PostPosted: Tue 15 Jun 2010, 02:05    Post subject: KDE pup resolution, networksetup, application questions

Have just tried KDPUP on my Intel D865GLC MB with 1GB RAM.

I had a problem configuring xorg. I usually run Puppy 4.3.1 at 1600x1200, and SLAX 6.1.2 at 1200x1024. For KDPUP I chose 1600x1200, but it gave me 1900x1200. It looks fine, but the icons and menu text are too small. I tried changing the resolution from the desktop, but would always get kicked back to the command line. The only other resolution that worked, 1200x1024, used only the top 2/3 of the screen of my 20" CRT.

I ran the default video player, but was unlable to get controls for pause or fast forward. Is there a fix?

I tried to go online, but couldn't get a connection. I looked for a way to configure the network (I've got an Intel 10/100 ethernet card connected to an ADSL modem and a router). But don't know how to set up the network. Is there a tool for this?

I also wonder whether one can set up users, so one doesn't have to go online as root.

And finally, how does one install applications - like xfprot, for instance?

You can't setup users - it's based on puppy, not multiuser
For network setup there's tool in either network or settings menu, puppy network tools are same as in other pups and so is the network wizard for lan cards.
For xorg - maybe you can try manually editing xorg.conf then restart X
Not sure what do you mean by default player not having controls - where from did you run it?
Clicked on some video file? which format was it?

Ok. I found the wizard and got online ok with FF

I finally managed to set up at 1600x1200, but have to settle for 60Hz. With Puppy I can usually go 70 Hz. for that resolution.

Yes. Clicked on file. Player is FFplayer. Files tried were flv and mp4. Looked for another player and tried Mplayer (?). That gave me some controls. Having trouble telling which entries in the Multimedia menu are AV.

Still wondering about installing plug-ins and add-on apps. Specifically miss:

UFRAW - I have a v. 015 pet that works in Puppy 4.3.1

GIMP doesn't natively support my RAW files.

X-FPROT antivirus

FOXIT - for better pdf management

Another issue:

In the save process, display shows:

" For PCs with less than 256MB of RAM Lenny doesn't copy KDPUP-484.sfs to RAM."

Does that mean that the pfix=copy command is redundant? Or does it refer only to the the save files.

I booted normally after creating the save file (only 25MB) and then tried to import bookmarks into FF, which immediately froze the system so that I had to do a hard reset.

Is this because I didn't set up a swap file? Doesn't make much sense to me, since I've got 1 GB of RAM. How much RAM could FF be using for this little task? I didn't even get to the file navigator.

FFplay doesn't have gui commands indeed, other players as mplayer or smplayer frontend might be better,
I think KPDF does pretty good for pdf but if you want to try foxit find some pet on forum? to install pets in konqueror right click on pet "open with" enter "petget" and check "Always use for this filetype" so it remembers association.

Puppy Package manager is also there in settings menu
Haven't used xfprot no idea sorry it's not in debian repo.
Maybe if you find some older pet with gtk1 libs

ufraw: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=ufraw

Install lenny or squeeze version^

Don't know what to tell you more, you have package manager, kdpup supports pets, debs, and can install other packages probably natively

Thanks for your suggestions. I went to the linked site and downloaded both UFRAW-Gimp and UFRAW following your instructions. But afterward got the message "***.deb failed to install.

Do I need to download and install the long list of dependencies first or during the installl?

I'm using dpup safe browser right now, and it seems not to retain passwords as advertised.

Had some major problem with lockup of the system earlier, possibly because of lacking space on my USB stick. I saw "copying RAM to USB" at the top of the display just before everythijng went south. I now have a 2GB swap file, so the save file is the only other thing I can think of.

One thing I miss is the "free space readout". That might have saved me some problems. I tried pfix=fsck on first reboot after lockup, and that went nowhere too. After 20 minutes (how long can it take to check a 25MB file?) I reset, dumped the 2fs file, and started fresh. Maybe that's why the install failed - no save file yet?

Definitely think there should be an onscreen display of free space in the save file. Have lost everything (I mean weeks of work) in the past because a save file filled up and couldn't be salvaged.

Well, I created a 512MB 2fs file, wrote the sfs file to the hdd, rebooted, and tried the two UFRAW deb packages again. This time I stayed online with dpup safe browser while trying the install. Both failed again, no idea why.

I'm also having a strange problem saving web pages with Dpup browser. Whenever I try to save a page to disk, I get a dozen or more error popups, each of which I have to close. This happens both with the "complete" and the "html only" options. Have never seen this with Seamonkey.

this is what the popups say:

Quote:
/mnt/home/Murga-Linux09/kde_dpup/kdpup5_files/kdpup-kbfx2-800x600.jpg could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.

It's been a while since I was testing Dpup but I know the Dpup safe browser was designed to not allow anything to be saved. Gposil explains it briefly here.......

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. I guess the error message could be clearer.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with the other browser choices or petget under dpup.

Can't import my Seamonkey bookmarks into Konquerer, Firerfox seems to be forgetting my "remembered" passwords.

I tried to download Seamonkey 1.1.8 from the P4 repository (should really be v. 2.0), and petget reported no dependencies required. But after the install, a whole boatload of missing ones were listed, and no sign of SM.

Finally, I tried downloading Iceweasel from the main Lenny repository with the two listed dependencies, but got download failures from all four download sites.

Xfprot 1.23 downloaded and installed, then updated, then refused to run.

Looks like another dead end for me...

I like the iceberg desktop background though..

As James said "Safe Browser" is designed not to save anything - passwords, bookmarks, etc...
It runs as user "nobody" and can only save files in /tmp and after closing firefox saved settings get erased.
Regular firefox saves my passwords and can save files to hd.

512 MB savefile should be enough in fact I think I used it with that amount and I have less ram and swap then you (768 RAM+ 1BG swap)

OK. Will try to go a few more rounds with dpup in the next few days using the regular FF browser. Wish I could get Seamonkey 2.x installed though...

Subject description: KDPUP and Nvidia drivers

Good morning Dejan
You did an excellent job fusing Puppy and KDE. Works pretty stable.

I was a Fan of the Dpup 484 too but it has one major disadvantage for me within a frugal installaton: for some reasons it does not support on my computer 24 bit colors in combination with newer NVIDIA graphics drivers. I tried many things but without success.
I was now completely surprised that your KDpup doesn't show these limitations ! Laughing
I would now be interested in what you did change to make it NVIDIA compatible.
Best regards
Christian

Hmm, I'm glad it works for you, and I'm surprised that it didn't work with 24bit on dpup but now does - I didn't add any nvidia specific modules, the only thing that I added that might affect display is open source mesa DRI package from lenny repo?
