Just a query, do I need to add your libcups-gnomeprint.pet or is it included in 214X14?

Thanks as ever
Dave
Hi dave I think I did, its hard to get it straight after so many retakes and releases, I'll toss it in anyways with the next release, if you have the pet locally just install it and see if it makes a difference.
When I click print and look at abiword I have lots of options, So I would say so.

Had I asked, I guess I would have been told that 2.14X14 doesnt play a DVD with gxine. I sorta miss the simplicity of Pfind. Matter of fact, I've always thought Pfind deserved a shortcut on desktop. One of the Gnome people was speaking on TLLTS about preferential use of search apps instead of traditional organization in named folders, as a usability adaptation to finding files (for users too busy or lazy to categorize their files).

what do you mean it doesn't play dvd's, I just tossed in faceoff and it played without issue?
open gxine --> click file --->click dvd
and it should start, then give it time to view the opening commercials and then hit play on the screen with the mouse.

Searchmonkey is just as easy to use as pfind and takes less resources, just delete the vdub_mini example text and type anything in and click start.

Nope, said "xine engine failed to start" when I clicked DVD. Even tried hunting for the player in the dev folder, same error message. Also gave a read error from /dev/dvd. I dont usually play a DVD when Puppy is running as a live CD, with disk removed. Maybe this is part of the problem.

Same error, booting with pfix=ram.

The xine engine failed to start. No input plugin was found. Maybe the file does not exist or cannot be accessed, or there is an error in the URL.

Just speculating, seems like the optical reader is not detected as a DVD player, rather as a simple CDrom.

FWIW, I am now running Puppy 4.3 as live CD and it plays DVD fine, without pfix=ram. I did nothing different.

Full install of 2.14 X 14 completed on my P3 test machine.

I can happily report that usb flash drives are recognized and mount/unmount as expected.

printing

#2011 Post by davesurrey »

Eventually got both my Samsung and HP printers to work locally in 214X14.

I have to say it was a bit traumatic, both needing drivers not part of the standard install and often Cups web-screen failed to start, even by typing

Code: Select all

http://localhost:631
Now trying to get it to recognise the same printers over the LAN. No luck so far.

I noticed that in pup431.1 but not in 214X14, under CUPS>list of devices is a line
windows printer via samba
I am assuming samba is installed in 214X?

Thanks
Dave

I can confirm that I can view a dvd on my full install of 2.14 X 14. No problem.

But, my test PC has hot-swappable notebook optical drives (I usually use the cd-rom) if I swap drives while system is running the dvd is still recognized as a cd-rom .Rebooting correctly shows as dvd.

Anyway, a dvd will play in Gxine.

Olf Bugs, still around.....

#2013 Post by Minnesota »

:( Sorry to report most of my old bugs are still around....some cosmetic if you wish.. but still...

1) zd1211 loading by default... remod and modprobe to get zd1211rw installed but might be able to do that in the wizard.. as zd1211w is in the system modules.

2) Ran printer setup for setup menu... .blows up to Usage for Xdialog... solution on the screen.. used the printer setup from System.

3) Set up printer by name in CUPS... does not show in Abiword, or Gnunumeric.... but both print as default.. previously solved.

4) Blank Puppy Linux ..... window to initialize the printer till CUPS is closed.

5) and oh yes... margin not set in gnumeric, easily seen in print preview, no printer necessary to see this.

:(.....

Sorry to take so long to get to test...14... been installing new laminated floor and office totally disrupted. Just put in last piece.

dave, are you going to put together an updated to-be-fixed list? you may want to add minnesotas issues in it. and the links for my battery meter and wireless updates.

thanks

CD booting

#2015 Post by MinHundHettePerro »

Hello,

much posting while I was hacking away on the CD boot problem this evening, missed it completely, was offline .

Anyway, what I suggested last night: swapping two variables in sbin/init worked for booting, but would still have denied me of using any pup_saves on partitions higher than hda8.

Played around with size of initrd, as clarf posted above. Decided to go with original size (1638400 bytes) and original content, and well it works for me :). (There were only 9 free inodes, so I added another 28 )

If you want to try it out, well, here it is .......

Wow, just got my networked printer working for the very first time ...but in pup430.

Seems 214X14 CUPS doesn't have the option of using "windows printing via samba"
Anyone any ideas how to get it to work? Is it possible in 214X?

I just did a remaster of 214X14 using your initrd.gz above. Unfortunately it didn't seem to work on my test PC (now with 14 partitions in total).

Booting the Live CD I get as far as
copying pup_214R.sfs to tmpfs.......failed
blah blah
mounting /dev/loop0 on /pup_ro2 failed

SQUASFS error: unable to read uid/gid table......
and then good old Kernel panic.

I should stress it's late here (1am) I've a busy next few days away so I may have made a mistake in my remastering although it seemed to go as before.

Sorry I can't do more tonight and will be away next few days.

Dave

Did you test the bigger initrd.gz that I released before?. Does it work fine with all your partitions?.

MHHP

Good to know you can give me a hand editing the initrd.gz. Forgive me I didn´t tried your swap variable in init yet, should check that soon.

In a side note, I didn´t notice the few free inodes. Is it possible to add more inodes without creating a new FS for initd? (although resizing the initrd add more block devices and inodes, I want know if that quick modification is possible).

Thank you,

clarf

I finally got around to testing Gparted on 2.14 X 14. My test machine already has all of the partitions made and I generally use the actual Gparted disc but I thought I'd give it a test.

I had a pc with Windows installed and a block of unallocated space. Made an Ext3 partition for Puppy and a swap , no problems. Installed 2.14 X 14 (full install) and posting from it now.

initrd

#2020 Post by MinHundHettePerro »

Hi :)

clarf, maybe you can make something out of these notes by this happy, mindless tinkerer :).

I sort of just stumbled upon the inodes; made a slightly larger fs and trying to copy all the files from initrd into this larger fs failed. df -i showed 328 total inodes, 9 free inodes for original 214X12 initrd, while there were only 216 inodes available in the larger fs.
So, I played with the inodes:
Ungzipped initrd from 214X12, mounted it at a mountpoint, t, with

Code: Select all

mount -t ext2 ./initrd /t
Then made another filesystem, initrd_2

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=./initrd_2 bs=1k count=1600
, made an ext2 fs with 28 extra inodes[mkfs.ext2 -N 356 ./initrd_2[/code]and mounted it at a mountpoint, tt,

Code: Select all

mount -t ext2 ./initrd_2 /tt
Then I just copied the contents of initrd to initrd_2, unmounted and gzipped the new initrd and used Isomaster CD to include it in the iso.

If it's the proper way or not, I dunno, it worked for me, but failed for Dave as of his post above. :?: :?
Reading up a bit on fs's, I see that there's more to the pic than what just met my eye, reserved blocks and such. :? :)
