Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 - 24 May 2010

#1 Post by playdayz »

We listen and we act.
--01micko

Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 is available below.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... se-501.htm

The main difference in Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 is that it returns to the traditional Puppy boot sequence and video choice. There were some people using cards that would not boot correctly directly to the desktop. It was no consolation to these people that most others could. So now, everyone can boot successfully into Lucid Puppy 5.0.1. There was also some concern whether the auto boot always chose the very best video settings, so that will be addressed also.

Lucid Puppy 5.0 would not exist without Woof of course and all the work Barry has done in developing and refining Puppy Linux. Nor would it exist without 01micko and all of the forum members who found the bugs and fixed the bugs. As far as I am concerned this is community edition. Thank you.

My aim is for Lucid Puppy to become a no-brainer to use (ie, no need to read the manual!). Just turn on the PC, and off you go...we're not there yet,... --BKauler

Vision for Lucid Puppy 5.0 -> It will have traditional Puppy screen layout and traditional Puppy apps (updated to latest versions). Things will work as Puppy users expect them to. The big move is to create Puppy on top of the Ubuntu binaries, which raises opportunities for future versions.

Edit, Lupu 004 works with xorg and does not have the choppy or jerky video but it has another graphic problem om old AOpen Barebone mini 910/915 chip series.

In Firefox the updating of the page when one scroll the lower half or one third of page get split up into garbage almost.

Not sure where I can upload a screen to show how it looks.

Congratulations to the Choice of Browsers. Genius indeed. I chose FF363 but don't mind Iron either. I have addons in FF that I am habitually used to like xmarks and simple mail and noscript and I doubt they are in Iron/Chrome.

What needs to be added is for the complete beginner a small text in the choice that tells them how to activate the browser.

First they have no way of knowing where it went after download?
I used Menu -> Filesystem -> Filesystem Find -> Pfind file finder

They have no clue such even exists.

Don't get me wrong. I love that you gave us a choice. Very good!

Hi playdayz,

Indeed wireless isn't working.
I have a ipw2100 wireless device.
It doesn't seem to be detected.
A pity indeed.

No worries Beem. We are just getting started. Lucid lynx won't even be released for a month. I fixed the version numbering problem anyway ;-)

@nooby. Can you give some url's and the software and such that you are using so others can see for themselves what you mean. I test upup with hulu.com and flashplayer and uPup at least plays full screen hulu OK. Thanks.
in case the word choppy is misleading. there is a huge delay in the movement so so it fails to catch up when people move about even very slowly. One feel seasick watching it.
That sounds like what someone else said about the graphics in general. Is dri/glx working for you? To find out, open a terminal and enter glxgears--if you get a graphic of some gears then dri/glx is working. If not then that might be the problem.

Hi playdayz.

Frugal installation on an ext3 partition. Super, I believe that it's already surpassed your upup458 in stability and it has amazing speed with all applications tried.

So far everything I've tried has worked except CUPS. It may work, but it won't accept the password root, woofwoof. Do you know another CUPS password to try?

My installation hasn't experienced any of the "choppy" video, reported by nooby (maybe an equipment or internet connection problem for him, his glxgears report should clarify it).

Additional software installed and working fine.
1. Gnome aisleriot solitaire 2.29.92 from lucid repository (had one missing dependency, libgmp.so.3, worked fine after it was installed.
2. Wine 1.1.40
3. e-Sword951
4. Bibletime 2.4.1 for dpup (has missing icons, but dpup has same problem)
5. pwidgets 2.2.5
6. Firefox 3.6.2
7. Amarok 1.4.10

Thanks,
Jim :D

Hi playdayz nice to see your moving forward with upup, :)
Is this the smallest it can be built? 1333Mb, did you add extra graphics drivers? I see you mentioned glxgears. Its so strange that woof is so much larger than puppy 4 series, because if you look at what you can pack into 33MB you wonder where did all that space go. Sure there are a few extra gnome deps, but 33MB compressed? I bet if you took all the applications you find in the menu, and add up there combined size, that it would be less than 33Mb compressed. I know the size is not your fault what so ever, just sparking a conversation :),
Funny Ubuntu picked Lynx as a name since its already a well know linux browser and Os
http://lynx.isc.org/lynx2.8.4/index.html
also its already a embedded Operating system, http://www.lynuxworks.com/
Really they should of came up with there own name. Or did a search on google, lol

Good news :P

I fixed wireless... missing libs.. but lucid is using a beta version of Wireless Tools! I guess they hope it will be stable by release date. So you can't use any old libs and hope they work.. they won't! I'll attach the debs in a tarball, they install straight in...

Cheers

(PS: what's the prize???   )

Dang, you're fast, Jim! I don't think there *is* a password for Cups. I will do what I did last time and hope that works again--just haven't gotten to it yet.

I noticed a fellow on the Karmic thread had trouble with Amarok. I assume that what you are doing is to go to packages.ubuntu.com and search for the program files and dependencies, download them, and then install the debs?

Hey Hey Micko. I'll do it tomorrow and upload again. Oh, aarf is going to want a delta file isn't he ;-) The prize is -> A free piece of art from http://opensourceart.us if there is any you like. Thank you very much. I didn't think it would take too long after you saw it!

Hello ttuuxxx. Good to hear from you. Yes, there are extensive extra graphics files and drivers. Part of the mission for uPup (as I do it anyway) is to install working dri and glx for every user. I think we are coming pretty close to that. I believe that everything is more stable when dri/glx is installed--I have no proof of that however--other than that some programs are written with dri/glx in mind, and even expected. We especially get good stability with the more advanced browsers and flashplayer. BTW, uPup 4.58 would run the latest (and fastest) browsers: Firefox 3.6, Iron/Google Chrome, and Opera, and it will run Opera 10.50 as soon as it is released for Linux. I expect Lucid Puppy to do the same. Those are two benefits of the extra heft of uPup. We have not added any extra programs or functionality, so the 33MB is mainly from the graphics files. As I recall, that it about what the pet for Xorg (full) ran in Puppy 4. If anyone wanted to do a stripped uPup I would make all of my notes available. Stay in touch--this is a fun project.

Well that was fast, 01micko.
Two hours after I went to sleep, you posted the solution, so I could apply it when I woke up fresh this morning.

I used the SNS to configure the network and didn't have a problem.

One thing to test tho, if the settings persist between boots. I'll report on it later.

Now play time with Lucid. :)

That's good Béèm :) . Seems like a nice pup so far.

Unfortunately Ndiswrapper is broken in 2.6.31.5 kernel :(

It's a known issue I mentioned in the Quirky 006 build. I tried to compile it from source but exactly the same issue crops up, and ndiswrapper fails to load. "Unknown symbol" error. This prevents me from using anything with that kernel on my old p3 in my shed.. it's too far to run a cat5 cable, and the acx linux driver seems to be abandoned in later kernels. Ah well.

Cheers

Yes too bad for the ndiswrapper for those who need it. Not me fortunately.

But you could use the power lines in your house to run ethernet over it.
I suppose you know about that solution.

black background issue.

#14 Post by Béèm »

Didn't realize it immediately, but the icon backgrounds aren't transparant, but black.
I remember something about 16-bit in xorg solved this, so I did run xorgwizard.
Hte background was indeed transparent, but white was some greenish and luminosity was very low. Not workable.

So I dropped the xorgwizard way of configuring and edited directly xorg.conf.
No success with the ati or radeon driver in 16-bit. Still a lack of luminosity.

Finally I tried the vesa driver in 16-bit and that did solve the issue.

So I know now how to correct in quirky as well.

Hope that a solution will be found for 24-bit as well.

Oh yes my video is:

Code: Select all

bash-3.00# ddcprobe
vbe: VESA 2.0 detected.
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500

Yes, know about, but not much else... probably not feasible since the power to my shed is via an extension lead from the main house. I suppose ndiswrapper will be fixed in a later version. Just out of interest.. what kernel does Ubuntu Lucid use , anyone know?

Yes .. narrowed down to a JWM issue.. Barry has mailed Joe Wing about this one, although, by all reports, latest xorg (7.5?) is still buggy, especially with Intel chipsets.. (kattman  )

Thanks to 01micko for wireless and luck for Cups, both of those are working in Lucid Puppy 002.
