How to listen to .ums, .ram, .mms streamed audio? (Solved)

#1 Post by JustGreg »

I have been trying to listen to some audio from the web. The audio streams are either UMS (Unreal Media Stream), RAM (Real Audio) and MMS. GXINE plug-in (I am using Firefox) does not work with them. I have tried Mplayer without any luck.

Does any one know where to find the codecs for this audio streams. Next question is how to add them to the GXINE plug-in. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have given up on using the forum search function. It either turns up too many posts or nothing. The Puppy Google search seems to work the best. I did find how to get the MMS audio to work.

One has to use Gxine and paste into the open MRL window the site location. This will start the stream, buffer it and play the audio. I tried to use VLC, but, it could find the site and start the stream for some reason.

One down and two to go.

Now to look at Real Player pet.

This is how I enable mms streams in gxine, mplayer or vlc, with
seamonkey.

1.) Open Firefox, (seamonkey), type "about:config" (no quotes) in the address window, and click enter.
(2.) Right click on the window and choose <New>, then <String> from the pop-up menu that appears.
(3.) In the first pop-up box, enter: "network.protocol-handler.app.mms" (no quotes)
(4.) In the next pop-up box enter the path to Kaffeine (e.g. "/usr/bin/kaffeine").
(5.) Now, click in the main window again but choose <New> <Boolean>
(6.) In the first pop-up box, enter: "network.protocol-handler.external.mms"
toggle
(7.) In the second pop-up select <True>.

Substitute name of player for kaffeine.

Edit: 21 oct. 2010

For Seamonkey 2.0.7 in Wary 09 (Should work for other new Seamonkey also). Wary has gnome-mplayer.

Install libmms .pet

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 083#459569

In step 4. use "/usr/bin/gmplayer"
In step 6. use "network.protocol-handler.expose.mms"
In step 7. select <false>

Google Squid tv > click a station > it will ask you to find and
choose a player.

Thank you, rjbrewer. I did try the procedure with FireFox Version 3.6. It failed. I still get protocol has no application registered. I double checked the path and spelling, but still no luck.

I did find the Helix.pet would do Real Audio, protocol rtsp. I was hoping it would also support the mms protocol. But, it does not have a codec for it. I do like the user interface. I will check the Helix site to see what I can find.

Once again, thanks for the help

I did visit and search the Helix community site. Yes, Helix does not support the MMS protocol. No reason was given. But, I suspect it may have something to do with software patents.

I did find Thuuxxx VLC pet. It works fine and does support both MMS and RTSP. When I tried to open a MMS site (mms://thegulch.shacknet.nu:5119/Gulch) I get the following error messages:
access_mms error: cannot connect to server
access_mms error: cannot read data
access_mms error: cannot read data
main error: cannot pre fill buffer

It does access the network connection.

I get a similar set with rtsp. Here they are:
main error: option rtsp-caching does not exist
main error: no suitable access module for `rtsp://136.244.12.63/32k.sdp'

Thank you in advance for any help. I have given up on using Web Browser. I would just like to have one program (player) that does it all.

I reset the variables, which deletes them. I tried jjbrewer process again. I get this error message:
Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (mms) isn't associated with any program.

I also check the FireFox Wiki. It had a similar process without the Boolean variable. It also produces the same error with a MMS location.

I did find several postings saying the process did work. I have no idea why it does not work.

At this time, I am trying to get a single media player to work on both mms and ram or rtsp.

Thank you in advance for any help or ideas!

Nice trapster.
Didn't know I had mplayer on the system.
Did work from the console, but no sound when opening the gui of mplayer and choose open|url|mms://thegulch.shacknet.nu:5119/Gulch

Thank you, I will try Mplayer first. I have it, with the extra codecs package.. I will down load pupRadio and try it later. Thanks. The Gulch is a shortwave receiver. Once again, thank you both Béèm and trapster.

Your welcome. I could hear indeed it was a shortwave emission stream.

Personally I play everything except Flash video via Mplayer + Mplayer-plugin, which embeds Mplayer in the browser. I can't say I've found a need for the extra Mplayer codec packs.

Thanks, everyone for the help. I did find that mplayer and Gxine will play the mms site. PupRadio is a very nice GUI interface to both Gxine and mplayer. It does work on the sites with mms protocol.

The sites using rtsp protocol are a bit strange. Sometimes, mplayer with the extra codecs package works and sometimes it does not. The problem appears to be site related. I like college/community radio stations. The problem is they go to their" own drum". The player that worked the best was Helix player (open source of the Real player). However, it also does not always work for all of the stations that interest me.

With ums protocol, mplayer with extra codecs package does not work.

For now, I will use mplayer and extra codecs.
