I came across "Random acts of Genealogical kindness" some years back.

I used to regularly do this on an informal basis; not as part of that organization.
Helped various people.
e.g.
1 Found the father she'd never met of a middle-aged Swedish nurse. Very Happy
Her father was living in Aberdeen Scotland.
He'd been a sailor who conceived her when in port decades before.
He was paying maintenance, but they'd never met, and she didn't know where he was or have contact info.
Found his telephone number, address, email within 3 hours [SUPERB!].
Spoke to him by phone, and he agreed to contact.
Gave him her details.
They got in touch.
Job done.

2. 85-year-old woman in Eugene, Oregon.
Found living Scottish relatives of her dead husband. Very Happy
Put them in touch.
She said I was now "one of the family".
Wife & self went to live in the home of the Scottish couple for a few days over New-Year.
Still get Chrismas cards from her husbands' brothers' 3rd wife.
Nice woman, intelligent and resourceful.

3. Canadian woman looking for details of important ancestor born 1821 in Scotland.
He was a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Scotland, who emigrated to Canada and helped build the Canadian school system.
She and husband came to Edinburgh and took self and wife out to dinner.
Showed her where ancestor had lived; magnificent church attended, where child was baptized. Very Happy

Thank you.

I know it's corny but I like the suggestion "If you see someone without a smile then give them one of yours." Smile
