition with this amount of ram available but it still mounts the swap partition and Ubuntu thinks it needs to fix it.

With that much RAM I'm surprised you need Swap at all.

You should click the New Topic button (bottom left of the screen) and start a new Thread about your specific problem, rather than hijacking an existing Thread.

i already try your suggestion, but it result new problem.. hehehe..
when i try to reboot from Luppu 5.0.1 the result was,
"kernel panic - not syncing, attempted to kill idle task.."

and now when i try Luppy 4.1.2, the result was,
"kernel panic - not sycing, attempted to kill init.."

hmm.. i'll try the older Luppy, any suggestion what version?

are you checking the downloads with md5sum? you need to do that, as these sorts of errors can be cause by a bad D/L

It would be a good idea to try booting a different computer with some of your CDs (you must have quite a collection by now

) as an absolute final "sanity check" that the CDs are OK. It could also be the CD Drive, in which case I'd try booting from Floppy and saving to a USB Stick.

I know I am posting this very late but I will post it anyway in case someone finds it helpful

I had the same "Kernel Panic - not syncing" error once when I was trying to get puppy to run on a troublesome computer

This is how I solved it: first boot Puppy off the live CD and press F2 to go into the options mode, then get Puppy to boot in command line

After this start the Graphical User Interface (XServer) manually using the command xwin

if this doesn't work or you need to set up puppy for your particular video hardware, you can try the command xorgwizard
