Karmic Puppy 432 Bugs

#1 Post by tronkel »

Just downloaded Karmic 432.

X hung and did not detect the ATI Radeon HD3450 video card as did Upup Alpha 9.

Eventually managed to start X by editing xorg.conf but only ended up with low resolution of 1280 x 1024. Normally configured this should be 1400 x 900. MU's ATI fglrx pet loaded OK but still X would not start. This worked fine in 431 which also has the same kernel 2.6.30.5

Ethernet forcedeth module loaded and appeared to configure OK, but still no internet - so can't test the package manager as this needs to be online for downloading updates.

Neither Seamonkey, Puppy Browser nor console would start. Looks like some vital library is missing somewhere.

If others have similar problems, maybe a pattern will emerge that will pinpoint the problem.

LOL look at the download path name - a mixture of Debian and Karmic! Now there's an idea for Mark Shuttleworth!

Also had a problem with xorg detecting my NVIDIA Geforce 8400 card. Finally was able to get it to work with xvesa which is unacceptable.

Installed the NIVIDIA-185.18.36-k2.6.30.5-1.pet that works fine with 431. It appeared to install fine but it would not work.

The xorg video wizard hung up.

@Jim

A very similar experience to mine.

It's only a snapshot though, so these things are only to be expected.

The priority here is to test the build system. Once that gets sorted, the rest will follow.

Barry is the only one who really understands the Woof build system well enough to fix the bugs. In time, others will also gain enough background to be able to tackle build system bugs.

In the meantime, I'll have a rummage around in the 0setup script and see if I can spot where it's going awry.

Yes... xorg problems here too with a raedon 9200 pro. Installed Patriot's recent driver ans found no difference. Back to x-vesa :( .

But you are correct tronkel, only a snapshot so really it's only something to play with.. the build system is the testing part as you said.

tronkel 01micko jim1911 , for my hd3850 xorgwizard selected "fbdev" which would not start X. I edited xorg.conf and inserted "radeon" as driver and for some reason X then started but changed radeon to vesa! You could probably start by changing xorg.conf driver directly to vesa I bet. Once I was running in vesa it was hard to look at the 60Hz crt screen of course. I went to Ubuntu Packages (search) and downloaded the "xserver_xorg_radeonhd..." driver as a deb. I clicked to install the deb and I can't remember if I had to manually change the xorg.conf to radeonhd (I think I did), but that makes it run correctly at 75Hz. I am using it now. There were at least three possible xorg drivers, ati, radeon, and radeonhd. In Patriot's drivers for 4.3.1 it is the radeon that works, but in 4.3.2 it is the radeonhd that works for me. GLX is still not working though--Barry has no xorg_full pet prepared and I haven't searched out an equivalent in Ubuntu.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/ --> Ubuntu Packages

On another topic: I have tested the SRWare Iron and Chromium browsers and both work out of the box in 4.32. Puppy now runs the two fastest Linux browsers. I have also tested Seamonkey 2 and it works. Firefox 3.6b2pre, Swiftfox 3.5.3, and Firefox 3.5.3 all run out of the box in 4.76 so I expect them to here also. None of these browsers ran out of the box in Puppy 4.3.1. Forgive me if I sound excited ;-)

Console runs for me, also seamonkey 1.1.18.

I had to add integer.pm and base.pm in order to install and run Crossover, but I have always had to do that. Crossover is running fine so I guess wine will also.

early days :)

Reading the posts here I was aware of the potential graphics problems
and so tested (rather than just running my default preference)

I was able to run at 1280x1024 without editing the graphics text file on my Geforce 7050 using xorg without problem 8)

The first thing I tested was the package manager
Clicking on installing a package puts up errors about files not being available

The new menu is simplifying things by adding another tier and I hope dpup and spup (and others) adopt a standard menu for Puppy 5 8)
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

Puppy has an older xorg, and nvidia driver must be compatible with both the kernel and the installed xorg.

No wonder the 4.3 pets don't work with upup ...

Thanks Playdayz!

That got the Radeon card going OK
The other problems, no internet and no console were due to a very knackered live cd that I burned. I should really post a photo of it - very ugly!

So upup-karmic is now looking very useful.

will try a upup Woof build later today.

Would have helped if you had changed "karmic" to "lenny" in the first tab of the GUI. There is even a pull-down list so you can choose "lenny". After all, if you were able to change the distro choice from "ubuntu" to "debian" then it also follows that you choose an appropriate release of Debian.

Excuse me, ...no, I won't be blunt. "Bite my tongue".

To do a Debian Lenny Upup build will require a lot of setting up.
If you are just looking at Woof casually, don't bother.

The Woof snapshot is setup for building Karmic Koala Upup only. It should also be able to build Ppup 4.3.1.

Couldn't get the Woof GUI to start when making a Dpup build, so I used the scripts directly. Eventually noticed that the version should also have been changed to Lenny in the config file.
./woof_gui: line 13: ./DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS-debian-lenny: No such file or directory
I'm nearly through building a Dpup. I'm missing the latest Rox 2.9 though. Can't seem to find it in the Ibiblio repo though. Is it available anywhere?

No wonder the woof_gui wouldn't start.

Gtkdialog3 seemed to have gone awol in Karmic pup from where I was building the Dpup. I first noticed this when the pet package manager wouldn't start - it also needs gtkdialog3.

So yes, the woof-gui does look interesting. I'll give this a go very soon

I had a similar problem with my NVIDIA Geforce FX5200, and have to agree that xvesa is unacceptable,
things (icons for instance) appeared to look slightly squashed (heightwise).

So i restarted afresh, and made the following choices:

<Xorg > ---→ 1680x1050x24 ---→ < TEST > ---→ < TEST_X_NOW >
< Tweak > ---→ <Edit_xorg.conf> ---→ < OK >
Changed this:

Code: Select all

Driver "nouveau" #card0driver
to this:

Code: Select all

Driver "nv" #card0driver
Then did Ctrl+s (to Save) and Ctrl+q (to Quit)
< TEST_X_NOW > Up popped the window with the message "Puppy Xorg Video Wizard: testing X etc etc"
Did the Crtl+Alt+Backspace
<FINISHED> ---→ <DONE >

Up came the desktop, looking a lot better than it did previously using xvesa.

Hope this helps

Catdude,

Thanks for the Driver suggestion and the clear explanation of what needed to be done to change the driver. It worked for my NVIDIA Geforce 8400 card also.

Video GLX & DRI

#16 Post by playdayz »

I went back to Ubuntu Packages and downloaded these four files for glx and dri. I installed all 4, though I am not sure about the 3rd one, and hardinfo -> Display shows I am getting gl and, it says, dri. glxinfo shows that also, and glxgears shows a fast frame rate. Even without the mesa-utilities the log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log showed that the glx and dri files had installed properly. (Mesa-utilites has glxinfo and glxgears.)

libgl1-mesa-dri_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-glx_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
libglu1-mesa_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
mesa-utils_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb

http://packages.ubuntu.com/ -> Ubuntu Packages (from Karmic)

FLASHPLAYER - Flashplayer 10.32 was crashing everything, in every browser. I certainly might have done something to cause that, but I do not know what. i reverted to 9.246 which seems to run OK. Does anyone else have the problem? I made a fresh install and the same thing happened--Seamonkey 1.1.18 with flash 10.32 crashed at the adobe test flash player site.

ALSAWIZARD - Alsawizard does not seem to run correctly. I have realtek audio on the motherboard and an audigy pci card and I have previously used alsawizard to select the audigy card, but when I enter #alsawizard in a terminal, I get some kind of message in a rectangular yellow-orange box which goes away too fast to read and then back to the prompt. The onboard audio is working, it's just not the one I want.

1. When trying to set up sound, this is the message:

# alsaconf
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 106: 22170 Terminated yaf-splash -font "8x16" -outline 0 -margin 4 -bg orange -text "Running the 'depmod-FULL' utility, please wait...

WARNING:
The 'depmod-FULL' utility has to be run for ALSA Config to work.
Puppy normally runs the Busybox 'depmod' which uses less resources.
The problem is that 'depmod-FULL' hangs on some systems with very
low RAM (64MB or less) -- such a situation is relieved after you
have created a 'pupave' and a swap file/partition."
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 514: mktemp: command not found
Can't create temp file, exiting...
#
Any ideas on changes needed for the alsaconf file?

EDIT: Corrected above sound problem by replacing /usr/sbin/alsaconf with the alsaconf file from upup476 and copying the /bin/mktemp file from upup476 to the /bin/mktemp in upup432.

2. CUPS didn't work, however, using ppm to install cups-1.3.3 from puppy-4 solved that problem. I didn't try cups_1.4.1 from puppy-5.

3. Puppy universal install did not work for a full hd installation. However, using Pup431's installer I was able to install upup432 as a full hd installation. To make it work, I used the upup 432 frugal installation directory (temporarily renaming upup-432.sfs to pup-431.sfs) which allowed the installation to proceed from this directory.

This is a superb pup. These woof built derivatives are great.
Thanks,
Jim

Karmic Puppy 432 Bugs

#19 Post by Sit Heel Speak »

I just finished a Woof 432 karmic build. Haven't tried the resulting .iso and devx yet.

Here are the errors I saw during the build:

but I was able to edit-in the rox-filer-2.6-something version.

Karmic Puppy 432 Bugs

#20 Post by rameshiyer »

I have installed the Open office through PPM. However, no menu entry. I have tried to run openoffice by locating launch file and made a desktop icon. ( I don't this is proper) Anyhow working!. However, in the case of Firefox, I am not able to start Firefox. When checked the dependency , it says many missing file reported. I don't know how to install this file. If Karmic installed dependency files automatically, it will be very useful to newbies. I also managed to install Google Chrome Browser latest beta Chroome build (deb file separately downloaded from google) in Karmic by converting with separate debian to pet package installer. However, no menu entry and proxy interwork option is not working. However, I feel, Chroom browser is faster in Puppy.
