I feel Google Chrome is fast. Therefore, kindly provide Google chrome pet package. I don't know how to make pet package from deb package. Google chrome development compatible for Ubuntu is available from google chrome website. I have installed in Ubuntu and it is working fine. I would like to install in Puppy Linux 4.3.

The thing with chrome is that it is huge, in Puppy standards. In my opinion Opera is a far better choice than google chrome.

HOWEVER, making a program that is usable in Puppy from a deb package is usually pretty easy, and I've found usually only takes me a couple of minutes. Here's how to do it in Puppy.

IF YOU CAN: I recomend using an sfs file as opposed to a pet file. In the Ubuntu world (I've lived there before) as with most other Linux's, you just install like you do in Windoze. In Puppy you have the capacity to do a frugal install which I recomend and which installs essentially a livecd to your hard disk. This boots to ram, uses a save file to keep changes, and is WAY faster than a full install, usually. Then with the use of sfs files you can add programs without fully installing them. All you do is tell Puppy via the Bootmanager (under settings I think?) to load that sfs file, and you have a new program that is loaded the next time Puppy boots up, and acts as if it is installed until you decide not to load the sfs file, in which case it doesn't run. It gives Puppy loads more versitility in this regard.

ANYWAY, the quick and dirty way to make a deb file into a pet file (notice, this does not check to see if there are any weird variables in the deb file. I've found Ubuntu stuff to work well in the steps I am about to outline, however you always do everything at your own risk, including this).

1. Unpack the deb file: a deb file like most things is sorta like a zip file, you just need to unpack it. I'm using Puppy 4.2.1 and I understand that 4.1 and up have "undeb" already installed.
Download the deb file. Save it to it's own folder. Open a terminal/console. Move to that folder. So, let's say you saved it to /root/my-documents/downloads/chrome.

cd /root/my-documents/downloads/chrome

then unpack the deb file

undeb google-chrome.deb

and that should unpack it fine. Then delete or move the original deb file if it still exists (we don't want it in our new pet file do we?).

2. Then repackage it as a pet file. Note: whatever you are putting into a pet file should have the folder order like this: (name of your program)/(things in your program). So, let's assume in our example that undeb created a folder like /usr/ within your /root/my-documents/downloads/chrome/ folder. So, let's get back out of the chrome folder:

and then repackage the new pet file:

dir2pet chrome/ chrome.pet

And this will walk you through a series of questions. READ EACH ONE and answer accordingly. Most of the time the default will be fine for you, but please read each one.

If you had just wanted to make an sfs file, you would simply have run this instead of dir2pet:

dir2sfs chrome/ chrome.sfs

And that's it. So really just two steps and you could have a new pet file from a deb, or an sfs if you prefer.

All that being said, I don't know if they have an actual deb version of Chrome out yet (the one most being used isn't a true Linux version but is rather a crossover that allows you to use the Windows version in Linux).

I would instead try iron (basically it is chrome; research will confirm the similarities/differences). It is already a pet file on this thread so you could use it instead.

But as one poster points out, Google doesn't necessarily have the best following in Puppy/Linux all the time.

Master MU has made an sfs on that site for download...

I repackaged as a pet and installed and it ran great (I did this on a livecd, so google isn't tracking my every move!

). I can't upload that pet file as it is 30M! But I would be glad to tell you how to do it; just post back if you are interested still; took maybe 2 minutes.

Chrome on windows uses an IE library namely t2embed.dll ...nice to know...I wonder what they use on linux instead of this ?

yeah...

there seem to be a couple of unsolved and unexplained mysteries when it comes to chrome on Linux...

Google Chrome is being developed under the name Chromium for Linux.

It uses Webkit, which I have found to be a bit wobbly on Linux, and adds bloat to a system which can easily and cheaply have extra browsers built using the existing Xulrunner code.

It is a nice idea however, and I hope the Webkit implementation progresses.

It works well, but needs a few extra files and a command line.
The files are:
dbus
dbus-glib
GConf

and the code, which is important, is:

Dear All

Thank you all for overwhelming response for my request for pet Package. I am also extending my gratitude to Shri.Steve_s for his detailed solution for creating Pup from Deb. package. I have created google pet package from google-chrome unstable.deb. However, I failed to install from my chrome pet package. My collegue told me it lacks supporting file.

I will try to install google chrome from links already provided by you.

I have installed Google chrome in puppy 4.3.1 ( full harddisk) . Thank you sikpuppy who has provided link to me. I feel Chrome is starting very fast.

I have installed the Google Chrome and it is starting fast. However, I have problem. I am getting internet connection through LAN ( http proxy settings). So tried to setup Proxy connection in Google Chrome. However, the "Change Proxy Setting" is not starting in Google Chrome. This is available in Option - under the hood - change proxy setting . While trying to click in "change Proxy Setting" I am getting another windows which says :-

I don't know how to set up http Proxy in my PC or Google chrome Browser. Also, due to lack of HTTP Proxy setting in Puppy, I am not able to install additional software through Puppy Package Manager. I googled solutions for this problem. However, I could not find any solutions.

Don't know how to set up the proxy in chrome; someone else can chime in, I'm certain. This forum is awesome for that, as you've seen.

As far as installing things goes, I'll be honest with you, I usually search the forum or a general internet search to find what I want then install it from there. But the forum search is the best and usually most efficient for me.

No response from Open Office and not showing anything. Only dbus file which is causing problem.

Was this run from command line? Open a terminal and type: swriter and see what comes up? If this has been done please disregard...

One of the reasons I did not notice that you needed dbus. dbus-lib and gconf for I am running Firefox and it needed those file already. So when I tested the pup file it did not show me any errors.

Also sorry about the slow response to your post but I am not receiving emails when something I am watching gets a new post.

Kindly refer to above, In this regard, you may please note that if installed above three files, Google Chrome Browser is working properly. However, my Open Office is not working. I find out the reasons for not opening Open office because of "dbus" file. When I uninstalled the dbus file then Open office working. Then another problem cropping up. i.e. Google Chrome won't work. This is typical situation. ( U may please note that Puppy 4.3.1 in Full Hard Disk Installation (da8) with Grub Boot Loading )

Kindly provide a simple solution for my typical problem. I would like to use both Open Office 3.1 and Google Chrome Browser. 4.2.
