Final: pup4pentiums 208MB

To see how fast full featured puppy can be.

...Anyway this is based on the Barebones puplet with applications compiled for pentium 4s:
  • XFCE 4 Pentiums (4.6.1)
    Swiftfox (Firefox 3.6) with Simple Mail, FireFTP, Flash
    Speed 4 Gimp (2.4.5)
    Audacious 2 (2.2)
    Geany (0.18.1)
    Tar (1.22)
Abiword is not i686 but rather uses technosaurus' excellent compile because I couldn't get openxml to work. WV however is recompiled. Last but not least Skype is also included.

My previous endeavors have proven that no matter how optimized a full install it's still no comparison to a frugal install, so this was stripped with that in mind, all of the extra icons and themes from the NOP directories and most of JWM deleted.

Network Wizard stopped working after having done this but the old version is still OK, and this shares the quirk with NOP's XFCE pet of JWM showing up at startup until the desktop is clicked, because I merged my binary executables with it to get the directory structures set up properly.

A couple extra goodies like Ristretto and Weather plugin.

Update:
  • compiled pdf viewer and calculator
    said wth and included Wine 4 Warcraft (1.1.4)
    added original theme "Emerald Alien"
    Cleaned up launchers, fixed menu entries, moved logout to the main menu
    Optimised readability issues with the dark theme
    The Swiftfox "suite" - including mail client and FTP - now run as non-root user "notroot"

Update Final:
  • compiled gnumeric, and conky and xdesktopwaves eyecandy
    Fixed permissions for Swiftfox web browser so that addons work smoothly and downloads can be saved directly to the desktop
    Flash now runs by running as root Swiftfox only (left autohide panel) and is disabled in the regular one
    Said root browser also has Better Privacy addon
    Merged orginal theme "emeraldAlien" with blueheart graphics + customized
    Skype updated to latest version with desktop sharing (2.1 Beta 2, the one from this forum is 2.1 Beta) and now also runs as non-root user
    Cooler mouse theme
    The end!

Just downloaded and burning as I post.Screenshot looks great so I'll give it a good test run.

It still works on AMD Dual Core 64Bit but I failed to find a shut down symbol or entry for it in menu or on desktop. I tested a lot of things but was too newbie to know how to shut down.

Maybe one have to go to Console and write Halt Stop or something. I gave up after several trial and error and hold in the power button for some seconds and did a hard reboot.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I've only taken a quick look so far, but it looks very promising. Some traditional Puppy users may find Xfce a bit disorienting at first - BTW nooby, ' logout ' rather than ' shutdown ' brings up the ' shutdown, reboot... ' menu -, and if I try it on my laptop I'll add Pwireless2 as i know that works with my wifi whereas plain vanilla 4.3 doesn't. One suggestion, as it's aimed at older pentium hardware you might want to look at this thread ;-

@technowomble: The menu structure is messed up, and XFCE took out the gui menu editor in version 4.6, I will try to update the launchers a little bit (i.e. Skype).

I didn't understand the link you posted, shutdown and reboot works ok and is located on the autohide panel on the left site, are we talking about suspend and hibernate?

@nooby: I didn't think so, but you better confirm with the experts here what happens when you run off AMDs, those will be my next project!

Hi Anniekin, I'm posting from your pup4pentium ATM.
But tell me I missunderstood, apps are compiled for actual P4 processors, I'm running it on AMD as nooby :) When you wrote that it's for P IVs I assumed that it's optimized for that architecture compliant. There's actual parameter when compiling to tell it to configure for Pentium?

Anyway, here are some of my first thoughts and suggestions:

-It boots into XFCE by default but it loads Puppy Pinboard for ROX, you can disable that in .xinitrc
-Your default theme is black (which I like) but ROX Filer file names are coloured which makes them not pleasant and hard to read. You can change that in Rox options under "colours" tab ("Color files based on their filetypes" <-- Uncheck that, not sure where it saves conf, probably in /root/.config/rox.sourceforge*)
-Swiftfox has your history remembered and tries to restore your tabs on first start.
-Audacious has also some stream urls remembered (this one I'm listening is nice :) )
-There are two menu entries for GIMP (delete one .desktop file from /usr/share/applications)
-There's no console icon on deskie? But you do have pupremaster not usual to keep on desktop heh? :)

Default apereance is really good it looks real cool and so far swiftfox runs good but still haven't tested enough, booted 20 mins ago 8)

Thunar is the default file browser though not ROX

Console is on the left autohide panel also

I've had a chance to try Pup4pentiums on my laptop ( 400Mhz P2, 192Mb RAM, which may be rather less than you had in mind! ) Sadly it couldn't get past the initial ( standard 4.3 ) desktop. Clicking ' connect ' brought a pop-up ' unable to contact settings server ', closing that brought up ' unable to open failsafe option ' and closing that dropped me back to the prompt. On my desktop it boots successfully, so it doesn't appear to be a problem with the download or burn, and although my laptop does have issues with 4.3 Zigbert's Stardust 011 which I happened to have to hand booted OK, which makes me wonder if it's a RAM issue related to you're use of Xfce? My laptop is a Dell Latitude CPi, built for Win98, probably around 2000, and Puppy runs OK up to 4.2.*, but 4.3 will boot, reboot, but at shutdown it gets to ' system halted ' but won't power off. Hence the thread I linked to, which seemed to offer an answer, but having looked into various directories in 4.2 and 4.3 I can't understand it either!

It seems from the comments given that hardware specific compiles are more forward- rather than backward-compatible.

A couple notes:

Noscript is a Fire(Swift)fox plugin which prevents javascript from running, unless you selectively allow them on pages of your choice, and is also what is preventing your Flash from loading.

On pages that you want to allow Flash just click on the "S" icon on the bottom right corner of the browser, and choose "allow thispage.com", in the case of Youtube for example you have to allow both "youtube.com" and "ytimg.com" which will be the two choices in the noscript menu.

Pages will also load even faster if you follow the advice of another thread on this forum, and enter about:config in the address bar, and type google in the Filter bar.

Then double click on each value and delete all references to them (spying on you), except maybe the noscript ones, not sure if they are good or not.

And as an extra bonus Audacious 2 has streambrowser build in.

If it is not enabled already it is under preferences>plugins>general and is brought up under the plugin services menu.
