Good job! I did a frugal install on my usb stick and gave it a try. I am very impressed with kde (I never used kde much) and how well puppy package manager works with the debian repos. I can't wait to do some customizing!

One problem though, I tried doing a frugal install on my girlfriends Dell xps m140 (which is running puppy 4.3.1 at the moment) but when booting I get:

Code: Select all

kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(8,18)
The message comes immediately after booting from grub, before any of the normal startup messages ("loading drivers", "copying to ram", etc)

I'm not sure what the problem is. The sfs, initrd, and vmlinuz are in /kdepup on partition 3. the puppy 4.3.1 files are in / on partition 3. Do you think 4.3.1 is conflicting with kdpup? Here is a section from menu.list

Code: Select all

  title Puppy Linux 4.3
  root (hd0,2)
  kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda4
  initrd /initrd.gz pmedia=idehd

  title KDEPUP
  root (hd0,2)
  kernel /kdepup/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda4
  append initrd=/kdepup/initrd.gz pmedia=idehd

Anyone see anything that would cause a problem? All of the md5sums check out ok.
Grub, (hd0,2) would have to go with /dev/sda3, if that is where the
partition is.

I don't understand having the 2 puppys on the same partition, or why
the KDEPUP syntax is so different than 4.3.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Try:

Code: Select all

title KDEPUP
  root (hd0,2)
  kernel /kdepup/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psubdir=kdepup
   initrd /kdepup/initrd.gz

I can't wait to try this one, I've been wondering if there was a puppy with KDE and what do you know, there's one on the first page of the Puppy Derivatives section

I like the fact its KDE 3.5 too..I've generally only used 4x lately and while its fairly cool.. lots of bugs and instability from what I've found. I've heard a lot of people prefer the older and faster 3.5 and it still looks pretty nice from what I can tell.

Yea I did it in a hurry, just copied the dir from my flash drive into the existing partition. I may go back and make a separate partition if things work out.

  root (hd0,2)
  kernel /kdepup/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psubdir=kdepup
   initrd /kdepup/initrd.gz
That did the trick, thanks.

Now I'm having a new problem, trying to load xorg or xvesa results in a black screen. The laptop has a 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML chipset which works with 4.3.1. I'm not sure if there are missing drivers or something, I will do some searching.

You could drag one of the scripts in usr/bin to the desktop (symlink it):

wmexit
wmpoweroff
wmreboot

or drag shutdown to the desktop, that's the dpup shutdown window.

Problem solved :D dragged shutdown to (linked ) to desktop now i get the DPup shutdown Window Thanks again for the help :D

KDPUP = KDE 3.5.10 + dpup 484 beta 4

Dejan:

I installed tunapie in your kdpup484, first I updated the repositories in puppy package manager (that took quite a while) the exited ppm and restarted it.It installed tunapie with all the dependencies, then I exited ppm.I tried to run tunapie but it wouldn't start so I installed the dpup-devx-484.sfs and it worked.
The default video player in tunapie is set to vlc and the video played but no sound so I changed the default video player to mplayer and it works perfect.
I'm attaching a screenshot.

KDPup logout

#48 Post by shark1 »

KDPup is great - a fast KDE desktop and with the addition of OpenOffice it has everything I need.

To get the Kmenu/Logout to work I have created a directory called /root/.kde/shutdown and then coped the jwmshutdown script into that directory.

When you logout there is a short delay but the shutdown/reboot script will then execute.

Kdpup is working great for me, I didn't think I'd be able to play games like nexuiz and openarena in puppy but they both work in Kdpup.I installed them from the debian repos in ppm. They are older versions, nexuiz 4.2 and openarena 0.7.7 but still lots of fun to play.
My printer works too! I also downloaded openoffice from debian repos, version 2.4.1.

I have a full install of Kdpup on three computers.

pc 1 = Compac Presario S6700NX
1.5 GB ram, p4 2.8 with ht
radeon 9200 agp graphics card
pc 2 = Hp Pavilion a810n
1.5 GB ram, athlon 64 3300+
radeon 9250 agp graphics card
pc 3 = Hp Pavilion a6220n
4 GB ram, Core 2 Duo E4500
Intel GMA 3100

Ktorrent

#51 Post by shark1 »

found that Ktorrent (the Rolls-Royce of bittorrents) would not work but that Transmission did work so there was not a firewall problem or similar.

The problem was with the permissions for /root/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/. Changed that and Ktorrent works.

Silly question, how do you install pets? I have a number of pets downloaded but when i click on them I get Ark. I guess I am spoiled with just clicking on a pet and having it installed in the appropriate location. This reminds me of the old days when the big question with Linux was how do I and where do I install a program. :?

This pup certainly runs quickly and has lots of things to amuse me.

Thanks for the hard work. :D

@ fishy what shark1 said, you can also check "Remember association for this type" so it will be remembered next time you can just click on it

@tubeguy, yes use dpup's devx, since kdpup's base is dpup, I don't have my own.

kdpup is great

#57 Post by gnz11 »

got kdpup up and running again today.

on p4302/ 1g ram and dsl is smooth.

on home rig, p4 2.4mzh/512 w/1g swap it runs nice but dailup slows some things.

I have been using dpup for 6 months. kdpup looks like a good addition to the community for those who want kde and since it fixes the IM problems for the moment.

very nice work dejan.

Startmount

#59 Post by shark1 »

Startmount doesn't seem to work - selected drives are not mounted on restart.

Any Suggestions?

Hmm, I haven't used that, I usually make script to mount drives and put it in startup folder, but I will check it out later.
