Simply by trying it on your machine.

Thanks Beem.

So I'm going to get though a few CDs, then (I've found RWs don't seem to work).

John
I always use RW's but burn them at 1x.
No problem so far.

I started a brand new 431 and Gxine still had the same problem. I've got rather a lot on at the moment and so am going back to my earlier Puppy for now. May try again later.

well the failsafe approach saves a lot of stress....reapproach later (or it may get majically fixed Smile )

Couldn't quite let it rest, so went back to your original suggestion. I found the earlier kernel version of 431 hiding in a directory called 'Special Puppies', or something. Burned the iso file and bingo - it all works fine. Should have looked harder to start with, but didn't really have the time. Thanks again.

And thanks Beem for you advice about burning RWs at slow speed.

Glad you could fix it somehow.

Oh good.....not sure what's going on with this marginal performance with newer kernels....gets very confusing. The slaxer pup kernel seems to handle a broader range of hardware

For what it's worth I had a similar problem with pups 4.1 thru 4.31 on my Dell Dimension 2400 PC which had a CD-RW plugged in as sr0 and a DVD/CD-RW plugged in as sr1.

This configuration would never symlink /dev/dvd to /dev/sr1 and I could never get a dvd to play - UNTIL I reconnected both drives so that the DVD device was sr0.

With the changes I was able to put a dvd disk into the dvd player, click on the unmounted sr0 icon and automatically play the dvd with Gxine.

Note it didn't seem to matter with the CDROM whether I defined sr0 or sr1 as the CDROM device - both drives read & write perfectly.

Thanks for the tip. Ive settled into Pup421, but would like to try 431 again. I'll try swapping the drives around - I assume you mean physically connected, i.e., you swapped the little plugs that connect into the drives?

Perhaps he means setting the master/ slave links and connecting the master to the end of the connector.....I have had strange issues using chip select or any other config (and if we are talking sata well this post becomes even more meaningless Very Happy )

Yes that's exactly what I meant - the ribbon-cable plugs from the motherboard.

For newer PC's if all drives are set to 'Computer-select' - the drive at the end of the ribbon is master; if there is a middle plug it is slave.

If the drive is set by jumpers to anything other than 'CS' then that setting prevails.

Good Luck

OK, thanks. When I've got the time to take the case off again, I'll try swapping them and let you know how I get on.

Returning to this problem with Puppy Wary 513 and Lucid 528, with a nudge from other forum members, I finally took r_hughes' advice as above and now it works perfectly.

So belated thanks.
