Unable to open file /var/spool/cups/d00005-001 ??

#1 Post by mcman56 »

I am running Puppy 4, CUPS 1.3.3 and trying to print wirelessly to a Canon MX860. Setup sees the printer to select and the driver to select. When I try to print a test page, I get the error message with a Permission Denied. I can go to that directory and see the file. It is the test print page. Under permissions says "rw-, r--,---/--- root......whatever that means. How can I correct?

This is the log:

Which version of Puppy 4 are you using?

The CUPS 1.3.3 from the repo was never ready for prime-time. You would be better off upgrading to CUPS 1.3.11 from here.. Note that these instructions apply to Puppy 4.3.1.

Under help, it shows Puppy 4.3. Is 4.3.1 much different? Do I need to upgrade?

I completed the instructions but get the same result. The file properties are attached.

I just realized one other thing. The hard drive is dead so I'm booting from a DVD with pupsave on the USB. The BOIs does not have an option to boot from the USB. Does that make a difference?

Thanks for your help,

Dan

It may. Try the following commands

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/cups stop
rm -rf /var/cups
rm -rf /var/spool/cups
rm -rf /var/run/cups
rm -rf /var/cache/cups
rm -rf /var/log/cups
/etc/init.d/cups start
Then try a print job. If it works, you may need to put those commands in a script that runs each time at startup.

I just did a fresh install of Puppy 4.3.1 and upgraded the CUPS to 1.3.11 as per the instructions. I then did a simulated install of your Canon MX860 and it worked fine.

There have been other episodes where CUPS 1.3.x showed strange behaviours with USB installs. Maybe that's what you are seeing. Or maybe there are some left-over bits of the CUPS 1.3.3 install that are causing the problem.

If your hardware will run it, I would get Quirky 1.2. It has CUPS 1.3.11 built in, so the printer setup may be easier to do.

You were correct. CUPS 1.3.3 was still there. I reloaded everything and it works with 1.3.11. Thanks for your help.

everything seems good until I load cups_pdf-0.8 and then I'm back to the original error. I tried pfdprinter_pdq_ad-02 but it does not seem to work. Is there a pdf writer that I can add that will work with the cups printing components???? thanks!!

Most applications have a "Print to File" option. Have you tried it?

Well, I have learned a little more. At first, 4.3.1 will work and print correctly. Over time...maybe very soon, it looses that ability and the fault shows up. It was not related to the pdf load. Maybe something happens when it is saved or ???. Quirky was similar. It set up OK and printed but then cups would not open to let me try again...local host could not be found. In Quirky, seamonkey will also just disappear. It does not lock up but is just instantly gone. I had some other version of puppy that did that too.

Issue Resolved!!!

#11 Post by mcman56 »

After trying Quirky, I went one step further to Lucid. It comes with CUPS 1.4.2. After several days, printing is still working fine and has not developed the fault. The only odd thing I notice is that the two green lights on the Netgear wireless adapter keep blinking like it is in some kind of fault mode. However, it is working fine.

Hey mcman56,

It's been a few months and just wanted to see if printing was still okay using Quirky?

I am experiencing the same problem using Puppy 4.3.1 and my Samsung SCX-4100 printer. I may get it to work for the first time (now I can't even reproduce that), but then over time, it fails to print.

I've tried Lucid and printing works flawlessly, however at the expense of an application that seems to only work in 4.3.1 (I'll post this issue elsewhere).

Cheers.

Lucid solved my printing issue so I simply stuck with Lucid. However, several of the web browsers had scrolling issues running in Lucid. I ended up with Chromium and it works well.

Using the tool in Lucid, it also seemed easier to to load Openoffice. However, I tried using the ATAN function in the spreadsheet yesterday and it did not work. It offered the function but the result was just the initial number. I'm wondering if there is an additional step to get all of the trig functions. I guess that is something to look into.

I had the same problem with my HPf4580, Puppy 4.20.

Although i removed the folders suggested (/var/cups, /var/spool/cups, /var/run/cups, /var/cache/cups, /var/log/cups), i was still not able to print, getting the same error:

Unable to open file /var/spool/cups/dXXX-XXX: Permission denied.

I noticed from /var/log/cups/error_log that it had something to do with the filter pstops.

Code: Select all

PID 18713 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops) stopped with status 1!
The solution was to change the permissions of the filters:

Code: Select all

cd /usr/lib/cups/filter
chmod ug+s pstops
chmod ug+s foomatic-rip
[/code]

Here is something that we have learned about Puppy and CUPS. Certain alien packages, like debs or sfs files made from debs, have invalid permissions and ownerships. When installed, they alter the Puppy filesystem and cause CUPS to fail.

This might explain why CUPS would initially work for mcman56, then eventually quit. It might also explain why your use of the "-s" option would repair the problem.

Thanks.
