Barebones 4.21 - no sound and missing /dev/dsp |
|
Hello everyone,
I wonder if you have an idea what might cause a little issue and help me out.
Ok, here it goes: I have an AsRock aLiveDual mainboards with onboard-audio and want to get Puppy Barebones 4.21 working properly on it (it' supposed to be the starting point for K-9 4.21). I already checked the issue with the onboard chipset and know that I need to choose "usb-audio" from the alsawizard in order to get the sound to work.
However, if I try the same trick with barebones, nothing happens. It looks like that for some reason alsawizard deletes /dev/dsp, tries to reconfigure the system, but doesn't create a new dsp node (if it's supposed to do that). IIRC this is the node that is used by alsa, and since a little test with madplay always resulted in the error message "/dev/dsp: no such file or directory" I guessed it must have something to do with that. This problem also occurs with the standard edition of Puppy Linux 4.21.
What probably could be missing in 4.21 (and barebones) and needs to be installed in order to fix this? It used to work with NOP 4.13.

An update to the issue:
I just made a few tests and eventually compared the versions between puppy 4.13 and 4.21.
Looks like the new version of alsa-libs (1.0.19) is either missing some files or even broken. I installed the older dotpet (1.0.16) from NOP 4.13 over a RAM-only barebones - and the sound came back. Someone please check the alsa-libs for errors, or if they threw out some modules.

@WarMock
Sorry, just saw your post. Barebones uses the same alsa as the regular 4.21. The 4.21-alsa is a mixed-up pkg with 1.0.16 and 1.0.19 parts. The issue i know is that the regular and the dev-pet are mixed and that some files are missing. I have created a pet to fix, you may want to try.
but a more secure way would be to use the 1.0.16-alsa packages. These are older, but are known to work (they've been used in puppy for a longer time and are not mixed with different alsa-versions).
you could also test the alsa-packages used in 4.3. they use 1.0.20 i think.

Danke. Erm, thanks (almost forgot that this is not the german part of the forum ).
Yes, alsa-libs 1.0.16 works, I'm using it right now. The only thing I need to figure out now is how to get X to work for restricted accounts again.
