Why can't I "click on links" in Thunderbird email?

#1 Post by cheepgeek »

This maybe a stupid question, but how do I enable Thunderbird to allow me to click on links in email? I've checked out all the preference options and can't seem to fix this. Thanks :?

I think I've seen that subject addressed before in the forum. Try searching the Howto category. What happens when you do click on a link?

Absolutely nothing. When I was using Ubuntu, a new window would open with the url displayed in the address bar.

How did you install Thunderbird, dotpup, pupget or downloaded from Mozilla.org?

Downloaded from Mozilla and installed as an alien package. It works fine and setup went perfect. The only problem is I can't click on internal links to got to a website.

i think you can edit a config file, maybe
/root/.thunderbird/[something].default/prefs.js

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser");

GuestToo, you rock! I was having the same problems with thunderbird, and sure enough, I added those entries into the prefs.js file, a it worked. I searched all over the mozilla site, but leave it to the puppy forum to have the answer.

I am having the same problem as cheepgeek, and the fix suggested by GuestToo doesn't work for me.

Any further suggestions?

P.S.: Beg your pardon! It does work. Here's my contribution to the solution: RESTART THE COMPUTER.

Jakob- you mean it did and now doesn't? Was there a one time pop-up asking what to do? TB via pet or official?

Yes, it did, and now it doesn't. I think this happened once or twice before, for no reason I could fathom. There was no pop-up asking what to do. I believe this was a tarball download, if I remember correctly. The settings mentioned earlier in this threead are still as mentioned there - both in TB itself and in the prefs.js file.

Thanks, semme.

Dragging the link from TB to FF seems to work. That is essentially the same as 'copy & paste. But it still falls short of clicking.

The research continues.

Anyone know what command line would be the same as clicking?

Jake, guessing your browser's default- try the second part here under "launch application window" or this take (ref)..

OK, thanks semme. Here's what I did (following the second of your suggested links):
- Open TB
- Click 'Edit'
- Click 'Preferences'
- Click 'Attachments' tab
- You will see 'Content Type' listed (mine shows 'http' and 'https')
- Under 'Action' select 'Use Other'
- Locate firefox directory (~/usr/lib/Firefox3.6.x) and open it
- Double click the 'firefox' icon. (it will be called 'firefox' without anything else in the file name)
- Repeat for both 'Content Types'
- 'Action' should now read 'Use firefox'
- Close. You're all set.
This seems to work now. Will have to see what happens after reboot.

In any case, appreciate your assistance. This may help some others, too.

Jake

P.S. Yep, still works after reboot.

Picked up another little ap as well: ThunderBrowse: You can launch the web page you were clicking for right in TB, without launching FF. I might find that handy.

:-))

As you're not the thread starter, you can't. Besides, there's plenty here for others experiencing the same..
