DIY - How to Install Flash Player

Six months or so ago, I remember a lot of problems with Flash Player causing browser crashes. I personally haven't seen that recently so I am thinking there have been improvements. Many versions of Puppy come with Flash Player already installed, but if you would like to install it for yourself (or install the latest version or any previous version) it is extremely simple.

1. Download Flash Player. The latest version is at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (Click the drop down menu and choose "tar.gz for linux").

1b. If you would like to try previous versions of Flash Player, then go to http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html (you will download an archive containing *all* of the Version 9, or 8, etc., Flash Players--so unpack the archive and choose the version you want).

2. Unpack the file that you download ("install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz" for the latest version) by clicking it and then choosing Extract.

3. The file that is unpacked will be "libflashplayer.so." Copy that file into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. (Open one window containing that file and then open another window on /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and drag libflashplayer.so into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and then choose Copy.)

4. In Firefox/Swiftfox you can check by clicking Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins which will show you which version of Shockwave Flash is installed. In Seamonkey you can check with Help -> About Plugins.

4b. You can also put libflashplayer.so into /root/.mozilla/plugins (which you can create if it does not exist) and then the browser will show you both the version installed in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and in /root/mozilla/plugins, with the version in /root/mozilla/plugins taking precedence. This way you can test different versions and then return to the default version for your Puppy. Watch out! Seamonkey 1.1.17 seems to give precedence to the flashplayer in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

5. Go test Flash Player on your favorite site. Hulu.com is one I use because a while back all the browsers seemed to be having trouble playing it full screen, but they seem to be having better luck now. The official Flash Test is at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ To confirm which Flash Player is being used, Right-click on any Flash object/movie and at the bottom of the pop-up menu that results it will say "About Flash Player 10" (or whichever version is being used.

Can somebody try the latest flash on 4.3 pre-beta-reloaded?
I miss full screen movie viewing

Up until aprox 3 back of the latest Puppy alpha releases
I was able to use the existing flash 10 pet

If I was a true geek I would do it myself and create a .pet

hey lobster

i just tried with 4.3prebeta-reloaded and the latest flashplayer (10.0r32 is how it shows up in Help -> About Plugins in seamonkey 1.1.17). Hulu.com played full-screen just fine. Oh, I used the hulu.com control to select full screen--it is to the right of the screen--you must mouse over to see the icon for full screen once the video starts playing. I installed just like in the DIY instructions--except seamonky 1.1.17 gave precedence to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins so I had to rename the old flashplayer. Also, I was using xvesa--who knows if that would matter

I actually don't watch flashplayer videos that much, so could you give some urls to test? btw, default in 4.3pbr is flashplayer 9.0r48--hulu won't play with that.

On restarting SeaMonkey, Help -> About plugins shows that the version of Flash is now 10.0 r32. Adblock is disabled and Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced shows the box to Enable Java is checked. However, I still can't see FarmVille in Facebook, and the Flash test here doesn't show anything.

Oh, it is a mystery now. I did this also with one difference: the box in Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced to Enable Java is *not* checked (and java is not installed). When I go to the Flash Test at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/, Flash *does* show as installed (Shockwave Player shows as not installed and in the box below that Flash shows as installed). I have never used Farmville but I will try.

Add: I just checked and Farmville starts, plays music, lets me create an avatatr, pick cucumbers, and so forth. Weird. I am using a new, clean install of 4.3pbr; with no modifications, other than installing Flash Player and Java. I am using xvesa because the video detect in xorgwizard turns the screen black; that's all I can think right now.

@Flash, How did you install java if I may ask? And does Farmville require java?

Add: I just checked the Edit -> Preferences -> Enable Java and java is installed, and the Flash Test still shows that I have Flash.

I didn't, and I don't know.

I didn't install Java, it came with 4.3 pre-beta. I don't know if FarmVille requires Java because I haven't been able to get FarmVille to work.

Farmville works in 4.3 beta 1. I didn't revert back to the old version of Flash before I upgraded my multisession DVD from 4.3 pre-beta to 4.3 beta 1, so the Flash upgrade I attempted (described above) may have been incorporated into beta 1 with the upgrade.

The bug seems still to be there, where SeaMonkey sometimes closes unexpectedly when Flash is doing something. SeaMonkey shut down while I had several Facebook and FarmVille tabs open.

This 64 bit compile even though alpha will work better on your 64 bit system - well it did on mine

download, extract and put the llibflashplayer.so file in
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

Previously a flash movie of more than ten minutes crashed the movie and often the system locked

Very fluent and stable flash player plug-in is available: Flash Player 10.1 Release Candidate (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html). Download tar.gz, unpack it and replace old libflashplayer.so. My Puppy 4.31 loves new brilliant RC-Flash

A few days ago it was reported that flash player 10.0 is vulnerable. This risk was avoided by using the version of 10.1rc7. Now, Adobe has released the final 10.1 version: download tar.gz (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/), unpack it and replace old insecure flashplayer.so (from usr/lib/mozilla/plugins). Minimum requirements for Linux are 512 MB RAM, 128 MB graphics memory and 800 MHz processor.

Hello I just started using linux.Now I am trying to install the adobe flash player,tar.gz file but when I click on it It ask me to open it with another file but witch one do I need?
Or can I open it manually in the terminal and if so witch command must I use for that?

Hi,

A 'tar.gz' file must be extracted, first.

Click on it and then choose the option to 'extract all'.

It may then need to be compiled.

which puppy are you using. recent major puppies have this automated. xarchiver or something that says extract will do it.
manually in the terminal is also possible but i haven't needed to know this for so long i would have to look it up
