Something a bit serious is going on wit the icon bug.

I disabled the 'filthy fix' and made a save, sure enough the icon positions were distorted, the cd icon next to the floppy icon.

I will attach a screenshot that shows I have an ntfs partition! Now I deleted windows and reformatted my harddrive nearly 2 years ago. No chance that it could be ntfs! But the weirder thing is on the mousover of that icon I get the true reading of the drive and size. but more :? :? .Hmm..

I'm sure Beem's bug with no sizes is related. All the action occurs in a script /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d . Another weird thing is the Y axis postion reported for a couple of my icons.. over 900, but hang on, my screen is only 1360x768.., minus a bit for the jwm tray.

Perhaps the only thing I can do is extend the 'fix' so that it works when a major event takes place, like if an sfs is loaded or unloaded, or a new window manager added. I can detect the changes being made in the scripts in /etc/rc.d and /etc/windowmanager . It's kind of a work-around-around, which really, is unsatisfactory but possibly acceptable.

Cheers

lupu-114

1. Installed skype-2.0.0.72 and ran it, and the following error was displayed:
/usr/bin/skype: line 3: ./skype: input/output error

2. Restored copy of lupusave file made just prior to the installation of skype, so skype is now no longer an included package.

3. How best to upgrade lupu-114 to lupu-115?
Will this use the lupu-114 lupusave file?

It would make interesting reading to look at the statistics regarding which browser gets downloaded the most via Lupu's browser installer system.

Would it be possible to implement a counter on the server from which these browser pets get downloaded?
Life is too short to spend it in front of a computer

Sylvander..

Probably better to use the sfs I made, a later version, but if you don't want to use an sfs there is a sfs2pet program around somewhere, sorry not to be of more help.

In short, no! Simply because in "preferences" in Quickpet you can change the repo you download from.. I use one of the 2 Australian mirrors included and get a browser in 10 seconds!

1. Used the instructions here to manually install skype-2.1.0.81 = Static binary tar.bz2 with Qt
[This link will probably take 3 attempts to display properly]
Was [almost] easy to do and works just fine. :D 8)
(a) Initially downloded the tar.bz2 file to /00 [my download folder at the top of the file hierarchy].
(b) [After a couple of false starts..] Extracted to /root/my-applications, which worked fine, because it automatically makes its own folder in there named skype_static-2.1.0.81.
(c) The instruction to extract to /root/my-applications/skype is an error in my opinion.
Am I right or wrong?

Sorry 01micko, I typed this as you typed yours, and you got in 1st.
I guess I'll stick with what I did 2nd time around since it works.
I'd wanted to try using SFS files, but not yet ready to do that; still trying to understand it, and how to apply.
e.g. My "Home" partitions on various Flash Drives [2-off=1GB, 4GB, 8GB] don't have any spare room as presently partitioned.

I maybe should not have downloaded that skype while not having a save file created yet.

Wrong version for Quirky 100 it told me. I try later today now I will test L115 and tell result within some 5 minutes.
Took longer. Fail to get nvidia going. Omelette taks 10 sec instead of 5.

Graphics split up the screen in hundreds of lines when I scroll fast.
Streaming CNN video are jerky and choppy.

Radio local here sr.se I fail to get going. What pet does one need to install for that?

I love the quickpet choice thing sadly it is not in quirky that works with graphics and SNS for me.

Could one import the quickpet choice in Quirky?

I go back to Q1 now. Tell me how to get choice of browser through quickpet in that one too! :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Nooby, I think the thing to do would be to ask 01micko to package up a pet. It should be easily doable, but he would know. But as a favor, please do not expect it until after Lucid Pup is released. ;-) Thanks.

Thanks playdays!

Do you by any chance remember how we repaired both Puppy431std and all the quirkies and lupies by changing a line of text in some file using CLI
it had to do with Simple Network Setup and it repaired that one lose connection with internet each thirty minutes or so.

What search word could help me find those posts? That way I could use Lupu

and another thing. Which media player plugin is suppose to work with radio?

Q1 works with radio when I did gxine in PPM while Lupu doesn't have gxine

Here is my contribution to the "drive icon issue." I have been running around the house booting all 5 of my test computers with 115 on CD. Every time, the icons are in good order when the machine boots directly to the desktop. I am using pfix=ram on all tests. Anyone who tests should do that, because we do not care about updating at this time--just 115 on its own without anything that might be an artifact of a previous version. The icons are in good order even when the resolution needs to be changed. OK. If I use the "Keyboard and Video Resolution Setter" to change resolution then when I get back to the desktop the resolution is what I want, but the icons are on top of each other.

That ought to be a good clue--what is different? Unfortunately from the debugging standpoint, there is a lot different.

Let us keep perspective. If my findings are right then the icons will be good on first boot for everyone. Plus, there is no question of data loss here. It is purely fit and finish. We have two more versions, at least, so with our combined brain power......we ought to be able to make a big mess of things.

But thank goodness we have such an interesting bug. I was afraid we would not have anything left that Barry might find to be worth his time.

I put everything but the Out house sink on this one.

1. Abiword still prints a black box instead of a photo when printing to CUP-PDF. See attached desktop photo which compares file created with dpup484 and lupu115.
2. Unable to install esword with the wine provided in "Popular pets". Did not try it with anything else.
Jim1911

Abiword--pdf--black boxes might be one we let slide, since Print to File will print a good pdf page. And I think 8-bit said that Cups_pdf works in some circumstances.

Wine. I just uploaded wine 1.1.43 by green_dome from the forum as one of the Quickpet programs--it should show up in 116 Friday. it has a lot of extras to contribute to usability. I hope it works for esword.

Oh and Jim, you have the icon misplacement right? is that when you boot first time pfix=ram directly to a desktop, or is it after you change the resolution? Thanks.

A distinct icon for scsi drives would be nice

#632 Post by Sit Heel Speak »

A distinct icon for genuine scsi drives would be nice. For example, this is Lupu-008 (113 looks identical, except I have not yet given it the desktop icons for Opera and Geany):

http://i44.tinypic.com/207n89g.jpg

and this is Lupu-008 with the kernel recompiled to include scsi support:

http://i39.tinypic.com/b6vy9c.jpg

The latter shows my four scsi drives all right, but misrepresents them as usb drives.

SHS, I hope we can experiment with that kernel as soon as we get LP out the door. We could offer it as a straight replacement couldn't we, as a pet?

CUPS-PDF prints text fine, just fails on graphics. OpenOffice using CUPS-PDF to print to a file rather than a printer has the same problem with graphics. I doubt that many users will be affected by leaving that bug in for the time being.

Green-dome's wine pet is a good choice.

As you've indicated, the drive icons are fine on initial auto boot. On my system, after a save file is created, and changes are made (ie. sfs added) to bootup is when they will misalign. Then it's a matter of using the erase/redraw tick box in the drive icons manager then restartX to correct the alignment.

Great job clearing so many problems this quickly.

Maybe, maybe not. There are issues to be solved before this kernel is ready for canine consumption. scsi support isn't all I gave it, I also made it realtime preemption and switched-on the OLPC support.

Also it was not compiled using the same gcc as Barry compiled it with, rather I compiled it using the Ubuntu 4.4.3 gcc (in other words, I compiled it on Lucid-008 using its own devx).

The benefit of compiling the kernel with the Lucid devx, and then turning it into a .pet, and then woof-building a Lucid around that, is that the resulting Lucid can then compile the nVidia drivers without resorting to any tricks beyond 'make prepare'.

The unbenefit, which may or may not stem from either the rt preemption or the gcc version or both, is that some Puppy mainstays refuse to work with this kernel, most notably PNethood. I am sleuthing this.

Also, like all other 2.6.33.2 Puppy kernels, it does not drive my sound card, as reported here.

Before you jump the gun, on cups, try this.
Go to any site on the internet that has some graphics.
Select print page from the browser menu.
Select CUPSPDF as the printer.
After it asks for a fliename and prints open the created file.
The graphics will be fine in the created PDF file.
At least, that worked as to making a pdf from an internet page.
Why does it bomb on a user created PDF file that has graphics?
I honestly do not know.

Thank you all for this wonderful puppy.

Lupu115: started from CD intoRAM

1) It finds the right video settings and started with a graphical desktop. But when I change the keyboard layout with xorgwizard the probe fails and I must select the resolution manually. It could be difficult for an unexperienced user.

2) When I try to innstall the browser I must connect to the internet first. The connect wizard could be also to complicated for an unexperienced user. SNS works. Is it possible to setup the internet connection automatically like Ubuntu (and others) can do it ?

The problem described here (not being able to move the window with ALT-left button) is solved.

Tried this and it printed the pdf perfectly including graphics, weird, that it can't do the same for a doc file. Incidentally, that's a great way to print from a web page.

Lucid 115 Desktop drive icon misalignment and size info.

#640 Post by Béèm »

I have size 0GB and misalignment problems passing through 3 stages.
See the pictures.
1 - icons aligned after boot with pfix=ram and size correctly indicated.
2 - icons aligned but size 0GB after running Desktop drive icon manager to redraw.
3 - icons misaligned after a boot when with sfs selected by bootmanager (so with a save file)

Correction, the last picture is indeed from Lucid 115 and not from Lucid 113 as the file name indicates.
