christmt,
I see you made a separate post about your problem -

It is Alfa AWUS036E
So to be clear about this subject, your device obviously works under Puppy 4.3.1, but with inconsistent success.

You need to be aware that with Linux, kernel modules (drivers) are generally officially sanctioned by the kernel developers, and only rarely are there alternative versions available.

I see from a Google search that your Alfa wifi device contains the Realtek RTL8187L chipset, so your kernel module will be the rtl8187.
Unfortunately for you, this driver is known to be less than solid.

You could try the latest Puppy alpha versions; Quirky and Lupu. These have a more recent kernel with more recent rtl8187 module.

It sounds like scanning is the main problem.
You could bypass the Network Wizard and try scanning manually, from the commandline. Do this -

Code: Select all

iwlist wlan0 scan
Once you know what access points are available, you can enter these into the Network Wizard.

Of course, if you regularly connect to the same wifi access point, this shouldn't be a problem: you will be connecting with known wifi parameters, and there's no need to scan.
