Since people are already downloading it I may as well announce it. I can add my notes and screenshots soon.

or direct download:

Prior downloads and some software is available here:

The bug tracker is here:
http://code.google.com/p/puppy-development/issues/list

Known issues
MIME Types want to be symlinks now?
Homebank is much larger due to compiling with extra support needed for many banks (required extra libs)
Mhwaveedit was recompiled against a cutdown libsamplerate to save over 1mb (the highest sample rate is not supported)
Conky was unnecessarily compiled against libxcb (needs recompiled without the advanced xorg pet installed)\
Many programs in the 500kb+ range were upx' to save space.
Abiword and Gnumeric have released bugfixed versions and need to be recompiled.
Seamonkey is still at version 1.1.18. Need to compile 1.1.19 for the final release (probably the last Puppy with this series)
Returned to gtk+-2.14 until the bugfixed version of Rox is compiled from CVS (Rox would not unselect files).
This version is missing some of the modem drivers (and some others), but there is a separate zdrv file that has them.
(If there is a working driver available that is not included on the full zdrv let me know & I'll add it)
FYI ... Do not try to build a woof based system on an ntfs partition.
Others that could use an upgrade: flash plugin,...
MAybe add: xvkbd (95kb on screen keyboard)
Possible replacements: ffconvert instead of woo-ff,

This is the first release in a while that has contained all of the drivers on the zdrv,
so although I have created a utility called zdrv cutter to cut its installed size down from 25MB to ~3MB,
I am not including it by default in this release because I don't want it to mask issues with the zdrv itself
(look for it in cutting edge or wait for the first beta)

Reserved for additional notes

My apologies to the first 12 or so testers (the original had a the old glib causing gparted to fail and the firefox-3.6 pet to not work if installed)
I have uploaded a new iso with the correct version - the original sha1 checksum failed (because I uploaded the wrong iso - amazing how that works... glad I checked it though)

Kudos Team,

Hard to believe that this is an Alpha. It's polished, fast, and stable on my hardware. So far everything has worked as expected.

Thanks,
Jim

I've heard various reports to the effect that the next official Puppy release after 4.3.1 is going to be 4.3.2, 4.4, or 5. Is there a way to find out for sure which one of these reports is true? If so, thanks in advance to whoever can let me know!

Since the start, this release has been planned to be 4.4, so it could be kept that way. Or, perhaps to emphasize its "mid" property between 4 and 5, make it 4.5 (I also know that some people are averse to double "4" numbers Smile ).

All are true and being worked on concurrently.

This post on Barry's blog about sums it up:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01480

Ttuuxxx is working on mostly bugfixes and improvements to 4.3.1 = 4.3.2
I am focused on culling out the fat and adding missing functionality to the 4.x base for 4.4
Playdayz is working on the Ubuntu based 5.0
Barry is working toward Quirky 1.0 & Wary Puppy 5.0 based on T2
.... plus an arch, slack, debian, 64bit T2 versions etc... Puppy has become a microcosm of the linux community.

Barry is the gatekeeper and it depends what is available.

4.3.2 may be available next
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=406327#406327

. . . then Puppy 5 (end of April / early May) - a triple whammy release
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy5

4.4 which is looking very solid
may emerge as a 'retro' release
- I see no reason to rush it
or obey any release 'rules'
For example the 2.x from Ttuuxxx
is very up to date in many ways

I just installed 4.4 Alpha 1 and found a couple things.
The Light/Dark buttons are grayed out in the control panel. So a light background is out of the question for apps.
Next, I installed a program and from then on, the headers and border for applications and ROX were red in color!
I seem to remember that JWM in a newer version defaulted to red borders and headers for windows.
Also, the free space tray thing showed up at the top left corner of the screen and the lower tray menu bar and menu button had disappeared as well as the top drop-down menu.
Not good things to happen when installing a program that is not a PET that restarts JWM.
So is this a bug?

When you change the number of desktops, the "menu" button ceases to respond.

Ok, that is the same bug that I self induced - I edited what I thought were static files in Zigbert's work of art, trying to revert to more traditional behavior.... must need to change config files instead

Reinstalling the latest "Dude" should clear up both of those.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=53680

Then to change the menus to how you like them (traditional or otherwise), just open Control Center (PCC) and click on Desktop and then Menus (under the general tab)

Reinstalling the latest dude did not help.
the Light/Dark buttons are still grayed out in Control Panel/Environment.
Also, the moment I run the already installed tar.gz program, JWM reverts to red borders on all windows and the menu, taskbar, and top wbar menu all disappear and wbar does not respond.
Had to Alt/Ctrl/Bkspace to exit. And a restart of X did not help.

Can you be more specific - What already installed tar.gz "program" ?

whatever it is it is messing up one or more of the jwm config files (btw it is ptray not wbar)

as for the greyed out area - it looks like they were intentionally disabled

I reenabled them if you want to debug them - the top 2 functions are the applicable ones

As to what tar.gz program, it was a tar.gz that I made of sunburnt's driveman program.
When it is first run, it copies a desktop file to /usr/share/applications.
Then It copies some files to /root/Startup.
Then it adds a few lines to .jwmrc
Then it restarts JWM.
This is all the first time it is run.
When run again, it bypasses the above steps.
After the initial run of it, all JWM window borders are red, no top popup menu bar works, and the JWM tray at the bottom of the screen along with the menu button disappears.
It does not currently use Puppy Package Manager on install because of the changes it makes to .jwmrc.

I will have to try installing a pet on a fresh (no pupsave) install and see if the problem persists.
