I found this interesting tut for making carbon-fiber like textured wallpaper, it's for photoshop but you can use same method in gimp, here's a quick wallpaper I could've done it better probably:

Nice! That one would need something like fluxbox as it is such a deep wallpaper, I don't know what icons would do well with it, ya know? Good job, dejan....
