Browserlinux with Firefox 3.6.6 (new version 366v2)

#1 Post by puppymartin »

BrowserLinux: small Puplet for surfing the web.

- Firefox 3.6.2 or Chrome Stable
- First Setup, Auto Connect and PWireless2
- Based on PuppyLinux 4.3.1

Download: http://www.browserlinux.com/version3.html
(Firefox version 75Mb or with Google Chrome 78 Mb)

Or try the new version 4:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=443701

If you want an operating system for editing movies, writing letters or printing spreadsheets: don't use Browserlinux.
Browserlinux is for browsing the web. If you want more, use Puppy Linux!

Downloaded earlier today and works great.Since a lot of people only use the computer to surf the net, you built a great puplet... :)

Martin,
I like your puplet but the previous BrowsLinux 353 has much nicer fonts than the current version with newer kernel & SMP. That is my perception, maybe wrong?

Hi Lisek, There is no difference with 353. The same fonts and the same Mozilla-preferences. Is it real ugly?

Hi dWLkR, I removed al lot, but not GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA. I tested a bluetooth HTC and that worked. Give it a try.

Yes, the fonts are jagged on my PC with BrowserLineux354, dont know why. This may be coused by my Ati card?
Though with BrowserLinux353 the fonts are great.

Did you use de Microsoft Webcore Fonts installer?

Start at: /root/my-applications/Install_Microsoft_Webcore_Fonts.sh

What a shame, I didn't notice that before.
After the installation - it's ok now, nice fonts - many thanks Martin:)

Earlier I installed "Microsoft True Type Core Fonts" and changed these files:
font.conf
local.conf
according to SitHeelSpeak's suggestions here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10576

BUT that didn't help this time like in others puplets.
Microsoft Webcore Fonts - that's it.

Another question. I've installed your BrowserLinux354 [SMP] on USB-stick.
In the extlinux.conf there is:

Code: Select all

default vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash pfix=copy nosmp
My CPU is 2core - do I need delete "nosmp"?

Yes, delete nosmp and it will be faster. You can see the difference (the running CPU's) when you start htop.

BTW, try the new version: 355

Succes!

You can always find original files on:

- the ISO-file. Click on the ISO (or mount the CD)
- or at location: /initrd/pup_ro2.

Then and go to 'root'.

Code: Select all

<JWM>
	<Tray  autohide="true" insert="right" x="0" y="-1" border="1" height="28" >
		<!-- Additional TrayButton attribute: label -->
		<TrayButton label="Menu">root:3</TrayButton>
		<!-- Additional TaskList attribute: maxwidth -->
		<TaskList/>
		<Dock/>
		<!-- Additional Swallow attribute: height -->
		<Swallow name="blinky">blinkydelayed -bg "#292D29"</Swallow>
		<Swallow name="asapm">asapmshell -u 4</Swallow>
		<Swallow name="freememapplet" width="34">freememappletshell</Swallow>
		<Swallow name="xload" width="32">xload -nolabel -fg "#9C9C9C" -hl white -bg "#292D29"
		</Swallow>
		<Clock>minixcal</Clock>
	</Tray>
</JWM>

- or at location: /initrd/pup_ro2.
Ive found this way on the forum, but I have full install [dont see any /initrd/] and have no CD with BrowserLinux at my work, so your listing helped me at the moment.
Thanks Martin.

Hello
I love the idea of this and will install tomorrow, one question though, I have puppy 4.31 and pupeee on usb sticks, should I wipe it and have a complete reinstall or is it possible to just change a couple of the files (I'm guessing initrd and vmlinuz) on the stick, also my pupsave file will it still be compatible ?
hartelijk dank

Goedemorgen gonkbag,

To update, replace the initrd.gx, vmlinuz and pup-431.sfs.
And yes, you can use your 355 save file.

Succes.

btw, a beta version of browserlinux with chrome browser:

puppymartin,

Thanks for Browserlinux357.

Have you considered adding jemimah's "ramboot" to your "init" script in initrd.gz?
A frugal install of a puplet that's dedicated to web browsing, runs totally in ram, with no mounted 'sda1', that throws away the pupsave.2fs on shutdown; sounds like a fairly safe way to surf the web.
I did this with your Browserlinux355 and I like it. So I'll try it again with this one.

gyro

Edit: It works, I have attached the initrd.gz I used, just rename it.

package manager to extend browserlinux

#19 Post by nsh »

Hey. I downloaded browserlinux, and it works great on the (ssdless) eee900 i bought for my girlfriend (who's rather linux-illiterate). Other puplets have trouble with the sound/wireless/erata. However, I want to add some other software, such as abiword, amsn/pidgin, but am unable to find the package manager in /usr/share/applications.

Somebody in freenode#puppylinux assured me there was a manager in browserlinux. Could there be some reason I can't see it?

Alternatively, any other suggestions of a base from which to build a simple and usable puppy for my girlfriend that will have the eee900 hardware (particularly the wireless) as happy as browserlinux?

Many regards,

Lauri

I'am going to test it.

Thanks!
