I personally would love to have puppy compatible with PCs having trident cyberblade video cards, for using an SVideo Out without workarounds

Alright, there is a wishlist in the first post. sc0ttman, can you give more details about the xvesa thing?

By the way, I don't like Quickpet myself. Puppy still relies on a browser to display the help page, so even if I put the browser choice thing, I'll have to get good PETs for 4.x and the size will go up.

I want this to be more generic, more like a bug-fixed release, rather than an improvement over 4.3.1.

DaveS: I'll try the Quirky Rox and JWM. I like your attitude :)

All these .pets play nicely. They replace power manager icon, blinky, and add a temp icon. All configurable.

A user of Puppy Arcade reported to me that in 4.2 and 4.3, when using Xvesa, the "UP" key always made mtpaintsnapshot.sh run, taking a screenshot of the screen..

This is especially annoying when trying to play games!

So, I edited jwm-personal, jwmrc and the jwm menu template file in "/etc/xdg/..." and removed all references to mtpaintsnapshot in my next puplet, but I could simply have just changed the key instead..

Fair enough, I think it'll turn out very nicely! :D

EDIT

Here's the control panel I use..

It was made by GrumpyWolfe, but I added more apps, and cleaned it up a bit..
It will require editing (probably).. You may like it, or not..

Ah, I see that you must be using the "standard" puppy 2.6.25.16 kernel... it freezes at boot-up unless I remember to remove my extra storage first (a 32GB SDHC card that supplements my standard 16GB hard drive).

I've often found myself as an interested spectator in the battle between the kernels....

You see, kernel 2.6.30.5 (as in 4.3.x) does not hang at "Waiting for modules to complete loading... usb_" when my SDHC card is installed. But 4.3's kernel is not recommended for the proprietary broadcom 2.6.25.16 wl.ko .pet that tempestuous made.

jrb solved this by doing a fairly extensive surgery on Puppy 431, but if we were to have an Iguleder's improved 431, 2 or whatever, it would be nice not to be faced with the choice of no broadcom wireless or no smooth bootability.

Would it be possible to compile your 2.6.25.16 kernel with kernel 2.6.30.5's ability to boot smoothly with the extra memory card installed?

@Iguleder

Your flavors of puppy 4.* look very interesting to me but before downloading on my dialup at the best 5.4 Kbs I must ask.
Which flavors still have Lucent PCI winmodem support? the retro? the retro-retro?
And with that asked. Are you going to check out Barry's new 2.6.27.47: retro kernel that might keep most of the cutting edge people happy without leaving us old analog dialup people in the dust.

Well ... I don't really know what kernel is best for PCI, but I do know that if you ever used Puppy 3.x or 4.x, you should go for retro-retro. If you used 4.1.x and 4.2.x and it worked, go for retro.

I guess it's an old computer if you've got PCI ... so retro-retro? :?

EDIT: forgot to mention, all the flavors have all the drivers included. I mean, it's the "full" thing, unlike pup-431-small.iso Barry released. And yes, the analog modem drivers are in.

I am running on puppy 4.2.1
Nothing has worked with anything above this point!!!!!!
I think Barry knows this and this is the reason for him recompiling a new/old kernel.
DON'T under estimated that old boy!

glenco, the "drivers" come with the kernel. If you use Puppy x.y.z and a.b.c and they have the same kernel, they should support the same hardware. The only thing that does change dramatically is Xorg and its video device support.

Also, I'm working on an improved 2.6.27.47 as Barry does. I'm trying to make it work with ext4 ... if it goes on well, maybe I'll make only one flavor with that kernel. It should fit percisely between 2.6.30.5 and 2.6.25.16 and support pretty much any computer. I'll try to add analog modem drivers and all the cool stuff Barry adds to kernels to spice 'em up.

Should be a fun kernel, if I manage to do this. Just imagine ... perfect support for old hardware but with SFS4 and ext4. Cool thing

Pidgin

#51 Post by tlchost »

I installed Pidgin2.6.6, which I have used with no problems in other puppies. With Forever, the system locks up at times and/or quits Pidgin at random. Hope there's a fix.

Puppy 4.x Forever!

#52 Post by Hugh »

I've downloaded both of your 4.x-Retro versions
and am using Retro now, frugally. It has performed
well for the past 10 days.

I've also tried your Retro-Retro version but am
unable to get a successful boot-up. It goes so
far and reports that it is unable to find the file:
pup-432.sfs,

Wondering what might be the trouble, I booted
up into 3.01 to examine the two .sfs files. The
Retro file 'mounted' properly and I was able to
explore its contents.

The Retro-Retro .sfs file is 'un-mountable' for some
reason and seems to be defective. I downloaded
again from your Download Link and got the
same result.

Could you possibly check the integrity of your
Retro-Retro .iso please to assure that all is
well?

Many thanks!

Ed. for spelling

Try booting from ext2/3 ... the retro ones won't read ext4. By the way, is the MD5 correct?

tlchost: try to start Pidgin through the console ... it works fine for me. See if anything exotic appears when it crashes.

Puppy 4.x Retro Retro .iso

#56 Post by Hugh »

By the way, is the MD5 correct?

Yes, MD5 exactly the same as provided in your .txt file.

After extracting contents from the two .iso files:

When attempting to mount the Retro-Retro.sfs
file with the file manager, in order to test its integrity,
the mount fails.

However, mounting of the Retro version .sfs file is
accomplished successfully, and this version boots
properly as well.

It therefore seems that the Retro Retro .sfs file is
somehow corrupted.

Would you be able to verify please? Or anyone else
who has attempted to use the Retro-Retro version?

Many thanks for your assistance.

I've been running both the 2.6.30.5 and the 2.6.25.16 versions live but I hadn't tried retro-retro yet.Just downloaded and burned the 2.6.21.7 version and posting from it now, running live. Booted no problem. :)

No other pup-432.sfs files on this computer either, booted from the cd.

Good to hear it works.

Sorry for not testing this myself, my hard drive got messed up and I had to format it completely, so I lost all my Puppy materials.

Also lost my FTP passwords for some servers, so my Puppy life isn't very easy these days :)

I wait for Barry to upload Woof, I want to do another round of snapshots, I want to try to recompile 2.6.25.16 and 2.6.21.7 with my SFS4 patch so it supports SFS4 out of the box, no need to convert SFS4 to SFS3 anymore :D
