Another 4.3.1 Puplet.... No name as yet!

#1 Post by sc0ttman »

Here is a puplet I made, using Barry Ks Puppy 4.3.1 (small)..

Download : http://www.sendspace.com/file/rjqkqh
(128MB, md5: 6ebf0369e3563a488299cee7b53fafe3)

Changes: Just a few app and theme changes, plus a few new apps..

I have removed seamonkey and replaced it with Firedog 1.2 (new)

I have added wbar to the desktop, and removed the icons..

I added the latest version of Puppy Arcade and removed the other games from the start menu.

I also added/updated the following apps: asunder, pcd, puptransmissioncli, pmusic, picker, pdrive, pupsaveconfig, sakura, clex, htop, no blank screen, iftop, pupsaveconfig, deb and rpm file support and some more little tweaks..

Most of the stuff I added is very small, and requires very little CPU or memory...

Nice, glad you like it.. It's just a simple remake of 431 with a different browser and better gaming options...

sc0ttman, I agree I really like the work you do. You make some nice stuff.

I have a couple of questions though.

Since puppyarcade is an sfs I don't need it installed, how can I remove puppy arcade?

secondly what do I need to edit to move wbar to the top instead of on the side?

I really like firedog, it has way more features than I could ever use.

thanks.

oh... one other thing, the forum has its own little tent icon maybe you could use that instead of the google icon for the puppy search. :D

EDIT: Well I figured out how to move the wbar inside of xinitrc.

First, thanks very much...

Removing Puppy Arcade will be a pain in the neck.. You could install the Puppy Arcaded pet file (it will overwrite what you got) and then read /root/.packages/puppyarcade.files for a list of the files, then delete them manually...

You would need to remaster after this to make the SFS (and RAM load) smaller after deletion.

And yeah, I only just noticed the icon is wrong on the Puppy search thing, I'll try to fix this for Firedog 1.3, thanks for spotting it!

sorry for the late reply, forgot to check this thread.

I'm trying this one out on my netbook, but have a problem.

The wallpaper won't come up, I just get a blank screen with a sidebar. Also, the sidebar is over the drive icon, which make it harder to mount my hard drive.

I'm booting from a flash drive on an Acer Aspire One D-150.

Excellent PUP construct - neat, intelligent, user-friendly

#8 Post by kingtubby »

Hey sc0ttman

Thanks for the streamlined Pup OS - well done, matey! Overall, a neat, well-balanced and thorough collection of genuinely useful apps.

If I may, just a few thoughts FWIW.

Firedog is impressive - slim, trim, fast, stable. Up until now Opera had been my preferred www/mail client.

A pity higher screen resolutions are not supported out of the box. (1680x1050 is my screen's native res, but only a max of 1280x1024 apparently seems available without resorting to an nvidia pet.....) [BTW my other current linux distro fave, Crunchbang (minimalist construct borne out of Ubuntu, from the wilds of Lincolnshire no less!), handles all screen resolutions out of the box easily.]

Personally I could do without the virtual games "Fun" menu, and instead, could make use of a solid music editor like Audacity. Also I find Gpicview is a more user-friendly image viewer.

These are trivial personal preferences, and do not, in any way, devalue the excellent contribution you've made to puppyLAND, sc0ttman. Thanks again!

It sounds like your PuppyPin is playing up, but I don't know how or why..

But you can check it out by going to Menu->Desktop->Wallpaper and set a new wallpaper, see if that helps..

ROX may then ask you to enable a desktop thing, which will help.. But I think it's already running on yours... It should be!

And also, if you enable/disable a different icon for each drive in the Puppy Drive Mounter, this can mess up the drive icons on the desktop..

For some reason, on all puppies, choosing to show one desktop icon for all your drives messes up the hide-drive-icons-from-desktop setting.

I suggest checking Wallpaper and Puppy Drive Mounter, and playing with their settings before you do anything else...

Hope this helps, but the next step may be to edit /root/.xinitrc

In /root/.xinitrc you can move the wbar by changing the 'pos' value from left to 'top', 'bottom' or 'right'.. You may need to remove the -'vbar' options, as well..

When you edit xinitrc, you must restart X to see the changes.

If this doesn't work, let us know how you got on, I'm sure a few more people are tweaking its setup as it's not perfect, I admit!

And I'm sure a few people will think that having Puppy Arcade installed is totally excessive, but I was actually building this Puplet simply to test Puppy Arcade in 4.3 - hence it's (possibly gratuitous) inclusion!

Sorry if this is 'extra' to your needs, but hey ho.. Deleting it is simple, but painstaking..

Thanks very much... I agree with all that you said about it... Puppy Arcade is definitely excessive for most peoples needs.. I like GPicView as well, also Viewnior, but it's not a killer issue, as you said.. Both 'get the job done'.. A most important feature!

Glad you like Firedog, some people said it's too slow... The 1st boot is admittedly slower than all others, as Firedog rebuilds a few files and PC specific settings that I deleted.. But I don't think it's slow!

Firedog does boot a little slower than SeaMonkey, and Xinha is no-competition for SeaMonkey Editor (or whatever it's called), but I personally can get a VERY high level of productivity from Firedog!

About resolutions:

I can only think that manually editing xorg.conf may allow you to use a higher resolution, but you may know more about that than me! I never use 'exotic' resolutions :D

No idea, what changes xorg.conf will support, happily!

I had already tried changing wallpaper, that had no effect. The wallpaper does come up for a split second if I right-click on the sidebar.

I'm going to be too busy for the next several days to try out your other suggestions. When I can, I let you know what happens.

BTW, I had tried Puppy Arcade in 4.3. I tried out a few of the emulators successfully, but haven't had time for anything more.

Possibly you need to remove 'above-desk' from the wbar line, near the bottom of /root/.xinitrc

No Emulators

#15 Post by lchile »

I downloaded this and installed on USB Stick - installation seemed fine, but there are no emulators on the Fun menu.

Can't seem to get Puppy Arcade PET you posted elsewhere to install properly on my other standard 4.3.1(again on USB Stick), messes up the installation - all desktop icons replaced by trianges with question marks, black destop, and many of the applications refuse to run (apart from the emulators which seem OK).

I've honestly no idea what that could be, never had any of those problems, nor has anyone reported those before to me, but possibly it's a save-file messing things up?

I actually don't know  It sounds as though *something* is doing more than resetting your desktop (or PuppyPin)..

Run some broken apps in the terminal (type their names rxvt or sakura) and see what errors you get...
This will give you a first step.

Arcade Pet

#17 Post by fsabatino »

Hi ScOttman,

Quick question. You indicate that you added the Arcade into this "unnamed" puppy based on 4.3x

However, in your Puppy Arcade post , you indicate that: Puppy Arcade v5 SFS for 4.3: (coming soon)

Am I missing something? I would like to add the Arcade sfs to NOP4.31

Thanks for your help and great work

Sort of, but not really.. :)

I used a pet file to add Puppy Arcade to this Puplet..
If I were you, I would add the pet file, or use pet2sfs (i think that exists!)

You can always convert the sfs for Puppy 4.2 into a compatible 4.3 sfs, using the "SFS Converter" by trio.

I will post an sfs for puppy 4.3 very soon, if all that sounds like a bad way to go...

thanks.. I'll take a stab at converting to sfs.
If that fails, I'll backup my sav file and install the pet for 4.2

If thaaaat fails... I'll sit here and wait for your update.

OK, I'll get on it, soon... Also, another option...

You could rename the pet file so it ends .tar.gz, then extract its contents to /

Then you can do something like:

Code: Select all

dir2sfs /puppyarcade-v5
