Link(s) needed for bootup options [ SOLVED ]

#1 Post by Karl Godt »

Hello everyone!
My full name is Karl Reimer Godt and this is my first post at www.murga-linux.com.
My first experiences with Linux are SuSE 6.2 6xCD and Debian 3.1 (1x9 GB DVD) several years ago.
I thought that I was a not so "new-be" but after established Internet Connection first at the beginning of this year I had to recognize that Linux<>Linux.
At LQ.org I was supposed to try Puppy Linux at April this year and I needed time to find out more about.
I downloaded (Puppy-, MacPup_Opera2-, MacPup_Foxy3-)4.3.1; LHPup normal and large 4.4.x, KDPup X.Y. Quirky 110 and found some older 4.2,4.1,3. versions on CD/DVD.

So I think that I have introduced myself a little.....
(I am not a programmer or IT-tech; I read and do a lot and (unfortunately) forget a lot (especially details).

I have to say that all linux have some flaws but the things that I need most are internet and printing and the "tiny" Puppy (4.3.1) can support both and I am thinking of sacrificing suse 9.2 5xCD/2DVD for not beeing able to connect to internet and setting up printing: first just nonstop paperflowing without printing and now totally responseless...

So I installed MacPup_Opera2-4.3.1 and this now is my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

Code: Select all

If you are using a frugal install with grub, I have never had the install actually work without modification.
For a frugal install, try:

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title MacPup_Opera2 (root (hd0,0) on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /macpup/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=normal psubdir=macpup
initrd /macpup/initrd.gz
#Linux configuration ends

This will boot a frugal install from a subdirectory called macpup with the directory containing vmlinux, initrd.gz, and the macpup sfs file.
The subdirectory entry is needed to tell grub where to look for files and also where to create the pupsave.2fs file.

Hope that helps.

First of all: full or frugal install?

Second: What do you actually want to do - just boot Puppy, have the choice of booting Puppy or Suse ... ?

For what it is worth here is my menu.lst for a full install on a hard drive:

# Start GRUB global section
timeout 5
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
# End GRUB global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title xxx Puppy
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends

All other lines in menu.lst have # in front. I left them simply because I "may" need them one day.

Note the xxx in title just hides my name.

G'day and welcome to Puppy,
Here is some info that I found very helpful when I started with Puppy:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29356
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42876

I have both Full and Frugal Installs of Puppy 431 Retro on my Pentium 4 Desktop PC (768mb RAM, 80gb HDD) and my Grub kernel line (for both Full and Frugal) has this in it:
nosmp

Many people with old computers like mine also need some of these things in the kernel line:
pci=noacpi
acpi=off
acpi=force
acpi=noirq
acpi=strict
pci=biosirq
pci=nosort
irqpoll
routeirq

Also, it would help to know:
- is your computer Pentium 2, 3, 4, Core Duo, Netbook, or what ?
- how much RAM and Linux-Swap do you have ?
- How big is the Hard Drive ?

HARDWARE

#5 Post by Karl Godt »

Thanks for giving me welcome!
Please apologize for the confusion that I created!

First: MacPup_Opera2 boots up without problems since I installed it one month ago. It is very robust (though I have to reboot twice after a freeze/hangup/crash to get my wireless USB mouse and 4-port-USB-hub recognized/working; PS/2 mouse is working though (but no wheel and only two buttons); P2/2 keyboard also always o.k.)

Second: I boot it up every day!
Third: Some things happen while customizing and I have to reboot or reset several times! (mostly while scrolling at geany/rox/*browser, closing tabs on and off line; xosview showes full CPU usage for 15 to 45 seconds, keyboard lights CapsLock+ScrollLock blinking like at kernel panic at boot up because of to little RAM)

Fourth: I got the message ext4fs unclean and has to be fixed.
Fifth: I wanted a choice to boot into a different runlevel/loglevel? for *mount and /sbin/fsck !

(edit: loglevel=6+7 : debug, > xwin : top: /bin/sh /usr/bin/xwin (witout ../PuppyPin) rxvt: runlevel 3 5
loglevel=5 : debug > xwin : top: with ../PuppyPin rxvt: runlevel 3 5
loglevel=4 : very little debug > xwin with ../e17
loglevel=0-3 : normal startup without debug > xwin with ../e17
CAUTION:
loglevel=-1 : also no debug > xwin ..../jwm Error message: Failed to create symlink /root/.icons/ROX
File exists (this may mean that the ROX theme already exists there,
but the mime-application postscript icon couldn`t be loaded for some
reason, or /root/.icon/ROX is a link to an invalid directory, try deleting it)[<OK]
.jwmrc=+jwmrc-tray: changed mime-type: Properties: application/ioctet-stream Not supported No run action defined Owner: read write Contents: data
so e17 /root/.e/e/themes/* has gone somehow)

Sixth: I got to "single user mode" by adding

Code: Select all

title MacPup_Opera2 maintenance mode (for *mount and /sbin/fsck)
  root (hd0,0)
  kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 rw init=/bin/bash
today.
In that mode I have not automatically /*bin commands but all the other /*/(*)/*bin . (why?)

For

Code: Select all

help (info) e3 cat find

etc I would like to have a high resolution for better overview !

Seventh: I got fs fixed:

Code: Select all

Starting up ...
bash-3.00# /sbin/runlevel
unknown
bash-3.00# /sbin/fsck
fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)

e2fs_check_if_mount: Can`t check if filesystem is mounted due to missing mtab file while determining whether /dev/sda1 is mounted.
fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program ?
bash-3.00# umount /dev/sda1
mount: no /proc/mounts
Error, do this: mount -t proc none /proc
umount : can`t umount /dev/sda1: Invalid argument
bash-3.00# mount -t proc none /proc
bash-3.00# umount /dev/sda1

none on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
bash-3.00# umount /dev/root
bash-3.00# /sbin/fsck
... and it went with several (y)
and I am pleased with that!

Also for forgotten password:

Code: Select all

bash-3.00# passwd
Changing password for root
New password: woofwoofwoof
Retype password: woofwoofwoof
Password for root changed by root
bash-3.00#
C+A+DEL for reboot, xwin: top: /bin/sh /usr/bin/xwin (=xwin fvwm* without .../PuppyPin)
rxvt: # runlevel
3 5
#

plogout > Exit to prompt

Code: Select all

# runlevel
2 3
# logout

# login
puppypc login: root
Password: woofwoof
Login incorrect
puppypc login: root
Password: woofwoofwoof
#
Eighth: I use to install separately at the moment and connect the disks afterwards by changing /boot/grub/menu.lst root (hdx,y) and /etc/fstab, /etc/mtab /dev/*d*x et cetera
btw: Puppy uses a /etc/mtab -link but I am used to find /etc/mtab -files!
I guess Puppy uses a dynamic mtab writer ....?

Quantum: Puppy 3,8 GB swap 200+ MB
Seagate: SuSE 17 GB swap 1,6+ GB

BUT PUPPY DESERVES A BETTER PALACE !
I`ll keep SuSE for kstars, man, apropos but for executing printing and surfing I am applying Puppy ( I am running it at the moment ...)
I managed to import xosview and xephem 3.5.2 to Puppys` place and it is running: xosview without problems (startup-entry, gexec working) and xephem from rxvt/gexec with a link to the shellscript and not to the binary.
freememapplet-1.2.2.-1 was the "bad guy" I installed together with firefox-2.0.0.7 and xterm-229-1.
So I did uninstall freememapplet that I downloaded from tu chemnitz.
For the moment I am customizing /root/.jwmrc ........

And Last: FULL-Install and I do not dare to save some -pup-save-files to some folders or LVM ("The Puppy ate my fedora" I read at Lq.org)

What I really would like is a complete list for the KERNEL BOOT UP OPTIONS !
If there are any..... (like vga=? or swapon -a)?
(btw: I really don`t know the /etc/fstab option entries like relatime,barrier either; but learning by doing!)
(rw must be readwrite but could also be used for recursivewildcard....) :wink:

vga=ask debug very interesting kernel boot appendings

#6 Post by Karl Godt »

HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE A SOLUTION FOR VGA :

WHILE GOOGLING/ASKING AROUND AT OPERA 10.10 THAT WAS FLAWLESSLY WORKING YESTERDAY AND EVEN THE MOUSECLICKS WORKING ON THE SUBMENUES
(FORMER I HAD TO PRESS ENTER FOR OPEN LINK IN NEW TAB OR ADD TO BOOKMARK OK)
I FOUND A PAGE AT O`REILLY.DE THAT SHOWED

Code: Select all

vga=ask   vga=extended

FROM A BOOK CALLED RUNNING LINUX (edit: Puppy at live mode ate MacPup while fsck so similar : LINK )

vga=ask showed the menu I once was introduced to at KNOPPIX Live CD/DVD

and scan showed up also BIOS video modes. It looks like vga=normal is 0 F00 80x25 VGA and vga=extended 1 F01 80x50 VGA.
I tried also 6 (F07 80x60 VGA); but best was 164 (132x60 BIOS).
I also tried z (345 1600x1200x8) but vesa just gave blank screen without even blinking cursor but it booted into X e17 flawlessly!

But most happy I felt "King of the Day" yesterday by adding debug right out of the blue :D

Code: Select all

title MacPup_Opera2 maintenance mode (for *mount and /sbin/fsck)
  root (hd0,0)
  kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 rw vga=ask debug init=/bin/bash
that showed the bootup messages to find out where the boot process hangs for a while:

Code: Select all

ata3.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.01: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
ata3.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.01: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
ata3.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.01: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
ata3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
ata3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
ata3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x5)
md: Waiting for all devices to be available before autodetect
md: If you don't use raid, use raid=noautodetect
it is not long (perhaps one minute) so I think I don`t dive further into this.

But swapon=all, swapon -a, swapon=/dev/sdb2 and resume=/dev/sdb2 don`t funktion.
(edit: swapon::

This parameter enables usage of local swap partitions.

You are welcome. :)
Also know that there are two kinds of parameters(cheatcodes):
kernel and distro-specific.
For example, "acpi=force" or "vga=xxx" are kernel parameters and
"psubdir=xxx" is a distro-specific parameter.

While experimenting with the compilation of a kernel I stumbled over
(Try "man bootparam" ) at i.e. Parallel printer support / CONFIG_PRINTER [ search '/' &| Help ]

and there really exists the manpage bootparam . They are resembling much the same >
