thanks Minnesota Smile Its nice to be thanked during a time of frustration, lol
The newer abiword open documents format works, but it looks like Barry didn't add docx to the mix. so once again no docx. but still odf format isn't bad. The newer gnumeric has the indent spacing in the print preview. funny I tried like 20 times in the older gnumeric to add the indent and its a no go.
grrrr

sinc, I use xxx_214.sfs but I don't think it should matter if you have "ignore above user selection" not ticked.
Of course they need to be the correct sfs version. I think that is version 3.0 for pup 214X.

Hi clarf I noticed the file /etc/init.d/hiawatha.run would break a system /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups link that had cups in, hence killing cups.
I fixed it for the next release Smile

Just got back home and saw RC5.
Had a very quick look.

1. no prob with download here.

FULL INSTALL

2. did a full install and zdrv.sfs issue resolved and could connect to net.
Still have problem of no desktop icon for the partition where it is installed. ie "home"

3. After the installation and the first reboot then Reboot and Power_off don't work. They just return to the desktop. So no way to do a clean shut-down. Afterwards they work okay. Never seen this behaviour in any puppy before. Will no doubt worry newbies and result in lots of forum posts.

4. Get some error messages on booting ..loading apm_module and ap_module ?? and battery?? Don't remember these in RC4. How can I capture these errors and send them to you?

FRUGAL INSTALL

5. did frugal install which went as usual.

6. the pet-get blue screens are much more legible now. Thanks.

7. tried to print from my samsung 2010 laser and HP desktop 6210 (connected over the LAN to a Windows XP PC) and neither would work.
Will keep trying but slightly worried as the JHP worked in RC4.

That's it so far.
Please ask if I can do any tests to help at this critical stage.

Printer tests... Brother on Parallel works, Canon on usb works.

Prints from Abiword and gnumeric. No margins on gnumeric.

Hi dave could you bootup live on your pc's with the printers using puppy pfix=ram and try printing locally, that way we will know if the cups is working or if a issue with samba. Network samba printing is always a bonus but local printing should work.
also did you check /tmp/xerrs.log for cups/samba/network errors?

Hi ttuuxxx,
It's very difficult to connect these printers directly to my test PC so instead I ran the Live CD on the PC which the printers are connected to directly.

I had a little problem with the Samsung ML2010_R laser initially but used a diff driver and now both printers work directly connected.

So it looks like a samba issue.

Going back to my orig test PC I checked /tmp/xerrs.log but didn't see anything obvious related to cups or samba.

Very late here so will check again tomorrow.

?????????????

Excuse me ttuuxxx, I don´t understand you. What´s the problem with those scripts?

In RC5 I see that /etc/init.d is not a link to /etc/rc.d/init.d anymore, now it´s a different directory and you have the same cups scripts in each directory. Also note that hiawatha.run scripts is in /etc/init.d but not in /etc/rc.d/init.d so it will never will be started by /etc/rc.d/rc.services at boot and also BootManager will not enable/disable it cause BootManager look at /etc/rc.d/init.d not at /etc/init.d that was a symlink before.

I suposse that you did that modification to fix something, but don´t know what?.

Hi clarf ok remember that I manually copy the files when building a release, but I can do it from the / directory so when I copied the last hiawatha.pet you made, it broke the link and only hiawatha was in the /etc/init.d directory and cups wasn't in it., I didn't notice until I made the iso and tested, then cups wouldn't start and there was an error that /etc/init.d/cups start couldn't start because the file wasn't found in /usr/sbin/cups_shell2. So I looked at where hiawatha.run was /etc/init.d/hiawatha.run and left it there. but if it needs to be in /etc/rc.d/init.d/hiawatha I can put it in that directory also, I wasn't sure where you wanted it. Just that when that pet was manually added it did break the link, killing cups so I figured it would probably be better to just make 2 directories and copy the cups in both, That way for sure it would start and not have issues, looking back probably should of did the same with hiawatha, if a you want me to do is copy the script into the other directory, not a problem Smile

Hi ttuuxxx,

Excuse me it´s my fault Embarassed . I should remember that you manually copy that file... The right way is to have both files in /etc/rc.d/init.d and keep a link in /etc/init.d pointing to there, so they are initialized by Puppy and user controled via BootManager, you also could change hiawatha.run execution permissions to disable it, users can enable it later when they need.

About RC5:

I tested Samba and Pnethood in RC5, works fine and not problems where found Smile .

I like the new right click options in memapplet. Smile

Pburn has sound, not freezes if media is mounted before blank or burn. Smile

Full installation problems fixed. Smile

Great work ttuuxxx, looking at your next work/project.
