printing |
|
EDIT:
Completely re-edited to make it clearer (hopefully).
Okay so now that I know that Setup>Printer Wizard is to be avoided and to use System>CUPS manage printing instead. Very counter-intuitive. I managed to go through ttuxxx's directions....thanks but still couldn't get my 2 printers to work so went to pup431.1
In Pup431.1 I couldn't find a pre-installed driver for my Samsung ML2010R laser so searched and found one and put in /usr/share/cups/model. Installed and set as default. It worked ie appeared in Abiword>File>Print and printed ok.
Then tried with my HP OfficeJet 6210. No driver for it so found hpliplite-3.9.8-mu-p4.pet and hpijs-2.8.2_static-1.pet. Wasn't sure which to use so installed the latter. Then used cups and it installed and printed ok, appearing as an option in Abiword>File>Print.
Now tried in 214X9.1
Samsung ML2010R: used driver as above and printed okay.
HP couldn't find a hppijs.pet in pet-get so haven't got it working.
But...
Note that in Abiword>File>Print the printers are identified in 431.1 but not in 214X9.1
I have also noticed that in 214X9.1 when I do a "System>CUPS manage printing>Click to install new Printer" the "Puppy Linux Printer Manager" window stays up (as blank) when the web-like CUPs screen starts. Once everything is set up the "Printer Linux Printer Manager screen stays up and sometimes needs killing. This doesn't happen in 431.1 Is a process not completing? Is this the reason the printers are not seen in abiword correctly?
Help

ok I figured out what wasn't working It was a few drivers I had to compile and test and now look below on the options on abiword, using my directions I posted earlier, Just install the package and then reinstall your printer. Thanks

ttuuxxx,
Installed your pet and it works great now. Congratulations and thanks.
Specifically, both printers now work, they appear in Abiword>File>Print and the Puppy Linux Printer Manager instability seems to have gone.
So now I tried the (even) harder bit and tried to get my test PC which is connected to the printers over the network to work. And it did without any intervention at all. Great.
I did have to install the HP drivers (see previous post) which was a bit surprising as I thought my HP Officejet was quite common and there is a trivial issue where each printer selection appears many time ( see attached) but fundamentally it's working fine.
I have a suggestion however.
The Puppy Linux Printer Manager says: | Quote: |
Once your finished installing the printer..... delete ..extra drivers.. |
If I understand this correctly then I think a novice might do this and not realise they are deleting drivers which they may need in the future. This isn't what happens with the network drivers for example.
And by the way it should be "Once you're finished..."
Cheers and thanks once again.

Naaa its ok to delete them once the driver is installed, Gutenprint has them compressed and when you start the install wizard, it decompress all the drivers into a folder, really that folder should be /tmp but its not built that way. Anyways once the driver is selected its copied to another location, then you have 19MB extra drivers sitting around and they all will be recreated once again when you run the new printer setup. SO deleting anytime after the printer is installed won't harm a thing

90% pet fix |
|
90% pet fix... printer now shows in abiword and gnumeric, printer prints.
part: As long as cups set up, is still active the Puppy Linux Printer Manager remains a blank box.
2) As per earlier versions of x9... if you put a single letter in the first A column of the spread sheet.. such as
a
a
b
b
b
THIS WILL NOT print.. as the left margin is not defaulted correctly. TTUUXXX you fixed this in a later version... you can see it happening if you select print preview.
And I have to remind you about ZD1211rw for the next version.
Trust the cold is a history issue? Keep well... get some rest...

ttuuxxx,
Ok. Well I did say | Quote: | | If I understand this correctly |
But in that case perhaps the wording should clarify that. I may not be the only person not to understand it??
Minnesota:
I get the same blank box also but at least printing is working now.

Hi Guys found something today I didn't think I would, lol and nooooo its not my brain, lol
Anyways a complete replacement for Galculator and then some
This calculator should be about 4 times the size, its suppose to use a lot of needed Gnome files, but I messed around with the sources and managed to get it working without any extra deps, which is excellent, keeps the size really small, well a bit bigger than Galculator but not much.
I have it set as a basic calculator, but then click the view button.
-basic
-advanced
-Financial
-scientific
-Programming
enjoy

Nice one ttuuxxx,
It could be the final solution for the question. How to throw out 3 (or more) unnecessary calculators choices in all Puppy series?. (And get more space at same time).

Keyboard Layout |
|
Greetings!
After an unusually hard week, workwise, I finally had some time so look into the keyboard setter issue.
I made some patch & stitch work, so as to utilise the working parts and hide the non-working parts .
Since I found that button 2 in the keyb. setter worked in xvesa (after a restartwm command) I replaced the non-working button 1, and button 2 with one that chooses the script from former button 2 or button 3, depending on if xorg or xvesa is running. If xorg is running, the chosen keymap code is also written to /etc/keymap, so it will be reported on the boot-screen.
Also, before, I had to (using xorg) apply the changes an extra time before it was activated - Now fixed.
I've tested with the attached files squashed into pup_214R.sfs, and it seems to work.
N.b. If changing between xorg and xvesa the keyboard layout might have to be set again (list of layouts in xorg is much longer than in xvesa, also gb-uk discrepancy).
Hopefully, a few rough edges off of 214X . ...maybe...
Try it out /
