Even I get paranoid now and then. Sometimes, if just to get myself to realize how foolish my paranoia is, I still run MindGuard. I know its a joke, but then the laugh is on me.
Note: Precompiled MindGuard can be made available, but there is no promise that it will work. PCLinuxOS somehow seems to hate it.

1. "(well OK there is one in the router)"
I'm no expert, but...
The problem with the firewall in a router is....
(a) It doesn't stop nasties sending stuff out.
You might have gotten infected by visiting a malicious website or by an email attachment, and that baddie is communicating with base by sending out.
(b) It doesn't stop nasties coming in if those are in reply to something sent out.
2. Hence it's a good idea to supplement the router's firewall with a software firewall running within the operating system.
This CAN stop stuff both going out AND coming in.

lobster has his computer meditating [in theory]
i wonder if there's a software psychedelic that i can give mine?
perhaps that's a new test for artificial intelligence - can it hallucinate?

You can try alpha and beta testing Puppy
for strange anomalies . . .
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LucidPuppy
For example I was just about to mention my imaginary psychiatrist
during this off topic rant . . .
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=413576#413576
. . . when . . .
the caps lock came on - I probably turned it on by accident
but it would not turn off and I could no longer type . . .
The ghost in the machine was taking over . . .
Or was it?
What was happening?
I was using the latest Puppy Lucid test
and I had not set my locales to UK - changed it and
restarted x and all was OK. phew
For a moment I thought I was being hacked
by my deadly enemy the corporate 'D-Men' from the future.
The only antidote to the D-men is the Chronology Protection Agency
http://tmxxine.com/web/projex7/cpa.htm
Now the above web page includes a javascript
that creates random semi-sense every time you press refresh
I know of someone who went through 18 pages of refresh pressings
and it all made perfect sense to her.
It is a perfect example of the ability of the mind to makes sense out of what is little more than gibberish.
Which is what you, dear reader, may just have done . . .

I felt the panic the other day. Suddenly Firefox or something else went totally crazy taking up almost all of 3GB RAM and for not reason.
So I shut the computer down and let it rest for a while and then the problem did not appear again. Could be some update of an addon. I have xmarks and noscript and simple mail
but none of them would take up all resources not even an update of FF either so something bad was going on. I wish one had some log one could look into to find out what was happening.

really, just more directed towards what i need to say or imply or wonder about
i think that in general random text should avoid infrequently used words, in order to appear more naturalistic
[i walk the line]

wow, you guys are deep!
Quote: | Can reality 'bootstrap' itself?
Reality exists because

only that forming patterns

predictable recognizable laws
have qualities of existence |
Had I written that text then some critical person had complained about my grammar maybe. and told me to rewrite it? No criticism towards Lobster. You are the Man!
I guess what the text wanted to say is something like this hasty mock up!
Reality (appears to us humans to) have existence because
that which we refer to as Reality emerge out of the quantum fluctuation
and manifest itself to us as matter which appears mechanical to us,
but only those quantum fluctuations that form natural patterns
that obey predictable recognizable laws
have the qualities that we refer to as having real existence.
Hahah, I at least get what I say but maybe I am so used to my very poor grammar that it is totally garbage to you guys. Be kind to the old man from Sweden.

Now that....I think I understand.
Except...
What's a "quantum fluctuation" exactly?
My son teaches Physics.
Should I ask him perhaps?

A one hour lecture available online for free. I am too lazy to search for the best links
but write this in the google search
"Lawrence Krauss" "A Universe out of Nothing" quantum fluctuation
and many links comes up. I loved to listen and see that guy but I understood almost nothign of it but kind of cool to be try to grasp even if I failed at it.

and a loaded pistol in my underwear drawer
Never had underwear needing that level of protection . . .
is it antique? Shocked
People have been shot over far less than a pair of old drawers. If somebody wakes me in the night needing to be shot I intend to oblige them post haste.
Where does everybody else keep their firearm? My Daddy kept his under his pillow. That seems too close. Mines been in my underwear drawer so long that's where I'd look out of habit.
Since I'm here and this is on topic (unusual state of events for me) does any body else think their computer might have a haint? I bought this laptop from a fellow named Craig. It was supposed to have been wiped clean with a reinstall. It came up pretty quickly this laptop clearly belonged to Carl. There's even pictures of Craig and Carl. This laptop does some strange stuff, which leads my imagination to race ahead and think maybe Carl's dead and haunting my laptop. He could have got shot messing with somebodies drawers. I know that has happened. I believe my wife would shoot me if she caught me messing with some woman's (guess I should say somebodies to be PC) drawers.
Well I'm off on a tangent again. Anybody else got a ghost? I'm not scared. I figure a ghost would see one day we'd meet in the afterworld by and by and then there would be a reckoning.
You all take care

Guys
Robert Anton Wilson explains quantum physics
on my latest blogging site April 27, 2010
http://tmxxine.posterous.com/
It is possible that there is such a thing as 'quantum paranoia':
The fear of being watched
produces the observer.

They say, "On the first Saturday of May all eyes turn to Louisville for the historic running of the Kentucky Derby" As my profile says I live in Louisville. All eyes, think about it. That's a bunch. Kind of scary.
Lobster, are you goofing on me?
Everybody else, is it OK if I goof on Lobster a little or do I need to let him be?
Edit- I'm not asking for permission. I'm asking is he like a wizard or something? Have any of his enemies died from mysteriously swallowing their tongue or some weird thing such as that?
Edit edit- OK the pistol's under my pillow just for tonight. Wizards about dang.
