Updated to LHP 443 Gu2 using my existing savefile. It's working great, glad you liked my suggestions for additions, I've enjoyed using them.

Hope that your father is doing well.
Thanks,
Jim :D

Seamonkey 2.0.4 handles this site fairly well, only a couple of graphic & text overlaps.

http://media.myfoxtampabay.com/myfoxhurricane/

Although I had another page open and when I tried Back Seamonkey became unresponsive - requiring a Restart of X.

I returned to the Fox site with nothing else open and did Back with no trouble.

I then went here and was unable to hear sound:
http://www.jupiterfoundation.org/new_bw ... awaii.html

I went here and selected Bar Webcams and the Hogsbreath Saloon popped up a window - audio and video worked fine:

Headed out to the garden now ..

Hi edoc,
Thanks for the feedback on Gu2.
Anything in particular you'd like tested?
Yes, review the release notes if you haven't already, try Barry's report-video (I tweaked it for LHP and named it Video Reporting Tool, in the System Menu.) Also give MuppyQuickmount (File Manager/Utility Menu) a whirl. It has one minor bug--it won't repair an ext4 partition and I will fix that for the next release. If you have used TrueCrypt or Wine, see if they are OK.

Thanks again and enjoy your garden,
TazOC
[Edit: http://media.myfoxtampabay.com/myfoxhurricane/ freezes both Firefox 3.6.3 and SM 2.04--could be a Flash bug. The session save feature is great for this.]

TazOC

Thanks for providing all these Xdelta3 files, it makes updating a breeze :) .

Downloading the Gu2, Mariner, KDE, Voyager updates now.

A question. I see you built the base for LHP from woof. Are you using Slackware 13 binaries? If so would you mind posting your woof script modifications or if you have posted them, pointing me there? Thanks.

I also hope your father is doing well.

Cheers

Hi 01micko,
Thank you for your numerous efforts and contributions to Puppy-dom, especially Wbar Setup! Good question. I don't recall using any woof scripts, other than those in Puppy already. LHP was built on Puppy 4.3.1 plus many binaries from Slackware-current, a few from Debian, other binaries downloaded from various websites e.g., seamonkey-project.org, and the rest from various pets/puplets, SFS files and hand-written scripts. When I last edited /etc/DISTRO_SPECS I wasn't sure if COMPAT_VERSION='current' would be useful so I went with '13.0'. Most of the packages were decompressed with the 'Extract-*' scripts in /usr/local/bin including -pet, -tgz, -txz and -deb. There are also a couple of scripts in /usr/local/LHPdev that extract all txzs or debs in the working directory into a folder tree with one fell swoop. Then the files were pruned and tweaked for desired effect (menus/settings/multi-user etc.) and merged with 'cp -a --remove-destination' into the main file or SFS add-ons using Pizzasgood's priceless Edit-SFS.
Hope that helps,
TazOC

Tazoc,
In your updates for Gu2, did you change anything as far as graphics? I started with a fresh install and fresh save file, and every time I try to install the Intel Drivers that worked before... X locks up and dies.
Everything else works like a charm, but for some reason intel support seems to be wonky again.
I'll see if i can figure something out on my end (since i know you dont have an intel gfx system). But if there is any info you might be able to give me as an idea where to look, that'd be great.
Havent run into a single problem otherwise. TrueCrypt is working fine (since you asked if someone had tested it).
Also, I've gone ahead and compiled the latest Python and Perl into SFS files if you want to drop them on your LHP SFS page. Just let me know the best way to get them to you.

EDIT: I think I messed something up when I compiled Perl, so Ive gotta work on that.

EDIT2: As for my Intel issue. I have no clue whats going on with it. I've attached 2 xorg.conf files below. The one from a vanilla install of Gu2 with what xorg detects on its own, and one after I installed the Intel Driver. (Notice how the conf with the intel driver doesnt know the manufacturer of the hardware, but the stock one does.)
Here is another oddity. When I install the intel driver i have to re-start X obviously. If when x is restarting I move the mouse... x will crash. However if I dont touch a thing and wait 30 seconds, then x loads fine and xorg works flawlessly. As with F and Gu1 that I tested before I had to install the intel driver to get smooth HD video. Gu2 is the same, HD play is choppy with a/v desync or dropped frames. After installing the intel driver video is smooth.
But to make this entire situation more confusing, the system will work fine, until I reboot. Then X will fail to load at all, immediately dropping back to the command line. I cant get xorg to load at all at that point, until I load with Xvesa and uninstall the intel driver, and restart X again.

EDIT3:
I see 2 main errors in the xorg error log
Line 30

Code: Select all

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
and Line 759

Code: Select all

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so failed
(/usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

Hi everyone I have completed the frugal install and have discovered something (due to 4 power cuts in my area) with this being a frugal installation there is less code installed on to the hard drive therefore even with a power cut the effects are minimal is this correct?

Also the puplets for mode switching etc. by rerwin for use by 3gmodems the modems sometimes disappears (a simple disconnect-reconnect of usb cable rectifies this)

Everything seems to be ok taking in to account my limited experience with linux I am enjoying this version so far many thanks.

When you do a frugal install, there appears to be less files on the hard drive because of the way that the frugal install works. In reality, there are the same amount of files as if you did a full hard drive install. With a frugal install it keeps most of the files packed together until the system is booted or is running, then its expanded. An example of this is the pupsave file. Its 1 file on your system, but when your system is running that one file actually consists of thousands. It just bundles everything together nicely when you are saving or shutting down.
As for power outages, if power does die, you will lose any work since your last save. I think by default a frugal install saves the system state every 30 minutes, so you would only have lost whatever happened in the past half hour.

Dont worry about your limited knowledge of Linux. We all were there at one point. We'll help out where we can. The best thing you can do for us.. is when you have a question make sure you explain in as much detail as possible so we can best understand the problem. If you (or anyone else) just says 'its not working'. there really isnt much we can do to assist, since we dont have any idea what the problem might be.

Hi Q5sys,
The only change for Gu2 was to /usr/sbin/xorgwizard to delete a duplicate "#card0driver" comment from xorg.conf.
(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
That file is in MU's Intel pet with a date stamp of 05 Sept 09. Check to see if it is missing and d/l and reinstall xorg-1.6.3-upgrade-vesa-intel-2.8.1-mesa-7.5.1-02.pet
and recheck /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so and it's date. Restart X and run Video Reporting Tool in System Menu, then please attach /tmp/root/report-video.gz to your post. If it still isn't working, try re-running xorgwizard from CL.

TazOC,
Ive attached my report-video.gz to this post. I've got one before the driver install, one right after but before x restart, and one after xorgwizard and x attempted to start and crashed
I have created a new save file just to do testing with this issue so if theres I can do anything else you'd like me to try without fear of damaging my actual data. I also managed to grab the xorg messages file from one of the times I tried to start X after the driver was installed. Today however, if I let xorg load completely, my system locks... where as yesterday if I let it alone long enough it'd eventually let me work. Today, it just crashes and kills the system. (possibly because Im using a 100% fresh save file)
I've redownloaded the pet multiple times and the dates/times/file sizes all are what they should be. Even fired up a Gu1 disk with my old save file and copied that exact file over to Gu2 and Its still giving me issues.
I'd go the route of compiling the latest intel drivers on my own to see if that'd fix it... but the latest drivers require 2.6.32 or later kernel.
I just cant seem to figure out why there would be issues with the i965_dri.so file now, when there arent any issues with it under Gu1. Im pretty sure there arent, but are there any kernel changes from Gu1 to Gu2?

Q5sys,
Thanks for the reports. The kernel is the same, 2.6.30.5. We're still getting
/usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
what happens if you type in a terminal or CL

Code: Select all

ls -al /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
After the Intel pet I get:

Code: Select all

bash-3.00# ls -al /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2569640 2009-09-05 10:35 /usr/X11R7/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
Also I'd like to see the output from 'ver' in a terminal. And you can check /tmp/root/xerrs.log for any file copy/write errors immediately after installing the Intel pet. I suppose you could try disabling DRI by commenting xorg.conf like this

Code: Select all

# This loads dri module (if present)
  # Load "dri"
But I don't understand why i965_dri.so can't be opened. Maybe you could reboot with boot option 'pfix=fsck' to check the file systems for errors.

removing applications

#555 Post by gcoyne »

I have been using LHP for some weeks now and finding it very stable. I have just completed my first successful remaster after many failed attempts, with my remaster now containing my personalised system as I want it. However the Iso is now too large to fit on a single CD so I wanted to remove some of the applications that I dont want. Eg I have installed Open Office so I could remove abiword and Gnumeric. Can anybody tell me how to go about this as there does not seem to be an easy method. I know I will have to remaster to actually save the space but what do I do before this to remove applications and their menu items?

Also is it possible to have two instances of the panel with different functions in each panel?

Thanks in advance
Greg.

Hi Greg,
Good questions! Removing apps depends on how they were installed. If you installed from a pet, you can remove them with Puppy Package Manager, if installed with Gslapt, uninstall with Gslapt, if they are part of an SFS, unload that SFS and reboot.

I think what you are asking though, is what if they came with Lighthouse Base? That's the really tough part, you'd have to remove them a file at a time, and that typically means you need the binary package decompressed, e.g., d/l abiword-2.8.0-i686-dpup.pet and right-click in ROX | Extract-pet so you can see what files need to be removed. Ideally I would have a list of what files were in what package, but I'm not that organized... The menu items are in /usr/share/applications and are very small files.

Apps install into several locations, typically /usr/bin, /usr/lib and /usr/share but in many other places sometimes. Be careful when deleting files in any */lib/* folder as they may be needed by the system or other apps. You can use Gdmap graphical disk usage in the Utilities/File Menu to see what individual files are using the most space. Open / to see everything. In a frugal install the SFS files are in /initrd/pup_ro4,5... one 'pup_ro' for each SFS. The base files are in /initrd/pup_ro2 and your pupsave is in initrd/pup_rw.

Here's the bottom line. OpenOffice is about 180M compressed whereas Abiword and Gnumeric are less than 10M compressed. You can save about 256M by unloading the KDE SFS, if that is enabled in Menu | System | BootManager | Choose which SFS... Of course that means your remaster wouldn't have KDE, but then you could place the KDE SFS on a second CD. I've put a good deal of effort into making everything in the Mariner ISO fit on a CD but it wasn't easy. Pretty soon I'll need to cut KDE3.5.10 but even then eventually Base + Mariner + KDE will grow into DVD sized.

Fortunately DVD drives and media are inexpensive but if you're dealing with a laptop that doesn't have DVD burner I'm not sure, maybe you could get an external drive? I hope something I've said will help you find a solution.

ive also attached the xorg.conf where i edited out the dri line as well as the associated xerrs.log from /tmp/root/ and the xorg.0.log from /usr/X11R7/var/log that resulted from my attempt to load the altered xorg.conf file.
After looking through those I am very confused.
For the mean time at least, I am going to drop back to Gu1, until I can figure something else out. I did a fsck and everything is fine. Gu1 runs flawlessly on my hardware, so im clueless as to what could be causing all this.

I apprecaite your help, ive definately learned alot more about the xorg server because of all this.

I wonder if the Xorg-related files in Mariner SFS are conflicting with MU's xorg-1.6.3 upgrade. When you installed MU's pet in Gu1 was Mariner not loaded yet by chance? I'm thinking if you install his pet after booting with 'pfix=ram', restart X, if that works, then shut down making a new pupsave--and then load Mariner... or is that what you tried already?

Otherwise I just can't figure out why it would work in Gu1 but not Gu2. Weird, well at least Gu1 works.

Hi all puppy lgh is performing so well and I am now trying to use wine to install a usb webcam but wine flashes up a box which says error and stops installing the driver is it possible to get puppy to look at the driver and convert it somehow to linux driver.
