Puppy 4 Forever (Puppy 4.x snapshot, 3 kernels)

#1 Post by Iguleder »

Here's another 4.x snapshot, which as all the new funky stuff from Woof. It's same as Puppy 4.3.1, but has many bug fixes and cool new stuff, like a new pmusic, the local time/UTC selection thing and a new network wizard.

The version number is 4.3.2, because I had no choice ... 4.3.1 is 4.3.1 and all other numbers just don't make any sense

Comes in 3 flavors:
- One with kernel 2.6.30.5 (as in 4.3.x)
- Retro, 2.6.25.16 (as in 4.1.x and 4.2.x)
- Retro-retro, 2.6.21.7 (as in 3.x and 4.1.x, great for old hardware)

They come with all kernel modules, so you get the maximal hardware support possible with each Puppy kernel. Basically, the 2.6.21.7 should have 4.x/4.1.x's compatibility, the 2.6.25.16 flavor should have 4.2.x's compatibility and the 2.6.30.5 should have 4.3.x's compatibility.

All look exactly like Puppy 4.3.1 (icons, GTK theme, JWM theme) and include some fixes I added (no shadow for desktop icon labels, SFS converter icon) to Woof.

Xvesa works, everything works as in 4.3.1. And yes, you2pup works too. Some stuff are slightly updated from their versions in 4.3.1, as I said. You won't notice any big difference. No surprises or new stuff.

Oh, forgot two things - it comes without the Flashblock and user agent switching addons for Seamonkey, they're gone from the Puppy repo for some reason. Also, it includes Flash 10 instead of 4.3.1's 9, so things should work well.

Bottom line: stable, compatible and good as Puppy 4.3.1. :)

Downloads here:
http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/dima/puppy4forever/

You'll find the ISOs and the devx in SFS4. You can easily convert it to SFS3 if you need. :)

If you wonder where the name comes from, it's because I'm sure 4.x will be nostalgic as Mario ... and you know, four-four ... :)

Wishlist for next snapshot:
- Clean unmount on shutdown
- The optional saves thing
- Fixed version of the remaster tool
- Fix for the ROX focus bug
- New JWM
- More MIME-types
- Default applications wizard
- Ummm ... some control panel, anyone?

retro-retro is a very good idea, you are a wise man

if anyone will convert sfs4 to sfs3, I recommend to use, for conversion, sfs v 3.0 version, downloadable here:

http://filebox.me/view/b1wp96p1a

replacing mksquashfs3 in /usr/sbin/ (in Puppy 4.3.xx) since conversion script uses mksquashfs3 to convert sfs4 to sfs3

mksquashfs3 provided in puppy, makes sfs v 3.1, that is not good

according my

*sfs compatibility chart*
- http://dokupuppylinux.co.cc/sfs_modules ... lity_chart

sfs v 3.0 is universally retro-compatible with Puppy 3.01-4.2.xx series, (while v 3.1 cannot be read by Puppy 3.01) and Puppy 4.3.xx with retro kernel
replace .co.cc with .info to get access to stuff I posted in forum

Puppy 3.x users won't need this devx anyway, so SFS 3.1 is just fine.

@ DaveS- flashy screen bug? Please describe. (I get a problem with dpup and Lupu where the screen tears into horizontal strips when I scroll Firefox or Seamonkey too fast using the mouse and scrollbar. Is that it?)

As I said, it's almost same as 4.3.1 ... all the 4.3.1 bugs are still there, mostly. The only difference is some Puppy in-house stuff updated and improvements to the Puppy scripts, like the init scripts, the save thing, the first boot wizard and so on.

No Gerry......... in this bug, the whole screen flashes as if turned off and on again very quickly.
The Rox focus bug is serious. With this, suppose you right click on a file and select 'rename'. Proceed with the renaming as normal, no problem. If you then select another file with right click and select 'delete', the file you just re-named will be deleted unless you click on the background of the rox window to de-select it first. This is potentially catastrophic.
Neither of these bugs exist in 4.3.
I have experienced the bug you describe when using Midori, but never found a cure. Two steps forward, one back? :) :)

In my case, I am using Puppy 4.3.1 scsi that was a test version by Barry that did not make it to prime time.
I have did a bunch of bug fixes on it and also updates.
I still have the original ISO file for it, but with all the Puppy versions out there, I can not see any sense in throwing yet another Puppy 431 version into the wild.
Am I being selfish?
Maybe...
With the modifications and updates I have made, I would probably have to do a remaster to get it all included in an ISO.
And the only remaster I have ever done back on Puppy 3.01 that ended up as a 300+ megabyte ISO!

Of course you could offer to share them with someone who has produced an updated version of 431. Let them decide if they want them. Another approach might be to make sfs files available....then everyone can roll their own version.

Don't have either problem running xvesa on a bootable USB drive.

I have read about these two bugs on the forum and it seems to be an xorg/gtk thing.

OK Gerry, I have been able to reproduce the scroll bug like you describe here. I have two versions of Lupu installed, one is fine, the other behaves as you describe. Its bloody awful, like I only have 56k of video ram or something. All I have to do is figure out what I did between these installs, but I am putting my money on the wrong video driver :)

Size matters.
I would not want to make a big ISO that took 30 minutes to boot as the one I made from 301 did.
Also, I did a lot of manual mods that I did not keep track of.
So it would be remaking the ISO from scratch.
And now with vegetation going wild on my property and driveway, I have to get away from the PC to take care of it.
This is Oregon where the vegetation grows 6 inches overnight!
At least it seems to.

Another thing is those who don't what to ask aspeacialy can donwload it and have a look, without thnking about that. Infact I might have a look at it, though I doubt I will understand a thing but never mined that. I can lean to understand ! Hopfully that was a better post!

Selective Save

#19 Post by tlchost »

I'm looking for a way to change rc.shutdown to allow me to choose whether or not I want the save file written.

I make enough mistakes installing pets that I'd rather be able to abort the save, rather than use the power switch.

I run Puppy on a bootable USB drive.

Thanks in advance.
