You can also use the Download Helper plugin in Firefox.

I've just installed the downloadhelper extension but its having problems with the video convert afterwards. Its seems not to be able to complete the convert due to lack of codecs. I think this is something to with the ffmpeg side of things.

Can anyone help me sort this out?

Many thanks, Dave

I tried you2pup and love the idea, same idea as downloadhelper. Unfortunately it didn't work for me so I'm back to trying downloadhelper. Any ideas on how to get the ffmpeg thing sorted?

Here's another method (from this post:)
I am downloading videos from youtube as mp4 files. you can do this by putting the word pwn in front of your youtube url (e.g. www.pwnyoutube.com/video_address_here
I haven't tried it.

Hi, many thanks for the help. I've found a few ways of downloading the videos thanks, what I'm really after is sorting out the post conversion to different filetypes, in particular mp3. This seems to be where my ffmpeg has problems.

one of the download options in you2pup in the image above is mp3. had assumed that you just say that is what you want when you start the download

Hi, yes, I'd seen that but as I'd said in my previous post you2pup doesnt work for me. It hangs at the start with "Finding hostname" followed by a time out message, even though I've made sure I've typed in the correct url as in the example.

Seem like the gods are against me getting mp3s out of youtube.

Cheers, dave

give the exact links/songs that you are trying to get and i'll try and get it.
also take a screenshot of your download gui just before you hit the button and also a screenshot of the hang output.
"typed in the url": use copy and paste.
have just done a download. it comes down into mp4 then hit convert when it is downloaded and it converts to mp3,

I think Plinej's Pawdioconverter can convert mp4 to mp3. (If m4a is the same as mp4.) Anyway, it's free to try. :)

Hi,
to get a mp3 sound recording of a youtube video:
this also looks awesome and much faster than recording the audio card output (needs audacity or equivalent, as also waiting till the end of the recording... :? ):
youtube to mp3 on line
http://www.youtube-mp3.org
just copy the desired url and get the mp3 file within a few minutes... :D
cheers

There's also JDownloader. It's an overgrown download manager, but it can also download videos from YouTube. Flashgot integration is also available for the Mozilla browsers, too.

Give it a YouTube video URL, and it'll let you download video- multiple formats and resolutions if available- and usually there's an MP3 option, too.

I haven't made a thread for it, but I do have a package for that download manager detailed on my little cobbled website.
