I have uploaded the Stardust files (see bottom of this post). It is NOT meant for general use, but for experiments only. The packages is
- StardustDE which holds the added/updated files to get a Stardust Desktop Environment. It is large, but most of it should replace original Puppy stuff. Note that original icon-themes are not entirely compatible with Stardust. The included theme weight alone around 230Kb. Note! gtk-theme-switcher2 is required by Stardust to change gtk-theme, and is not included in this pack.
- Stadust_build_script is the script I use to build the Stardust iso. The only part that is important for Stardust Desktop Environment, is to remove some original icons, rox-files... This is not critical, but you will get some quirkies. This script is not meant for any other person than Ziggy (it is hardcoded for my system), so look at it, and see how Stardust is built..... Don't expect it to build any Stardust iso for you.
- Stardust_Pwidgets is a stripped version of the original Pwidgets. I don't think it should harm anything to use the original Pwidgets, but building a 99Mb operating system requires complete focus on every kilobyte.

The following list shows many items that is taken out of the iso. But, it is not as critical as it seems. Most of these are tiny apps, and you have not been aware of many of them. Simply because other apps do the job.

Aqualung has left, and Pmusic is back. Pmusic has evolved in both features and speed, so It is more a matter of longterm strategy. I hope it will be possible to build more around ffmpeg in the future. We could hopefully get rid of lidsnd, libsamplerate and maybe libxine...

Gadmin-Rsync is out as well, since it crashed on first run. I don't think Pbackup fill the backup issue completely. It would be wonderful if there exists a tiny but complete backup suit.

If you see something that you would have changed, added or removed, I will be very glad if you mentioned it. Because of my limited time, it would be best if you deliver the patch.... My knowledge of network/internet tools is close to zero, so these are nearly untouched.

Possible improvements are easy to see
- Improve artwork.
- alternative multimedia tools using ffmpeg.
- hunt more files we don't need.
- upgrade gui in some of the scripts.
- extend the control center.
- replacement of Gparted (901kb)
- boot Puppy with pfix=fsck
- driver adds/updates
- ...

This is meant to be a full featured user-oriented Puppy....Though, I have to admit that the biggest modem drivers is removed.

Hi Zigbert,

I'm now running 012 on my dual-core machine without any initial problems. So far, I haven't found any place where you lost ground.

With CPU frequency scaling on, CPU temperature drops from 32 C to 18 C. The only downside seems to be a sinister turn in naming. The former "Bookcase" is so cool it now insists on being called "Darth Book", while the former "Boxoven" only responds to "The Twonky".

Important note: This delta file was created with the new xdelta gui. You can see the file has three underscores as the delimiter. Most will only have the old xdelta which will not produce the correct filename of "pup_stardust-012.iso" but "newfile.iso" . If you have already done this then it should be ok to rename the "newfile.iso" to "pup_stardust-012.iso".

To get around this remame pup_stardust-011.iso___pup_stardust-012.iso.delta to pup_stardust-011.iso:pup_stardust-012.iso.delta replacing "___" with " : ".

zigbert I can't find a pet of the new Xdelta but I have left a note on Barry's blog so I will let you know when I have it posted in my Xdelta HOWTO.

Take a look at snap2 although it's still in beta it has potential and is much faster than dd, although you will need to include rsync again.

Thanks for sharing your stardust, 012 is running great, each update seems a little more stable than it's predessor, even with additional features.

I'd still like to see some added features:
1. An option added to the Control Center to the Mouse/Keyboard section to turn NumLock on/off. For those of us that primarily use desktops with a full keyboard, it would be helpful.
2. A blue theme with lighter background. The dark themes, although they look great, are hard on older eyes.

I converted my pupsave-012.2fs to 3fs and modified the initrd.gz file so that the pupsave-012.3fs will mount properly as a journaled file system on my ext3 partition. They are working great. I hope that you are considering having options to create pupsaves as 2/3/4fs with the corresponding changes to the initrd.gz so they will mount properly as journaled file systems on ext3/4.

Like the look and feel of Stardust-012. Very nice.

If I remaster Stardust-012 (and 010 also) I find I cannot print using my parallel printer. Message is "Printer not connected..." This only happens on remastered disks. If I save to the hard drive, printing is normal. Not sure if this is a bug or if I need to make changes in the etc file during the remaster.

Is that a text from Zigbert or your view on Stardust 012?

I do have pup-431-2.iso installed on my HP and have tested it and sure it needs more feedback from us.

But it is not easy for me to find which thread is the best to give feedback on. Because it is named pup-431-2 but also pup-44 and as I remember that had two threads?

What kind of feedback if if most importance? I have less problem with that one than with Dpup or Upup. in my Notes I wrote pup-431-2 just works. sure some things are missing but it doesn't behave as Dpup and Upup does on streaming video.
