I'm an old DOS guy, got my first and only cert from a small company in UT called Novell, you may have heard of them. SO basically I'm a hardware and networking guy. Not a programmer, unfortunately for both my job potential and bank account

I went along with Windows cause every one I worked for/with was also. But when Linux started getting popular back in 98 I got interested and started with red Hat, then the most popular. But it was hard and difficult to use and many of the programs I wanted were not in .rpm's or even available for Linux. Time went on and I was out of the computer business directly and teaching (I have a MBA). I got back into Linux briefly but it still did not have what I wanted/needed. Yet it always felt good to get back to the command line, like I was really in control again.

Now I am unemployed, and at 61 probably unemployable. I don't have the money to upgrade a laptop or a desktop (I have 1 laptop that's 6 or 7 years old and 2 emachines that are 5 years old). The Windows XP got corrupted on the laptop and since I will be losing my apartment for lack of money I have been spending time building it with puppy 5.1.

Happy to say that so far I am only missing a few applications. But I'll look around and see what's out there. Everything else, from home banking to torrent downloads is there. I'll more than get by; and the price is MORE THAN RIGHT!!

I just want to say thanks to all the programmers and forum users who have posted similar problems to mine and from whom I have learned more than a little about both puppy and Linux in general. If I was a programmer I'd contribute some programs myself. If I was employed I'd contribute money, but all can do now is stand on the sidelines and cheer --

Go back as far as you can.

After it finishes... reboot and see if you get lucky."

You can also use the Vista boot ERD
which won't see your install >> keep going
has addititional tools.

Generally speaking if you can get into Windows and you are a dead duck,
nothing else works >> use Combofix.
Takes time... be patient.

I would try the Falcon first...and ERD
Go back as far as you can with System Restore.

Welcome to the puppy kennels. Yeah,...I'm already retired, so I know about keeping older computers and watching the $$$$. I've got several computers, and a Puppy of some kind is on each of them. I'm not a programmer, either,.....just a very satisfied end-user.

Well I really need a decent accounting system. I was using Quicken but way too expensive several years ago. Was using GnuCash rather successfully in windows. Have tried Homebank but import/export does not do OFX and why in the hell would you do a proprietary version of .csv for import/export? beats me and defeats the purpose of having open source in my opinion.

I also do semi-professional photography and would love to have a lightroom in Linux, but that's not going to happen and frankly I can wait for that as accounting is the first priority.

On another subject I don't understand some of the other messages, I really was not looking for help in getting Windows back up; when it crashed I decided to look for a Linux recovery and found puppy.. I decided then to give it a try for the rescue and with only a problem in the xserver (can't get it to read card and display properly so it ends up 800x600 not 1024).

I guess you need drivers for your graphics card. Otherwise, try xvesa until you get them Smile

paladin_pc, good to have you on board!

Years ago, I gave my local education authority a bit of earache requesting a 'Linux for beginners' course - blank looks, they had nobody on the wavelength.

Now, I am minded to offer them my services to deliver the course they could not then provide.

Puppy IMHO is the ideal vehicle on which to base such a course. If you have - any - teaching experience, and you love Puppy, that might just be a winner for you.
