How to install gnash on Puppy Linux?

#1 Post by thiadmer »

Hello everyone,

I need to play an Adobe Flash animation on an embedded PC running Puppy Linux. For that, I would like to install "gnash". I could not find a package for it.

Maybe there is an RPM that I can use. Can someone point one out for me?

Maybe I have to compile it from source. (I'd rather not.)

I need a stand-alone player, by the way, not a browser plug-in. I have the Adobe Flash player installed, but that lacks a command-line option to start full-screen.

Thanks for any tip,
Thiadmer Riemersma

I haven't seen any Gnash packages around here, but I haven't really been paying attention to the additional software section lately so I could easily have missed it.

If you just want to watch flash movies, I find that Mplayer works pretty well for that. I think GXine probably handles it too (I haven't touched GXine for months, but I vaguely remember possibly using it to watch a flash video one day last summer.) But this technique won't work for anything interactive or that's actually using flash itself to create the animation.

You can even create a "projector" which is basically a flash player executable with the swf builtin

Guys,
There was a little script created sometime ago, I think it was a script, that made the web browser launch Gxine to play any embedded Flash content.

That was a poor persons replacement for the Adobe Flash player.

But, I don't know where that was posted. I vaguely recall MU might have developed it? Does anyone recall?

Thanks to all who answered. I solved my problem, but in a slightly different way than your suggestions.

I have not tried all media players, but the particular "SWF" file that I needed to run did not work with VLC and some others that I tested. It worked with the Adobe Flash player and gnash. (I do not know anything about how this animation was built: there are at least three layers of managers between me and the developers of the animation, and communication gets distorted along this path.)

The animation had to run full screen; gnash has an option for this, the Adobe player does not. Hence my question about gnash.

Before arriving at a solution that works, there are two attempts that failed, strangely. I first tried to simply run the Flash animation in a web browser and make that web browser fullscreen. Since Seamonkey does not have a command line option for fullscreen, and Opera has, I installed Opera. The weird thing is: Opera would not fully support the particular SWF file (even though Opera claimed to be using the Adobe Flash plugin, version 10).

The second attempt was to launch the standalone Adobe Flash player, and send "Ctrl-F" to it with xsendkey. Strangely, on the particular (embedded) PC running Puppy Linux, the canvas of the standalone player would shrink to approximately 1/6th of the screen size. This may be a faulty configuration in Xorg (but I could not find it).

What I arrived at is: run the Flash animation in Seamonkey and send F11 to Seamonkey with xsendkey so that it goes fullscreen.

Thanks again,
Thiadmer

Hi all-- firstly I must say I feel rather priviledged to be posting alongside a few of the best minds in Puppylinux
(I've long been a lurking user, now hoping to start making amends with some bugreports and whatnot..)

A little wrapper to hand off to Gxine is a fine stopgap solution, but goes against our Free/OpenSource Software sensibilities, as it doubtless utilizes what one of the developers of Gnash has referred to as "proprietary binary blobs" (which I hope someone is checking for "phonehome" activity whenever included in Puppy wares, btw.)
Gnash has as its goal maximum compatibility with the latest stupid Flash product (of which we should be actually pushing a boycott, i.e. www.fsf.org/campaign > PlayOgg)
and the version 10 one is supposed to be out soon, with way, way less hammering of cpu (hooray for aging hw AND libre sw!)
The Gnash project is rediculously underfunded, and those do-gooders could use contributions from any and all folk with spare cash who support this liberation:

What most users probably don't realise is that SWF is not merely a way to embed video (the sane way being pushed at PlayOgg.org btw) but a whole, highly secretive scripting language unto itself (Activescript, which like javascript is based on ECMAscript (?)) and hence the horrific tracking and murky activities about which we keep finding.

That's helpful, how you were able to finagle SM to do what you were after. (I didnt know about xsendkey, thanks.) But in fact my dislike of flash entirely is behind one of the items in my master Puppy Gripes File, which I have yet to compile all in one place for posting (spans many derivatives, what a mess..) specifically: installing Noscript.xpi on my fresh install of SM doesnt get me free of Flash, so without wanting it, going to some mainstream website immediately starts loading stupid video which I never wanted/want to see.
If I ever get around to doing a derivative, the browser will definitely default to Flash being off (and/or at least replacing the proprietary blob situation with Gnash.)
