I use GnuCash for my personal finances.

I started trying to compile it under Puppy but found that it has too many dependencies. I didn't pursue it further as I have it running under Fedora without a problem.

I haven't seen any post anouncing a GnuCash dotpup.

Acccounting software

#4 Post by 307 »

Linux needs a reasonable accounting application which ( for simplicity ) should emulate Quickbooks, and enable the user to run a small medium enterprise, with VAT ( or local tax ) recording and P&L, Trial Balance etc reports.
I havent used GnuCash in any capacity ( too little time to learn another method ) but reckon the accounting suite will convince a load of SMEs to use Linux on the desktop.

I've never used Quickbooks but I was a Quicken user before moving to GnuCash.

I don't subscribe to the line of reasoning that says that something has to work as something else to be successfull.

GnuCash's interface is quite usable, I would say better than the version of Quicken I was using. It does not have 100% the functionality of Quicken, but It just happens to be the part that I didn't use.

I know that you are already used to that interface but I am sure you werent used to it before. Actually, I bet that the interface has changed substantially since the first version of Quickbooks and If you have used it for a long time, I bet that you have adapted.

I know of people that eats the same sandwich for lunch their whole life and that's OK with me if that works for them. I just think that being limited to a tool just because It's what you know is quite limiting.

Gnu Cash interface

You're absolutely correct - I just prefer the Quickbooks interface as I am familiar with it. Humans are creatures of habit - I guess I am now getting either too habitual or too human.... !! B-)

What I like about the Quickbooks application is that you are only making ONE transaction entry, the process of completing that entry makes the correct double entry to the appropriate account. And its summary reports are useful when presenting the plea to the bank manager.....B-)

Here in the UK the Value Added Tax of 17.5% has to be added to every transaction ( as a small business ) and the monthly or quarterly VAT return has to be sent to Customs & Excise. A decent accounting program would have the option of a VAT return summary report.

I'll take a look at GnuCash on the Pup and see what progress we can make.

best regards

Had a look at the Tax Calc - so thats WX Basic...... it must be 20 years since I saw lines of Basic code.

Around about 1983/84 I wrote a simple invoicing program in BBC Basic which produced invoices and tracked the VAT amount and was "useful". THe BBC "B" was the schools computer at the time and it started a lot of people off in the IT inductry.

I went on to lecture (i.e. caretake) mature students for 5 years after my stint at programming, and from there into the world of work and enterprise and self-employment etc etc.

Oh my how the years have flown, just like the kids and my hair !!! :D

GnuCash

Had a look at GnuCash - project seems to have stopped.
Creating transactions like an invoice for example seems to be a tad long winded, according to the website help.
First rule of software writing - make the interface simple.....
