Now - Arora 0.4 Complete - One 10 MB pet - Webkit browser

#1 Post by playdayz »

This is very old and out of date. There seems to be some new stuff at the end of the thread. Thanks.

This is Arora 0.4, a small qt4/webkit-based browser. Because of some clever work by esmourguit it is now available as one 10MB pet. That is complete - nothing else required. It has been tested in Puppy 4.1 beta, 4.07, 4.00, 3.02, and 3.01. The expanded size is 24 MB, which is in the ballpark of seamonkey, opera, and, firefox.

Javascript is working, but plugins are not. Plugins are scheduled to work when Qt 4.5 is released.

You know, I had been looking at Arora and debating whether or not to compile and try it. Since you've already done all the hard work, I think I'll go ahead and give it a go. Downloading now.

I didn't compile it Sir D--i was just playing around and grabbed one of the featured downloads--the deb file for ubuntu 8.04 and made a pet.

I have just noticed two things. On the arora site it says "flash is avilable if compiled against the webkit trunk" and in the preferences there are checkboxes to enale plugins (which are enabled). However, I just went to a flash site and nothing--but I might have flash 7 on here. More later.

This is what it says on the screenshots page:

When compiled against WebKit trunk you get support for netscape plugins, including flash and youtube.

Hey Playdayz! :) Thanks buddy for making this! It's wicked-awesome my Puppian Friend!! I saw this in Synaptic last week I think it was when I was doing an update of my Parsix and I thought, "Hmm... another new one? Never heard of it!" Well now! This baby rocks! Fast like "my old browser" I'd made, ya'know? At least this one seems to be for me anyway. I've been having quite a bit of fun with it tonight ever since I downloaded it at any rate. :)

So thanks for the new play toy my good friend! Keep up the great work and let see some more .pets from ya in the future, alrighty? Way to go!

Amicalement/Cheers!

No Images

#8 Post by playdayz »

@esmourgit, Awesome, merci beaucoup, did you compile it, it seems faster, and small. It is not displaying images for me, however. I checked in Edit: Preferences: Privacy and Display Images is checked, so I am puzzled. I removed both qt 4.4.1 and my old pet of arora 0.4 before I installed this one. I will keep playing around to see why no images for me, thanks again, this is great to see, you may have posted a strong contender for the next puppy browser!.

<add>For me it seems to be displaying .png images but not .gif images or .jpg--if I reinstall the qt 4.4.1 pet then the images come back.

Bonjour,
@playdayz
No, i've not compiled it, took your pet package and just added libs.
But seems somethings is missing.
Now added, test if you want, here
Now it is 10084 Kb.
When finishing installing the .pet it says some libs are missing.
When i launched it there is no problems. In case, i made one pet with these missing libs it is lib_sup_arora-0.4.pet

@hogar,
Same answer for you. If you want to try once again?
Cordialement ;)

Yes!

Great work esmourguit, it looks good to me. It runs fast and displays everything. Did you try adding those missing libs to see how big it got and what happened? I know from experience ;-) that many people would be more comfortable if petget did not show any missing dependencies (even if the missing dependencies did not effect the running of the program). I will try later today to add the missing ones to see what happens--I am afraid we might descend into "dependency hell" because the dependencies that are missing come from the libraries you added I think--they were not there before. It is better to have it like this of course--10MB and displaying all graphics. Wonderful! And if we are lucky we can add those few small libraries and be home free. Thank you again.

If you get put the depencies in before I do and everything looks good, I will just redirect to yours in the first message and Puppy users will have a small fast interesting browser! Only about half the size of full browsers--lacking plugins until qt 4.5 which should be reasonably soon!!!

Bonjour,

@playdayz
It is the /usr/plugins directory's i've added to show images, which wants those libs. But i think they are not essential.
The lib_sup_arora-0.4.pet is 3 Mo but expanded it is 8,2 Mo and the arora-0.4.pet is 10 Mo and expanded it is 25 Mo.
I've made one .pet with all libs requiered. It is 13 Mo. arora-0.4_Full-lib.pet
Tell me what is best, after you've tried with all the libs?
Cordialement ;)

9.9 MB - 24 MB expanded - no errors or missing dependencies!

#13 Post by playdayz »

@ esmourguit, We are having some fun now ;-) based on the work you have done and the discoveries you made, i went back to the beginning and using your pets as examples I added each library one by one and then rebuilt the pet and tested, and then did it all again--same thing you have been doing I bet. The result so far is a pet that is 9.9 MB and then 24 M expanded, which gives no dependencies missing when installed and which gives no errors when run from the command line. http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy400/arora-0.4-3.pet

I want to work on it some more this evening. 1) The font in the menus looks bad--I know what to do about that but I want to experiment and see what works best. 2) I did not add as many libraries as you did, so I think there are some things that might not work, in particular the SCIM input methods, so I want to experiment--I know there is at least one Puppyan who prefers that SCIM works. 3) if one goes to /usr/bin and enters "ldd arora" at a terminal, then there are two things that appear to be not present, but give no errors, etc.--I want to investigate that further. (linux-gate and one other towards the bottom)

If you have any time to try it, perhaps you could let me know if you see anything else that should be fixed or if you have any more insights. This collaboration is a pleasure, thanks.

Bonjour,
@playdayz
Tried yours, install the pet without anything sensitive.
Works very fast indeed, even on John Murga's forum.
Just an issue on the Barry's Blog. it shows the title twice, even the photo of the mascott.
A very good Job you've done.

Thanks very much as it works! Now I need to find the latest version of QTWebkit that is stable and works with this version of Arora :wink:! My current version is "libQtWebKit.so.4.5.3".

I have put it into a pet. I have fixed the .desktop file for puppy and added a link to "libQtWebKit.so.4.5.3" (My current installed version from a QT4 pet off the forums.).

I have been using Midori which was compiled for Puppy by Technosauraus. I really like the way it renders pages. Somehow, the webkit browsers seem to work better on my screen than the gheko(?) based ones. MUST give this a try.......................
I tried to build the latest Midori but ran into trouble with webkit. Sh*t its difficult :)
