I've tried 4 different brands - Memorex, Sony, NEC, and a no-name DVD burner. They all worked fine. Some of the first-generation DVD burners may have had proprietary controls, but I'm pretty sure that the manufacturers all standardized the interface years ago, meaning you can be confident that (Puppy) Linux can use any new CD or DVD burner. A DVD burner may have non-standard feature(s) that won't work in Linux, but the basic functions should still work nevertheless.

Now watch someone prove me wrong.

They are pretty much of a muchness. The high speed ones seem to wear out faster (more wear and tear). Maybe someone can recommend what they are using and is available in your area - where are you?
In the UK I tend to buy from Maplins or PC World - there white goods (unbranded). Always buy generic.
Even cheaper to buy from fairs. I would not buy second hand. What do others say?

What is the best cheap new internal DVD burner to buy for an underpowered dual-boot Win98SE/Puppy system?

I have pretty much settled on the NEC ND-3540A, based on the reviews at cdfreaks, which seem to be the most detailed and technical anywhere:

I've used the following with Puppy Linux with no problems at all. If it is just a DVD-ROM then probably any one will work. If it is a DVD-R/RW then probably anything made in the last 2 years will work fine.

LG Electronics
LiteOn
Asus
Panasonic

Mr Gates claims that DVD lasers only last three years. Only buy clones - they are made by the same companies that manufacture for the main badges. Would've recommended Sony until the recent rootkit debacle - will never trust this make again. LG is OK but their website is poor on firmware updates. Samsung always comes out on top if you want a badge.
Soon, everything will change again with Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

This site has tediously even more thorough DVD burner reviews:

Very interesting to learn that even though the retail boxes require PIII-800 or even P4 1.4GHz generally, the official NEC website requires only PII-266 for basic burning.

buffer under-run protection

#8 Post by kethd »

All modern CD-RW and DVD burners come with various kinds of buffer under-run protection (burn-proof etc).

Are these features all supported by Linux burning software? By the burning software in Puppy?

Or, is it important to get certain brands etc if you want these features to work?
