Subject description: no nvidia fx5200 agp support for lupu-500 new puppy 5

Ok i got the new puppy linux 5 lupu official thingy installed and i have tried the quickpet driver for nvidia cards and it doesnt work, ive tried the nvidia drivers from the nvidia site and i have devx.sfs installed but it says i need gcc version 4.4 not the 4.3 i have. cant find anything to help me in ubuntu repos or puppy repos

this card works perfect with puppy 4.2 and the .pet from this url:
http://www.thepussycatforest.info/linux/NVIDIA-71.86.06-k2.6.25.16.pet

i also for the life of me cannot at all get this card to work in lucid 10.4 either, all previous versions of ubuntu worked.

the 71. series nvidia drivers seem to be dropped from the ubuntu line

puppy linux saved me having to upgrade my computer coz windows was getting to be a pig, im not going to buy a different vid card because it defeats the purpose. Puppy 4.2 rules.

sickgut@gmail.com

also im always on the irc chatroom that chatx defaults too

please help me!!

Strange, works perfectly for my nvidia card. Did you follow the installation instructions precisely? What do you get in a console with the code report-video?

I have listed the result of report-video
the below is what is listed when i can actually boot into the windows system, its using the vesa driver. After i run nvidia-xconfig or whatever that command is the driver changes to something like Card0Driver or something, i can only get this reading when im out of the windows system as my windows system just simply does not boot with it like that. I have tried replacing my xorg.conf file with a working one from my puppy 4.2 but it also just crashes out and i cannot bring up the windows system. I have to run xorgwizard again and it selects all the standard stuff without the driver so i can boot into the windows system again. This is after installing the driver from the quickpet thing.

Note that the nvidia site doesnt list the fx5200 as suitable for this driver so its not going to work with the quick pet one but there isnt any other driver available that will install it seems.

Mine is an 8400

Try Shutdown > Exit to prompt

Then xorgwizard > probe

That should load the nv driver which should work. xwin should get you back to the desktop then try report-video to check your driver.

If this doesn't work catdude has compiled some older drivers for wary that uses the same kernel as Lucid puppy which may work, see this post.

You may have better results with quirky (qrky-110) or Quirky-Retro (qret-110) (older 2.6.30.5 kernel) which you can get at http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/quirky/quirky-1.1/

OK here is what i have done:

Ive tried the quickpet nvidia driver = doesnt work, that driver does not support the card, nvidia websites says so, wrong driver. Yes i have tried using xorgwizard and probe and all the depmod modprobe nvidia stuff and tried setting to nv and nvidia driver in xorg.conf and also an xorg conf from my puppy 4.2 that works, no go.

Ive tried the .pet files here
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54886

ive used nvidia-xconfig and dicked around with the xorg.conf file as much as humanly possible

ive got the devx.sfs and kernel2.6.3.22-patched.sfs thing and tried the nvidia drivers from the nvidia site, compiling and stuff and still no go.
ive tried cd /usr/src/linux-<kernel number> then make prepare (as suggested on barries site and this enabled me to install the nvidia driver
but with errors.

Either i can get it to boot into x11 with the vesa driver or when anything else is specified then i get a message loading xorg in /etc/x11/xorg.conf whatever starting ..... etc then screen goes blank for a second then im back to the console with the loading text dispayed and 15 secs later it says its failed and boots me out to console and i need to run xorgwizard again to get it to boot into x11 again

all i want is a propper pet for my fx5200, the one in quickpet is setup right it seems but it is not compatible for my card, it is for later models, mine is a model from 2005 and i need the 71. or 173. driver versions not the 195. type.

i know the video card hardware is fine coz it runs perfectly on puppy 4.2, all i need is a pet like this one that works on puppy 4.2 but for the newer kernel i cant find one:
http://www.thepussycatforest.info/linux/NVIDIA-71.86.06-k2.6.25.16.pet

its a 71. series driver

it is said that the nvidia .pets from wary and quirky arent compatible with puppy 5 because of how the glib thing is set up in puppy 5, as i have read on barrys site.

if someone out there has got an FX5200/ fx5700 or something similar working with ubuntu lucid 10.4 or puppy 5 then please let me know

As you can see from my sig, i use an FX5200 and have put together a .pet for Lupu500

I spent most of yesterday putting this together, normally i would use one of gray's NVIDIA .pets as a template,
but in Lupu things are in different locations and it made it just a bit more tricky than it would normally have been.

So if you would like to TEST it, please make a backup of your current install first,
or better still test it in a fresh install.

During my tests (about 12 of them) it appears that Lupu does not use Xorg by default (the xorg.conf has no mention of a driver)

So what i did was, bootup Lupu500 using pfix=ram
Close the First Run Configuration and then reboot creating a save file in the process.
Bootup using the new save file and then install the .pet and then Exit to prompt (NOT restart X server),
at the prompt, run xorgwizard choose keyboard and then select Probe and screen res.
Click OK then type xwin and hit Enter.

You should then be using the nvidia driver,
to check if this is the case, go to: Menu > System > System Status and Config > NVIDIA X Server Settings
hopefully everything is OK.

Some Notes:
The .pet includes the following directory: /usr/local/libGL-originals/
    which contains the following symlinks:
      libGL.so -> ../usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1.2
      libGL.so.1 -> ../usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1.2
      libGL.so.1.2 -> ../usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1.2

These are copies of the original files that already exist in the /lib directory in Lupu500,
and i include them as a precaution in case of any problems when they get replaced by symlinks to the NVIDIA files.

I found that the NVIDIA driver would still work with those files mentioned above,
but Direct Rendering was not available, that is why i replaced them.

If you ever decided to uninstall the .pet (via the package manager), the original files will be restored.

Anyway, if you try it, i hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

CatDude, I got here via wellminded search.
I'm getting a 'new' Intel mainboard D865GBF, and hope to use much of the components from the Dell 8300.
The card says Nvidia p162, awhich apparently is a FX 5200?

If/when I get the "new" system running, I'll try your pet.

Thanks a lot!!
